Peter Chelsom’s romantic comedy Serendipity has been called everything from joyful and charming to predictable and cheesy. While both grabbing for the last pair of black cashmere gloves at Bloomingdales's in New York, Sara Thomas and Jonathan Trager meet. They instantly feel an undeniable connection. Despite each being in a separate relationship at the time. Serendipity is, “the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way” (Dictionary.com). Through the set designs, characterization, and symbolism the movie Serendipity shows how destiny is the most important factor in determining if two people are meant to be together. John Cusack does an outstanding job of portraying Jonathan, a generally confused man who comes alive when he is with or searching for Sara. Kate Beckingsdale also does a wonderful portrayal of Sara, a woman who’s life revolves around the idea of destiny. Sara’s obsession with fate is illustrated by how she solely bases her decisions on whether something feels right. Sara convinces Jonathan, who is a realist, to accept that if something is, “meant to be” then eventually it will happen. Jonathan realizes that this situation is not in his control and he has to leave it up to destiny. On the other hand, Sara realizes that she can not always leave everything up to fate. If you want something, you have to go and seek it out yourself. She realizes this when she goes to New York to look for Jonathan, a week before her wedding. Both characters influence each other to realize that they can neither be too realistic nor too oblivious, in thinking that they can do too much or too little about being with each other. This realization, paired with the acting in Serendipity clearly illustrate the importance of fate and
