Deception In Much Ado About Nothing

What makes the plot of Much Ado About Nothing so interesting is the use of deception and betrayal; though deception is used more frequently than betrayal. To deceive someone is “to cause (someone) to believe something that is not true, typically in order to gain some personal advantage.” Throughout the book divergent people manipulate others for an advantage. Whether deception is okay or not depends on the intentions of the deceivers – if the intention is to promote happiness, then the deceiver is a good friend, but if the deceiver intends harm, then he’s a bastard. The play is built on the problems caused by deception.. Benedict and Beatrice are deceived into thinking they love each other. Hero and Ursula deceived Beatrice and for that, they are good friends. Don Pedro, Claudio and Leonato deceived Benedick and that makes them good friends as well. However, Don John deceived Claudio into thinking hero b...
“And when I lived, I was your other wife, And when you loved, you were my other husband(Shakespeare 60).” In the beginning of the play it was overwhelming, steeped in love at first sight between Hero and Claudio, until Don John’s evil-manner took a role in ruining the love between them. And because of this a conflict developed between them, but was resolved when their vigorous love for one another overcame the conflict. In Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, Hero serves as the foil character of Claudio because of Hero’s dignified, well-mannered, eminent reputation is illuminated through Claudio’s insecure, accusing, and doubtful weakness; thereby, interminably influencing the conflict in the plot.
In today's society, true love can be described as someone buying a sparkly present for the significant other, celebrating their special anniversary with a beautiful getaway from their hectic life, or even risking anything in the world for that one person. These are all real examples of true love but these are also the things that Claudio didn’t do to show his affection and love towards Hero. Instead, he chose to humiliate her on their wedding day, he didn’t trust her to stay faithful until marriage, and even “killed” her. In the play, Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, the main characters, Hero, and Claudio, are not truly in love and their actions display that.

The characters in Much Ado About Nothing are easily fooled into inadequate situations that could easily be prevented by a little investigation. We can only imagine how simple their lives would be if Claudio simply inquired to Hero about her supposed actions the night before the wedding. On the other hand, Beatrice and Benedick may never have fallen in love if it were not for the trickery that entangled them. Yet again, if their friends come right out and suggest that it might be a possibility, they could grow fond of the idea and embrace it none the less. Shakespeare convinces us that it is easier to uncover the truth rather than to clean up a mess from premature actions based on an illusion.

One of Shakespeare’s most famous plays is Much Ado About Nothing and it specifically shows the tragic flaws of each and every character throughout the story. One character that will be mainly focused on that’s the most tragically flawed, is Claudio because he’s passionate about his love for Hero and how he’s easily manipulated.

Love is a powerful word, deception is a quick way to gain little things and lose big things, and beauty is not always something the is visible to the eyes.

The play contains numerous examples of schemes that are used to manipulate the thoughts of other characters; it is the major theme that resonates throughout the play. Ironically, it is one of these themes that bring serenity to the chaos that encompasses most of the play.
The title of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing has sparked scholarly debates about its meaning for centuries. Some say it is a play on the term “noting”, revolving around the theme of all sorts of deceptions by all sorts of appearances (Rossiter 163). Both the ensemble and individual cast members assist in achieving Whedon's vision by creating an atmosphere that seems familiar if only that it could be our own family and friends throwing that same banter back and forth between each other. Their playful and occasionally raw performances combine with a spectacular setting to help make Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing a stellar film that is a nearly perfect modern translation of a classic, centuries old
Katherine Paterson says, “Real maturity, which most of us never achieve, is when you realize that you’re not the center of the universe.” Claudio, a character from Much Ado About Nothing, is a perfect example of this quote. Throughout most of the play Claudio is only concerned about how other people and events affect him. However, the obstacles and positions he is put in do not help the situation. The one of the main themes of this play is deception, which Claudio, as well as most of the other characters in the play, fall victim. In Much Ado About Nothing Claudio begins the play with a tendency to be very gullible and paranoid about everything, and he continues to show his immaturity by seeking revenge when he is upset; Claudio finally matures when he accepts that he was wrong and is willing to take the punishment that goes with his mistakes.

With its entangled plots and eloquent use of words, Much Ado About Nothing is a story that has the ability to entertain the masses, both young and old. Shakespeare’s use of figurative language along with situation creates such vivid imagery that carries the drama from beginning to end. The common thread of jealousy ties together the main plots in Much Ado About Nothing, Othello, and The Winter's Tale. In each of these plays, the main conflict is centered around some form of jealousy. While jealousy is the mutual, most prominent cause for turmoil in these plays, its effects on the characters, and ultimately the plots, is different in each case. This difference has much to do with the way in which the concept of jealousy is woven into each play, and what it is intended to accomplish.
Much Ado about Nothing is set in the busy port town of Messina; this bustling port city is where the play opens. Messina’s hot climate makes it tranquil and agricultural; meaning the men returning from battle would view Messina as a welcome respite from the war. The idea of the soldiers returning to an idyllic setting, away from the battlefield, creates a ‘holiday mood’ at the start of the play. While the majority of the play is set at Leonato’s house, Leonato’s orchard figures as a central place of action too, particularly the blossoming of Beatrice and Benedick’s relationship, Shakespeare uses the beautiful garden to create a perfect backdrop for the whimsical romance that characterises the play. The setting of Much Ado about Nothing is also bigger than its physical realm; Shakespeare chooses to start the play in this tranquil setting to emphasise that pastoral will be an important theme in this play.
