Thelma & Louise’s wide appeal among women spectators is due to the use of the female gaze. The female gaze is presented from a female perspective and reflects female attitudes. It is often used because of the creators gender or because it is aimed at a female audience. The female gaze uses mockery as a device to illustrate the sexism of the male gaze. Stereotyping, depicting men as spectacles, and celebrating female friendships are the ways that Thelma & Louise utilizes mockery. This mockery opens the audience’s eyes to the idea of feminism. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon play Thelma and Louise, two working-class friends who together have planned a weekend getaway from the men in their lives. Though the road trip starts out as a good time, the pair eventually finds themselves at a bar. After a tipsy Thelma ends up in the parking lot of the bar with a would-be rapist that Louise shoots, the two decide that they have no choice but to go on the run. The pair is pursued by a police officer sympathetic toward their plight. He chases them to the Grand Canyon, where the women make a fateful decision about their lives. Thelma and Darryl do not have any children because “he says he’s not ready yet. He says he’s still too much of a kid himself. He kinda prides himself on being infantile” (Thelma and Louise). It is either a misogynist film about a terrifying, destroying woman, or it is a film that liberates the female character from the restrictive and oppressed melodramatic situation that render her helpless” (Kolker 124). There are arguably two extreme portrayals of the character of Phyllis Dietrichson in Double Indemnity; neither one is an accurate or fare portrayal.
Women’s roles in movies have changed dramatically throughout the years. As a result of the changing societal norms, women have experienced more transition in their roles than any other class. During the period of classical Hollywood cinema, both society and the film industry preached that women should be dependent on men and remain in home in order to guarantee stability in the community and the family. Women did not have predominated roles in movies such as being the heroin. The 1940’s film Gilda wasn’t an exception. In Gilda, the female character mainly had two different stereotypes. The female character was first stereotyped as a sex object and the second stereotyped as a scorned woman who has to be punished.
In today’s world, men and women are perceived equally by the society. In the past, authority and control define men while women are given the characteristic of helplessness. Men are able to get hold of high positions while women usually are subservient to them. In movies, we would usually see women portray roles that are degrading due to the stereotypical notions they associate with this gender group. Moulin Rouge, a movie set during the 1900s narrates the story of a courtesan woman, Satine, as she undergoes hardships to earn money, experiences love but unfortunately, due to her irrational choices, faces tragic consequences at the end. Satine is a symbol of how women are being treated by the society during the era before post-feminism, where men have superiority over women. As the plot develops, Satine transforms from a worthless prostitute to someone who is courageous and willing to face her fears in order to attain her aspirations. Psychoanalyst theory and feminist analysis are apparent throughout the film. In the book Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center written by bell hooks, an African-American author, social activist and feminist first published in 1984 the author explains what she believes are the core principles of feminism. Throughout the book the author examines the early feminist theory and goes on to criticize it saying that it did not aim for a systematic change also that the movement has the potential to improve the lives of both men and women immensely.
