I affirm that there should be harsher punishments for bullying because without them they will not stop. I consider there should be harsher punishments because the bullying will lead the kid to suicide. I also consider harsher punishments because the kid will start finding out some personal things about the kid and start doing some things that really affect the victim being bullied. One more example is that kids all around the world will start killing themselves if the bullying does not stop.

What would the criminal justice system be without punishment? Perhaps, the criminal justice system would not serve a function or cease to exist. Punishment is one of the main facets of the criminal justice system. It holds such significance that it even reflects the beliefs and values of a particular society. Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) once said “The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.” (Pollock, 2010: 315). Punishment has been around since the beginning of civilization. With its rich history, the concept of punishment has been analyzed by some of the most renowned theorists, some of which include Jeremy Bentham, Cesare Beccaria, Adolphe Quetelet and André-Michel Guerry (Pollock, 2010: 318). Once found guilty of an offense the type of punishment must be determined. There are many different rationales used to answer why it is necessary to inflict punishment. Rationales for punishment include retribution, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. To better understand these rationales ethical systems such as utilitarianism, ethical formalism and ethics of care can be used. The general public should be knowledgeable about punishment, even more so should professionals in the criminal justice field because they are directly linked to it in some way.
Mandatory sentencing is not anything new. It began in the 1970s. The main purpose for mandatory sentencing was to try to get rid of the drug lords and to eliminate most of the nation’s street drug selling. It was to impose that the same crime would have the same sentence all over the nation. Some of the negatives that rose from mandatory sentencing were nonviolent drug offenders and first time offenders who were receiving harsh sentences. Inmate populations and correction costs increased and pushed states to build more prisons. Judges were overloaded with these cases, and lengthy prison terms were mandated to these young offenders. Mandatory sentencing is an interesting topic in which I would like to discuss my opinions in going against mandatory sentencing. By the year 2000, that figure has jumped to over 2,014,000 prisoners. The current level of incarceration represents the continuation of a 25-year escalation of the nation's prison and jail population beginning in 1973. Currently the U.S. rate of 672 per 100,000 is second only to Russia, and represents a level of incarceration that is 6-10 times that of most industrialized nations. The rise in prison population in recent years is particularly remarkable given that crime rates have been falling nationally since 1992. With less crime, one might assume that fewer people would be sentenced to prison. This trend has been overridden by the increasing impact of lengthy mandatory sentencing policies.
Bullying has many negative effects on many people such as the victim, the bully himself, and society. Studies show these effects may turn out to be short-term or long-term.
Bullying has been around in Canadian history for over centuries. It has affected the development of many young teens and the growth patterns in forming young adults. It has also resulted in many unnecessary deaths. Bullying has not only caused physical damage but it also causes a lot of mental distress along with psychological problems. It can hinder the growing process of a child and potentially lead to life long permanent damage. In an effort to better protect those who are bullied, harsher punishments should be considered especially in cases causing death and for those who are young, more preventative programs should be instilled in schools.
We all agree that bullying is atrocious. Surveys Show That 77% of students are bullied mentally, verbally, and physically. Many schools are asking the same question: What do we do with the bullies? Many bullies end up getting kicked out of their school, because of their actions of bullying. I believe schools should not kick out bullies. Students who are found guilty of bullying other classmates should not be kicked out of school, as a consequence for their actions. If they are kicked out they: will most likely/ never improve their actions, will have a decreased level of education, and will lose self-confidence.
When parents and teacher understand the potential cause of why bullies decide to bully, they can make the decision to show their children that bullying isn 't right and could help to prevent bullying in the future. The effect of bullying could result hurting others and the bullies might be criminals in the future and these bullies have show lack of communication skill, but luckily there are programmes for them, such as church and today many schools have policy and these bullies should get more involved in their community and get an inside of what happened when kids get bullied and how bullying could lead to suicide.

As a form of punishment, it saves money when compared to a life sentence.
Bullying is a repeated harmful act that continues to affect millions of students every year. There is no stereotypical person that is a target for bullying; anyone can be its victim. There may not always be any signs of physical harm during these attacks, but our children always suffer emotional harm. Educating students, teachers and parents seems to be the only valid solution to this problem. There are many organizations that can educate the schools on this subject but for it to work people must care. Maybe one day, when enough people realize that this problem will not go away with out their help, we can eliminate bullying from our schools. Should schools have cyberbullying policies? Most schools now to this day have policies that involve any harassment towards another student. But what these policies don’t get involve with is the bullying that happens on social media during school grounds or after school where most cyberbullying incidents take action. Therefore, in order to stop cyberbullying one must consider is dangers and effects that has on its victims and consider a punishment for the bully harsh decisions.

Account will be made of the respective aggravating and mitigating circumstances that will have an effect on the sanctions that are available to impose on offenders. Consideration will also be given to the circumstances of the offender and to the effect that the crime has had on the victim. In theory by taking all the facts attributable to the offence into account it will be possible to ensure that any sanctions that are imposed upon offenders are proportionate to the offence that has been committed. Offenders deserve to suffer as a consequence of any crime that they have committed but the punishment should be justifiable. Only those who have offended deserve to be punished. Punishment should be neither too severe or too lenient. The purpose of the punishment is also a factor that should be taken into consideration when sentencing offenders.
