Humanity Mark Twain’s novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is commonly taught to high school juniors as a classic. Although the book is notorious for its racial slurs, stereotypes, etc., Twain manages to use harsh, truthful topics from American history to exploit the true meaning of humanity. Therefore, I believe that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should remain as part of the curriculum taught to high school juniors. In the novel Twain allows for Huck’s morality to change multiple times. When Huck and Jim are on their way down the Mississippi River they come to a town called Cairo. Jim is feverish with the excitement of being so close to freedom, whereas Huck is feverish because he recognizes that he is helping Jim, a runaway …show more content…
The two are obviously being chased so Huck decides to help them lose the dogs that are after them. The men then join Huck and Jim on their adventures. The two men tell Huck and Jim that they are a King and a Duke from a small town, Huck realizes that they are simply con men but decides to go along with their story to keep the peace. One day they stumble upon a desolate town, where they find a preaching going on under some shacks with a crowd of people surrounding. The King and the Duke spot the opportunity to make some money. The King lies to the crowd trying to show the hardships of being a pirate in the Indian Ocean. He goes on and on about how he has gone through horrible things and now has no money to continue his journey. When the King finishes his story the crowd is emotional and wants to help this pirate by giving him money. They shout, “Take up a collection for him, take up a collection” (132). Twain uses evangelism, the zealous preaching of a gospel in order to collect money, chicanery, the deception of trickery, and sentimentality, the displaying of excessive emotion, in this scene to show that the crowd is thinking in the moment and makes a poor decision that would not normally be made with a little extra caution and or thought. Racism is a substantial part of this book and although it was normal for people to be racist in this time period it is unacceptable now. The “n-word” is used frequently in the book and the literal meaning of the word is a term used for a member of any dark-skinned race. Although this term is derogatory now it was normal for an African American to be called the “n-word” during the time of the book. I do believe that the “n-word” when used by an authoritative adult, such as a teacher, children can be offended and it could affect the way some view their teacher and of course the book entirely. This being said I do not believe that the whole book should not be taught over this racist
“Who gets to decide what I get to read in schools?” This question was brought up by Dr. Paul Olsen in a recent lecture. Upon arriving at Cairo, Huck must decide if he should go along with society and turn Jim in as a runaway slave, or keep his promise to his friend, and see him through to freedom. Huck feels guilty not turning Jim in when he hears him talking about hiring an abolitionist to steal his family. He does not think it is right to help take away slaves from people that he doesn 't even know. To turn Jim in for these reasons would be the influence of society on Huck. Huck 's decision on this matter marks another major step in Huck 's moral progression, because he decides not to turn in Jim on his own. This is the first time he makes a decision all on his own based on his own morality. They stop at Grangerford’s Farm, in Tennessee, after the raft is temporality destroyed. With Huck busy with the Grangerford family, Jim was able to rebuild the raft. Huck just met the Grangerfords, but fits right in immediately. He later feels that someone should take the time to write poetry about Emmeline Grangerford, recently deceased, since she always took the time to write about other people who died. He even tries to write the poetry himself, but it doesn 't turn out right. Then he also sees people shooting at each other makes him sick to his stomach. He sees it as an act against humanity and he simply cannot relate or understand how humans can treat each other in such an uncivil
High Schools in the United States should not ban The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This book is one of the most important components of American literature in our libraries today, it throws the reader into a time when slavery was lawful and accepted, and gives the reader a new perspective on slavery in general. Until civil rights groups can come up with a better argument than the word “nigger” creating a “hostile work environment”(Zwick) it should not be taken off the required reading list of any High School in the country.
These problems, that have been faced and are being faced in America must be talked about. Just not with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as the platform. Jane Smiley said that “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has little to offer in the way of greatness” and honestly she couldn't be more right. (Say it ain’t so Huck 356) There are an overwhelming number of novels that could explain American slavery and racism. Jane Smiley said that “Uncle Tom’s Cabin’s portrayal of an array of thoughtful, autonomous, and passionate characters leaves Huck Finn far behind.” (Say it Ain’t so, Huck 358) The discussion of slavery and the harsh racism from whites to blacks need to happen in classrooms. Not with Huckfinn because it is outdated. Mark Twain once said that, “a ‘classic’ is a book which people praise but don't read.” Contradicting to his own novel, Twain’s HuckFinn was praised without being truly read. Meaning that its title as a classic is wrong. Its way easier for HuckFinn to be taught wrong then right. Looking at one of the first encounters of the book, in the scenes where all the boys are in a “gang” “some thought it would be good to kill the families.” (Twain 21) The book set in pre-civil war time. From the prospective a white kid’s opinion on slavery. One of the pure goals of the book it is to talk about how people were racist and didn't even realize it. Huck’s whole mentality towards Jim shows this. Jane Smiley noted that twain really saw Jim as no more than Huck’s sidekick.” (Say it Ain’t so Huck 335) While slavery is very present in today’s day and age it is very different then it was during the antebellum time period. In fact, racism today is completely different then it was just 25 years ago. Jane Smiley says “Jim is never autonomous, never has a vote, always finds his purpose subordinate to Huck’s, and like every good sidekick, he never minds.” Every high school student knows that America has a history
One aspect of the novel in which Twain uses satire is the idea of family feuds. Midway through the novel, Huck meets young Buck Grangerford. Huck soon learns of an everlasting feud existing between the Grangerfords and the neighboring family, the Shepherdsons. Buck explains to Huck his fierce hatred for the Shepherdson family, but also that he truly doesn’t know why there is a feud or how it came to be. The reader finds out that the two feuding families essentially switch off killing members of the opposing family.

