The Things They Carried Analysis It’s amazing how a simple story can evoke memories and feelings from within someone that they never thought was possible again. These stories can take someone back to a happy place- if they are lucky, or it can bring someone back to a place they try to forget. Imagine being brought back to a memory that was so life changing you start to feel the emotions all over again. Tim O’Brien faces all of these memories daily as he recalls his war experiences. Some happy, some sad, some disturbing and some so mentally exhausting that he finds himself reliving these experiences in his mind. “The war wasn’t all terror and violence. Death tolls sound in war and families can lose their loved ones. In the chapter Speaking of Courage, Kiowa’s death is heartbreaking. Bowker and Kiowa were stationed in a human waste field that they thought was a normal field of mud. Suddenly heavy thunder, rain and mortar fire came upon them. The shells made huge craters in the field and years of human waste surfaced. The waste acted like ‘quick sand’ and Kiowa was pulled under the muck. Bowker tried his best to save Kiowa by hanging on to his boot and pulling. However, the smell was so overpowering that Bowker had to let go and Kiowa sunk under the quick moving waste and floated away. “It was a sad scene when the chopper came to take us away” (32). The men had employed the help of an old poppa-san to help guide them through the minefields. There were so many mines that if it wasn’t for the old man’s help, they probably would have stepped on one and blown up. The two boys relied and the old poppa-san to save their lives. For five days, the old man led the soldiers on a game of ‘follow the leader’ through the fields which allowed them to safely return to a base. The sad stories of war consist of losing friends, family, and brothers. Soldiers have to face these feelings and often put them on the back burner.
