Gothic Elements and how they are Reflected in To Kill a Mockingbird During the early stages of To Kill a Mockingbird we get an initial sense of inequality. The general consensus in Maycomb is that there are a few classes, among the white people but all people who are not are instantly labeled as trash by the small counties white population. Maybe its because the majority is scared of the different or scared to disobey the standard of oppression that they created. Their worldview changes and they start to expand their mindset. Scout realizes that she's different, she doesn't hate because of superficial things or because of unsubstantial fear, she hates those who hate but at the same time is surrounded by them. Scout realizes that she is not alone when it comes to ideals, she finds solace in people that she loves like Ms. Maudie, Atticus, Jem, Calpurnia and Heck Tate. Scout, Jem and Dill find themselves in the middle of the town being passed back and forth being told what to listen to and what to ignore. Paragraph 2 Quote: "Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don't pretend to understand." chapter 9 Point: After the children have made their decisions about how they want to be and what morals they want to live by, they are greeted with the news that Tom has been shot, trying to escape prison. This leaves the kids in shock as they believed Tom, wholeheartedly and when he was convicted their hearts broke because as children looking up to the courts and their neighbors they expect them to be fair and good but when Tom was convicted they knew that was not fair and good.
