Timothy of the Cay Timothy of the Cay, by Theodore Taylor, is a book containing two stories. One of the stories is about a 12-year-old blind boy named Phillip. His story is about making the decision to receive brain surgery for his eyes, so he can return to the cay to see Timothy’s grave. The second story is about an elderly black man named Timothy who wanted to become the captain of his own ship. In order to earn money, he must dig the Panama Canal and work as a deckhand on a ship. When Timothy worked on his last ship, the Hato, it was torpedoed and he found a raft. Timothy saw Phillip floating in the water. Mama Geeches was tormenting Timothy because he feared the “jumbis.” This is because it was like a ghost or specter in their culture. Hannah Gumbs didn’t give Mama Geeches two kroner. She was smart enough not to believe in that superstition, even though everyone else in St. Thomas did. Hannah Gumbs is the name of the ship that is shown on the poster. Timothy had no parents so Hannah Gumbs acted as his mother or guardian in the story, therefore the name of the ship. It's crucial because Timothy dreamed of being a captain when he was a little kid. He put forth an enormous amount of effort to achieve his goal of becoming a captain. After earning money, Timothy was then able to afford the ship and retired after ten years. Hannah used every penny she had and bought Timothy the shoes. Timothy loved these shoes, even though they were too small and hurt his feet. One morning while going to work, Timothy intended to board the ship with his shoes, but it departed without him. A white person replaced Timothy's position on the Amager. This experience taught Timothy that even though he works really hard, the white person will always have more privileges. The first image on Phillip's side of the poster shows a surgical room, because in the book Phillip must decide to have surgery to treat his blindness. Since this is the main problem, this is important. This is also because there was a significant risk, such as brain damage, seizures or death, that he might not recover from. After the surgery, he might not function well or need glasses. Although Phillip decided to proceed with the surgery, it was a significant decision.