Racial content, tension, and slurs are used in people’s everyday lives. If people can use these words outside of school why would they not be allowed to be talked about in school? It is important for everyone to be informed about these racial tensions. This book also shows the reader what is was like to be growing up in this time period. Although this book uses the n-word, it uses it in a historical way. Using these racist words explains the way of thinking of the south in the 1930s. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is appropriate to use and read in school.

As a result, Twain utilizes Huck to depict an evolving character in the novel. This is made prominent by Huck’s changes in morals against racism and maturity by being able to understand what is right and what is wrong. Which is displayed through the experiences that Huck goes through in the novel. Just as a child gets older and starts to break away from the environment that was given to him and the morals bestowed upon him. When the child begins to create it’s own morals and starts to realize what is right from wrong the child is no longer a child it becomes a mature adult of it’s own in a society. Paralleling to Huck going from an immature child to a mature young adult in the end of the novel.
Ultimately, Mark Twain’s ageless classic, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” should remain taught in schools. There are many lessons to be taught and learned by reading and understanding Huckleberry Finn. Although some sources may say that a child can pick up this book and think it is ok to lie, ok to steal and ok to be blasphemous, this is not the case (Culture Shock). If future students are unable to read and comprehend the book they will be less off than other students. Society should not ban a book from schools that allows students to learn about our ancestors just because it is offensive to some individuals.
Huck Finn, a narcissistic and unreliable young boy, slowly morphs into a courteous figure of respect and selflessness. After Pap abducts the young and civilized Huck, Huck descends into his old habits of lies and half-truths. However, upon helping a runaway slave escape, Huck regains morality and a sense of purpose. Throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Huck lies to characters, casting the authenticity of the story into doubt but illustrating Huck’s gradual rejection of lying for himself and a shift towards lying for others.
The Adventure’s of Huckleberry Finn’s unique ability to incorporate moral lessons through satire and simmilar literary techniques prove it to be vital for High school students, especially at Rye, to read. The vast nature of things it teaches is something very rare for one book to do. It not only provides the reader with important life themes like other great novels do but it also shocks the reader to show the power of racism which makes it one of the greatest pieces of literature of all time. Just think of how different things would be if no one had read such an important book.
So when Huck fakes his death and runs away to live on an island he is faced with yet another problem, which revolves around the controversial issue of the time of racism. While living on the island he meets Jim, who was a slave, but Huck soon learns that he has run off and now in the process of making his way up north to Canada. Here Huck is faced with his first tough decision, to go with Jim and help him, or just go and tell the officials of a runaway slave and get the reward. Huck reluctantly joins Jim and promises to get him to free land for the sake of a good adventure, but he still feels guilty to be conversing with a runaway slave, let alone help him escape. Along the way Huck has many challenges, which are just like this one.
Morality has always been defined as having either a good or evil conscious. There is always a choice that a character makes that defines their moral integrity in a literary work and distinguishes them as the hero. In Mark Twain’s story, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, not only does Huck encounters a number of moral circumstances where he or other characters displays situations in which moral ethics is called to questioned, but it proves that despite the religious influence and social expectation, it is through Huck that in order to do what is morally right, one must challenge the moral teaching of the world. Through observation of his world, Huck makes morally ambiguous choices that though may be against his moral teachings. Choice proves that to act on one’s own judgement despite societies expectations demonstrates that hypocrisy of the community as Twain clearly depicts and satirizes Southern society, he depicts the violence and racism that was described as “silvilization”(Kelly). As the community in Twain’s novel follows the general religious teachings and distinguishes the binaries associated with good and evil, Huck is forced to forsake these teachings and goes on a journey to discover his own moral understanding.
Despite all the criticism, of racism and other questionable material for young readers, Mark Twain’s The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn is a superbly written novel, which in the opinion of this reviewer should not be remove the literary cannon. Twain’s novel is a coming of age story that teaches young people many valuable lessons and to some extend makes students reexamine their own lives and morals. The most common argument for its removal from the literary canon is that the novel is too racist; it offends black readers, perpetuates cheap slave-era stereotypes, and deserves no place on today’s bookshelves. However one must ask if Twain is encouraging traditional southern racism or is Twain disputing these idea.
