In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Alexie shows friendships, and how the value of friendship is stronger than anything. Rowdy, Arnold’s best friend for life, his protection and secret keeper; Roger, Arnold’s unexpected, huge, athletic, white friend shows how friendships can come from the biggest rivalries; Gordy, the nerdy white kid who stood up for Arnold when teachers were picking on him, shows that sometimes being brave and standing up for what’s right will make new friends, all show different friendships and how they affect people.

Gordy a nerdy white kid who wanted nothing to do with anyone, stood up for Arnold in class when a teacher was picking on him. Arnold was explaining how petrified wood was made to the class, the teacher, Mr.Dodge didn’t believe him until Gordy the class genius raised his hand, “Uh actually, Arnold is right about petrified wood. That’s what happens.” He could’ve just sat there and watched the other kids laugh, but he stood up for him, and it was a start to a great friendship. He makes Arnold feel really good about his cartoons. He said that if he loves it, and it takes him places then he can’t go wrong, “Wow, this dude was a poet. My cartoons aren’t just good for giggles; they were also good for poetry.” Cartoons are such a huge part of Arnold’s life and if he stopped because of insecurity a part of him would be lost.
