The title the film I chose to critique is To Kill A Mockingbird. To Kill A Mockingbird is a courtroom drama about a black man who was accused of raping a white women. To Kill A Mockingbird was released in 1962. This was a blockbuster film and This movie is told the point of view of a six year old daughter of the lawyer of the black man, her name is Scout. This movie has amazing Aesthetic choices, an amazing cultural impact, and personal impact in my life. This film is directed by Robert Mulligan. Robert Mulligan as the director, he was in charge of visualizing the script and bringing the script to life, he was in charge of all of the scenes but mostly of guiding the actors and other people in setting up the scenes including the props in …show more content…
the actual scene. The cinematographer of this movie was Russell Harlan. Russell Harlan was in charge of how to film plays out on camera. So while the director was in charge of guiding the actual people and props in the scenes, Russell Harlan was in charge of the camera movement and how things were captured on the camera.
A great example of this would be the mob scene, the director was in charge of creating the atmosphere of the mob, the people standing, the props they were holding, the way they were the surrounding Atticus and the cell all of that, but the cinematographer was in charge of of how the camera portrayed the mob scene, cutting from the children to the mob, blending it all together, putting the focus on the one man when he was speaking in the mob. It was the cinematographer's job to bring the story to life, he brings the director's vision to life. Major actors in the movie include, Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, Mary Badham as Scout Finch, and Phillip Alford as Jem Finch All of these actor brought something unique to the creative side of the movie, to Kill A Mockingbird. Gregory Peck brought a sense of maturity to the role of to kill a mockingbird. This was seen all throughout the movie. Mary Badham brought a sense of …show more content…
innocence to Scout. And while Scout was portrayed as innocent in the book, the innocent really shines with Mary Badham portraying Scout. Phillip Alford as Jem Finch portrayed a sense of developing maturity. All throughout the movie, he is seen guiding Scout, and sort of making decisions someone moving into maturity would do. Their overall role in the design process was just to bring a certain trait to the characters in the movie, which these three did successfully. This film was about a black man named Tom Robinson, being accused of rapig a white women. Atticus Finch decides to represent this man even though all of the town is against it, seeing as this is set in the 1930’s and racial tensions were at an all time high. Thiss troy is actually told through the eyes of Atticus Finch’s daughter Scout Finch, who learns about prejedice ins coity, and why it is ultimatley all rubbish. The difference between To Kill A Mockingbird’s story and plot is that To Kill A Mockingbird’s story is about A young girl named Scout Finch who learns about prejeudice in her sccoiety, she learens about it thogh he fater taking on the case of Tom Robinson, the black guy who was accused of raping a white women, adn she also learns about it through her neigbor Boo Radley, who never comes out, she thinks that she Boo Radley is evil until one night he saves her life and then she thinks maybe he is not all that bad, so at the end of the day, she earns not have nor encourge prejeduce. The Plot is simply of a young girl learning about prejudice through the daily activities of her life. The plot is much more breif than the story. The Aesthetic Choices in To Kill A Mockingbird are very interesting. The lighting of this movie is incredible, seeing as this is a black and white movie, in the movie the lighting was a very nice mixture of light and dark. When the lighting was bright like the courtroom scene, it was a high key light and low key light setting as well, like the children spying on Boo Radley, that was a low key light setting. This helped contribute to both the narrative and the theme of the movie because it the lighting told us what emotion was to be portrayed. It helped with the narrative because it really helped to tell the story and once again provide insight to the emotions of the particular scene. Another choice would be props. The props in the scene, it really help the atmosphere for the scenes. In the movie, and example I would like to state would be the scene of the mob. The jail cell was conveniently placed behind Atticus Finch, to show that he was protecting Tom. the way the prop of the jail cell was placed was crucial, because it would not have made any sense to have Atticus on the side of the jail cell, that really would have portrayed Atticus as not really protecting Tom from the Mob. This helps provide insight to the narrative and the theme because the theme could be shown all throughout the movie, especially in the court with the Blacks sitting in one section and whites sitting in the other, where the props were placed showed racial tension, this relates to the theme as well, the props really help determine the theme. Editing really helped portray the narrative and the theme. Angles are really important because they can help portray only certain things that the narrative and the theme can capitalize on. For example, when the kids were spying on Boo Radley a shadow was shown from a certain angle. If it was from any other angle, the shadow have not been seen and a significant part of the movie would have been missed if the movie was shot from any other angle. When it comes to technology, To Kill A Mockingbird does not really use any technology such as special effects. It is a really old fashioned movie, and the fact that it is a old fashioned movie really sticks to the theme of racial prejudice because of the time frame, and learning and Scout’s journey. This overall had an amazing impact culturally, it shows American just how race has an impact in American culture and influences every single decision, mainly decisions in justice, in America during the times of Jim Crow. Many African Americans, like in this book, have been falsely accused, Troy Davis, being an example. Troy Davis was accused of aggravated murder, and he was sentenced to death. Well, despite the fact that seven of the nine witnesses retracted their statements. Well despite the overwhelming evidence that Tom Robinson was innocent, he was found guilty based on race, the same as what many people think of the Troy Davis case. They both relate to each other because race was a major influence in both sections made when in came to innocent or guilty. The things in society that led to the film being produced was the struggle of civil rights for African Americans. Everything can be gained from analyzing his film, insight into how America’s south operated at the time of Jim Crow, how race influenced everything in society including something that should be offered to all Americans, freedom.
