Thomas Bayes was born in a prominent Nonconformist family in Sheffield that located around the north of England. Before Thomas was born, his family already famous in the cutlery industry. Richard Bayes (1596–1677), the great-grandfather of Thomas Bayes, was a good and successful cutler in town. In 1643, Richard Bayes was in the position of serving the Master of the Company of Cutlers of Hallamshire. The company that Richard Bayes served had authority over the cutlery industry for the area in Sheffield. Richard Bayes was successfully sent his elder son, Samuel Bayes (1635–1681), to Trinity College Cambridge during the Commonwealth time and Samuel has get completed his degree in 1656. Joshua Bayes and two of his son in-law was closely involved in the contribution of chapel in the different place in Sheffield. One of the sons-in-law, Elias Wordsworth was the founder of this second chapel and his another son in-law which is John de la Rose was the minister of the chapel. In 1686, Joshua Bayes entered to a Dissenting academy to studied philosophy and divinity which located in the north of England, this academy had been established by Richard Frankland, who had been kick out from a curacy in the Church of England in 1662. Due to government sanctioned religious persecution, the academy had changed locations four times over different country and one of the place is near Sheffield. Bayes completed his studies in Frankland academy in 1694 and went to London where he was among the first group of Presbyterians in London to be ordained publicly to the ministry. In 1706, Bayes became the assistant minister at St. Thomas’ Street Chapel in the London. He also served as an assistant at the Leather Lane Chapel in Hatton Garden, London.
