The literary elements tone, voice and characterization help develop the theme that growing up is not easy and that it can be painful. Jem loses his innocence; there will be no one to take care of him when he grows up, so he needs to learn how to take care of himself in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.

These elements highlight the conflict of Man vs. Self in to Kill A Mockingbird; repeatedly, Jem is struggling with the choice between being responsible for the children or saving himself. An example of this is when the children decide to go to the Radley property to see what Boo was doing. After the gunshot shattered the neighbor, Jem, Scout and Dill, went by Miss Maudie to pretend that they had no idea what was going on. Jem asked asked “What happened?” Miss. Maudie replied back with “Mr. Radley shot at a Negro in his collard patch” and then Miss Stephanie said Mr.Radley “Says if anybody sees a white nigger around, that’s the one. Says he’s got the other barrel waitin” (61) This part of the book shows man vs society, the society shows that they have something against people of color and that they don’t want anything to do with them. After all that commotion Jem, Scout and Dill casually walked to the front of the yard acting like they didn't know what was going on. They looked down the street and saw a circle in the front of the Radley house. Atticus noticed that Jem’s pants were gone so he asked Jem “Where's your pants” Dill then said that he has won em’ from him while playing strip poker by a fishpool out in the back. Atticus saved Dill from Miss. Maudie after she heard that they were playing strip poker her the backyard, Dill was saving Jem from him getting whipped from Atticus, if he had ever found out about what they have done. While walking up the street Jem said ”Don’t worry Dill, she ain’t gonna get you. He’ll talk her out of it” this shows that Jem cares about Dill and doesn't want him to
