War causes soldiers to incur huge amounts of trauma and PTSD. The test The Things They Carried By Time O’Brien explores the experiences of the soldiers during the Vietnam War. By looking at The Things They Carried, it is clear how O’Brien relates the trauma and experiences of the characters, literally and metaphorically, to the things they carry, as shown through symbolism and dialogue. This is important because after the war, the trauma the soldiers carry is unimaginable, so we should learn about the soldiers’ experiences. The title is significant in emphasizing how the soldiers feel because of the recurring motif of what the soldiers carry. The author uses these metaphorical symbols to invoke emotions in the audience to tell the stories of the soldiers better, as their emotions are not simple. Additionally, O’Brien highlights the uncomfortable situation the soldiers are in through the sentence “the things they carried were largely determined by necessity”. Saying the things the soldiers carried were largely determined by necessity underscores how the soldiers would mainly carry the things related to war. Being a soldier means you have to face death on the battlefield and you have to carry the grief of all the lost. If the soldiers had little means to escape their reality, it would seem prevalent that only having things related to war would only increase their stress and anxiety, leading to their uncomfortable situation.
