Living a lie eventually eats you alive. In the play, Hamlet, by William

Shakespeare, the main character goes through many challenges. He must find a way

to deal with the death of his father, seek out his revenge and lose the woman he

loves, all the while he slowly inches closer to death. He learns that he cannot trust

anyone, even himself, in life anymore. He casts himself out of acceptance, and into

isolation over time, by acting crazy. Hamlet seems to catch the “poison” of insanity.

When Hamlet firsts learns of his father’s murder and that the killer “now

wears his crown” (I. v. 47). He chooses to avenge his father, and kill the murderer,

his uncle. Trying to remain calm and not be overcome by rage and betrayal, he starts

Knowing what nobody else does, he starts to imagine, or truly see, people

for who they really are. He finds out that his friend are easily sold for money, he

loses trust with those around him, and can see the chain of power is out of place.

Though he knows to “taint not thy mind” (I. v. 92). He eventually gives into complete

and utter darkness.Hamlet despises his uncle, Claudius, and realizes “that one may smile, and

smile, be a villain” (I. v. 106). Nobody can see that Claudius is to blame, except for

himself. However, Hamlet is weary upon killing the new king, for “who would bear

the whips and scorns of time” (III. i. 78). For is revenge worth the eternal torture of

Hell? Is avenging his father more important than being damned to Hell? The more

crazy Hamlet acts, the more he seems to actually lose control of himself. Hamlet’s

act becomes reality, and suddenly the things he does isn’t through acting, but

through insanity. His mind obsesses over killing the king, and the passing time just

helps the thought dig deeper inside of his head. Hamlet is being poisoned from the

inside.
