I am writing to enlighten you on how your novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, is truly a piece of literature that can be applied to the lives of many, still to this day. In 2012, CBC’s The Fifth Estate released a documentary, “The House of Shafia”, taking a deeper look into the household of the Shafia family, in which four girls were murdered. Mohammed Shafia married Rona Mohammed, who was unable to have children. As a result of this unfortunate case, he took it upon himself to marry another woman, Tooba Yahya, as it is allowed in Afghanistan. Tooba gave birth to seven children, the entire family then moving to Canada in 2007. The family presented Rona as an aunt, rather than a wife, and was granted access into the country. Due to the shame that would be brought upon their family if they did not have children, the two men take it upon themselves to welcome another woman into their lives, then valuing these second wives more than their initial partner. In Rona’s case, Mohammed intentionally married Tooba for the sole reason that she could not provide a family for her husband. Tooba, the second wife, realizes this power that she holds over her, declaring to Rona that she is her slave and servant. In Mariam’s situation, Rasheed primarily marries Laila as he believes his reputation will be shattered if others found out she was living there unmarried. He then, later, recognizes that Laila is able to do what Mariam cannot, start his family. Additionally, Rasheed is the one to tell Laila that Mariam will provide and do all of her hard labor. In both situations, both ladies are disowned by their husbands because of the shame the men believe they are bringing to their name. They cannot bear a child, and thus in their minds, are useless to them. Mohammed and Rasheed both harass their first wives because of this uncontrollable fault they have. Rona and Mariam brought dishonor to their name, and as a result of this, these women’s rights and freedoms were no longer
