Therapeutic communities (TCs) are group-based environments aimed at helping offenders create positive behavioural change and rehabilitate into a positive part of society. Within prisons, therapeutic communities are structured in a way in which prisoners, often called residents, have an involvement in the practicalities of running the unit (Campling, 2001, cited in Jones, Brookes and Shuker, 2013). Different theoretical approaches are used within therapeutic communities to address offending behaviour, in the hope of rehabilitation and reduce recidivism rates. In offender rehabilitation within therapeutic communities, individuals undergo a process of reconstructing their identity and reassessing their life story. The transformative journey aims to create a person with better attitudes and behaviours, maintaining a distance from crime (Stevens, 2012, p.527). Within the UK, almost half of released prisoners will reoffend within 12 months, with therapeutic communities aiming to rehabilitate prisoners with the hope of reducing reoffending rates (Strick van Linschoten, 2017, p.285). Therapeutic communities facilitate, generate and strengthen the development of a transformed individual (Stevens, 2012, p.540). HMP Grendon developed into a complete therapeutic community (TC) prison in 1962. Blundeston, Dovegate, Gartree and Send are examples of English prisons which offer a therapeutic community within them. Offering places for up to 498 men and 40 women between them.
