COMING TO REALIZE The key coming of age scene “ TO KILL A MOKING BIRD’’ is where Jem and the two others were up above in the jury watching their father ( Atticus ) try and win a case were an African American person is trying to be blamed guilty for doing something he did not do. This scene has the following literary elements, p.o.v , or point of view, coming of age and also characteristic and respect. The first literary element in this scene is point of view. This was included in this scene by Atticus trying to fight for the Native American person that has done nothing wrong. His point of view or perspective is that people always blame African American just so that the African Americans can be blamed and they’re mistakes is covered up without
anybody knowing but themselves. And Atticus knew about this but he’s still trying to win the case based off of his beliefs of what actually happened. The second literary element included in this scene is coming of age. The way that this was included in this scene is by Jem. Jem realizes that life isn’t fair ounce the father loses the case. And that Jem and his father know they should have one the case. So in that scene Jem realizes how life wasn’t fair and learning the right from wrong. The last literary element included in this scene is characteristic. In meaning like how the people act what they are feeling how to react to situations. For example when Tom Robinson was called up to the chair to answer the questions that everyone had. That’s when the actual real situation that took place in that conflict. And that’s when you can see Tom Robinsons face grew very serious and very hard to say the truth about what actually happened between him and Mayella. Also another thing that happened is that when the case was dismissed then every African American person stood up and waited for Atticus to leave the court room. That was an act of respect for Atticus because Atticus was the only person that was words for the African Americans. So in conclusion the scene that impacted me the most with literary elements is the courtroom scene were Atticus loses the case and jam learns a valuable lesson that life isn’t fair and you would have to accept that life is just that way.
Atticus criticizes, “...-the evil assumption-that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negroes are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption that one associates with minds of their calibre.” Atticus denounces all those that associate evilness with being a Negro. Atticus is proving that a majority of the people in the courtroom associate Negroes with lies or cruel deeds, and they are under an evil assumption. Atticus evokes this feeling from the jury in order to demonstrate that anyone can lie, be immortal, or untrustworthy, not just Negroes. Scout and Jems father Atticus, is taking a case that affects their lives in so many ways. They all learn new things throughout the story and it impacts their lives greatly. There are lots of things including the trial mostly that change the perspective of the world they live in. The kids are living in the Great Depression and it shows just how bad things really where. Everyone goes through different changes as they grow up. Maturing, coming of age, and doing the right thing are important themes in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. This theme is most often seen in the character Jeremy “Jem” Finch. He portrays this theme when he begins to enter puberty and becomes a young man. Jeremy starts to become more independent, wiser and more able to comprehend adult situations; Jem begins to get a better grasp on things. Other characters that demonstrate this theme are Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, and Arthur “Boo” Radley. Harper Lee shows how Scout comes of age in similar ways to Jem. Scout begins to grow up and become more tolerant of others by “putting herself in another person’s skin”. Boo displays his “coming of age” in a somewhat different way than Jem and Scout. There’s a scene in To Kill A Mockingbird where Boo has the chance to do the right thing by putting himself in harm’s way in order to save lives, and he takes the chance. Friends and neighbors object when Atticus puts up a strong and spirited defense on behalf of the accused black man. Atticus renounces violence but stands up for what he believes in. He decides to defend Tom Robinson because if he did not, he would not only lose the respect of his children and the townspeople, but himself as well.

For this assignment, I decided to do my film review on To Kill a Mockingbird (Mulligan, R., & Pakula, A. (Directors). (1962). To Kill a Mockingbird[Motion picture on VHS]. United States of America.) I have a personal connection to this film because it is one of my most beloved novels by Harper Lee. I have never watched the film so it was a nice experience to see the characters I have loved for years come to life just before my eyes. The film particularly focuses on a white family living in the South of the United States in the 1930s. The two siblings, Jem and Scout Finch, undergo major changes while experiencing evil and injustice in their small town of Maycomb. Jem and Scout’s father is named Atticus and he is a well-respected man in the town as well as being a lawyer.
