Mark Twain is one of the most famous authors around the world but his popularity increased with his book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. His book consists of the many adventures of a child named Tom Sawyer and his friends on a small and peaceful town. His adventures includes a great amount of humor and fictional events that will entertain many readers. The book may look like a story made for children but there is a darker setting in the book. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is more gloomy than its humor because it shows how people take advantage of others for their selfish needs, the oppression of children by the adults, and it promotes animal cruelty. Tom Sawyer is a victim from the cruelty of the adults that are around him in his everyday life. As an example, it can be interpreted when “aunt Polly yells Tom’s name three times, as an adult seeking to pull the boy back into the oppressively mature society that will underpin the work's action and Tom's subsequent, reactionary behavior”(Batzer 4)’It is difficult for children to do what they want without any restrictions from adults. It also makes children realized that there is no freedom unless you have power or authority in society. In comparison, children are categorized as the lowest authority is society and many children becomes submissive into “an adult world that means to scold, plead, and spanks”(Baltzer 3) as a form of authority. This shows many cases of child abuse when the parents uses their authority to use violence to educate their children, even if the children didn’t do anything wrong to get punished. In addition, if the children did do something bad, it is not necessary to use violence against children since they don’t know the difference in what is right or wrong. Violence can influence the behavior of a child as they grow up and it can make the child to be as violent as their parents since kids are most likely to learn from their parents.