This movie changed the way I viewed movies because it was a fantastic movie, that showed racial tension. So whenever I watch movies, I look for things like racism, classism, and sexism, this movie has helped me find these things in movies. I can use film theory and criticism to find and interpret meaning in movies because with criticism the movie is not being evaluated based off the critic's opinion of the movie, instead it is being evaluated based on the content, and when someone evaluates the content they have to provide explanation of why exactly the movie is great or not. One of the main ways of determining if a movie good or not is the overall message of the movie, or the meaning of the movie. Film Theory can be used to can interpret meaning in movies because it provides framework for understanding film and how it relates to the other arts and life, so I can analyze the framework and connect it back to all arts and life, to find a meaning. This course has changed my understanding of how movies are related to society because I have learned that almost everything is based of the film theory, which is connecting film back to the arts and real life, both of these have a major influence on film. I have learned some very important skills such as
being aware of my surroundings, when I am going somewhere or filming something, I need to be aware of my surroundings. To conclude, To Kill A Mockingbird is an amazing movie, This movie has amazing Aesthetic choices, an amazing cultural impact, and personal impact in my life. The aesthetic choices made such as the lighting and the editing, really provide great insight into the emotions of the movie. The cultrural impact of To Kill A Mockingbird is amazing as well, it shows how race affets wvery aspect of American society escpecaail the AMerican justice system. This movie has an amazing impact on my pesonal life because it made me reevalue everything in scoiety as well as in my life, this movie also helps me pay close attention to detail, which is very important.
“I’d rather you shoot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after the birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mocking bird.” Atticus Finch recites these lines to his two children, Jem and Scout after he gives them air-rifles for Christmas. Scout is curious, as this is the first time that she has ever heard her father refer to anything as a sin, Scout asks Miss Maude what Atticus meant by this. Miss Maude tells Scout that mocking birds don’t rip up people’s garden’s or annoy them in any way, all they do is play beautiful music for us to listen to.
The movie Crash educates the viewers on the effects of racism, and the negativity it places in our society. The interpersonal communication that was played out throughout the movie, made me more conscientiously aware, of how I interact with different ethnicities, so as not to offend
Irony is the opposite of what is and what seems to be. Harper Lee uses irony in
In 1962, Robert Mulligan directed a movie based on Harper Lee’s best-selling novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The film served the audience productively with an outstanding storyline. The movie faced a certain limitation, for of depicting themes from the text. Meanwhile, the novel is more expanded with no sense of limitation. The Ewell’s position hierarchy was not portrayed in the film. Instead, it was heavily implied in the text. Both film and the novel had portrayed Maycomb’s discrimination towards Atticus and his children. Regardless of these adjustments, the film effectively portrayed the main plot of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Twelve Angry men by Reginald Rose and The Scottsboro Trial are all about unfair trials containing discrimination towards different people and people being prejudice .The peoples action towards the defendants affected them for the rest of their life. Many of the people that came into the court brought in their own social problems and that influenced the verdict.
The story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is set in 1932 in the middle of the Great Depression in a deep southern town called Maycomb, Alabama. In this time African Americans were segregated and looked down upon in America and especially in southern states like Alabama. In FDR’s 1932 inaugural address he stated that “We have nothing to fear but ourselves”. He said this because in a time of economical depression there was no hope. With no hope in a society things can start to fall apart and people go crazy. Harper Lee cleverly illustrates this.
When deciding what movie to do for this particular paper I faced a few issues. I knew what the requirements were, but I wanted something different and something I could have fun watching and writing as well. So, after looking around and pondering movies for weeks I finally decided on a perfect choice The 60’s directed by Mark Piznarski?
In the widely known novel To Kill A Mockingbird there are two families that are very diverse and are text book examples of complete opposites on the moral ladder of success. The Cunninghams and the Ewells have two very distinct and opposite reputations. The Cunninghams which are very respected while the Ewells very much despised. The Ewells are given the privilege to hunt out of season, so that the residents of the small town of Maycomb would not have to tolerate their continuous begging twenty-four hours a day for seven days a week. These two families show the respectability of hard workers or, in the Ewells case, can fill their peers with sorrow.
When one would think of the two books Animal Farm, and To Kill a Mockingbird they would think there would not be many similarities, but there actually are. The way there are similarities is because of the themes in the books, loss of innocence. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout and Jem are the ones who really experience loss of innocence.

The film presents scientific and biological evidence that people of different races are not genetically distinct from each other; the comparison of DNA sequences was able to clearly show that this idea of races being biologically different from each other is false. This was able to show that the belief of distinct differences between races is the effect society has had on us, because of the inequality and social injustice present. This shift will be difficult, because people are so used to seeing people being treated differently due to their race and have been exposed to people of different races being represented

This is evident through the production process that is characterized by four phases which include scriptwriting and funding, preparation for filming, shooting, and conclusively the assembly phase. Furthermore, these phases are not mutually exclusive as overlapping may occur. For instance, a filmmaker may have difficulty obtaining funding for the film, however will continue shooting and/or assembling the film. Furthermore, these individual stages modify preceding stages, which occurs when the presentation of the script’s action is drastically altered during the shooting stage, and include an array of particular jobs, from director and producer to main cast to crew
The director is trying for the scene to come out the way that he particularly wants it to look. It is different from directing a play because since a film isn't live, there is a little more freedom and not such a time crunch while directing. However at the same because there is acting involved in both.
