There are certain areas of a person's life that should be kept private. One of those is the internet. The people of America should be able to keep their internet use to themselves. The government should not regulate citizens internet use because it takes away peoples freedom of speech, it would cost the government more money, and it is an invasion of citizens privacy. The government regulates many situations in citizens life and this should not be one of them. The first reason the American government should not regulate the internet is because of cost. The government would to spend money on the equipment to regulate the internet. This Amendment gives the citizens freedom of speech, by regulating the government this would threaten it. According to James Gattuso "that any individual with a visible presence in cyberspace is a "public figure" with the ability to publicly challenge any defamatory information" (6). This meaning that if someone is on the internet they should be able to speak their mind. Also citizens should not have to worry about the government watching everything that they say on the internet. The controversy lies in the fact that children are accessing these materials also. Government, activist groups, and concerned parents are fighting to regulate obscene material found over the Internet to protect children. Things have changed drastically since then with over a million different sites available to access porn. Now it is not just for adults. Children are accessing the obscene materials. The First Amendment states ( U.S Constitution ,1787) "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise there of, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." So in other words, the government is not allowed to deny us our freedom of speech and religion. I agree with the First Amendment. The government should not be allowed to control what we have to say. It would be like them controlling our thoughts. The government would then be able to control everything and that would be dangerous. The government should only have the duty to monitor the internet for 2 reasons. First, to monitor for sales of illegal items as well as illegal websites. The second is for crime prediction on social media and to prevent illegal activities. They should monitor for the first, because they need to be able to shut down the illegal black market websites selling illegal weapons or drugs. There are many of these websites in the deep web and we need to try to shut down as many as we possibly can.
