Going into my junior year of high school, I decided to get out of my comfort zone, so for one of my electives, I had chosen theatre class. Coming into theater class on the first day of school, the atmosphere seemed really nice. None of the students knew who the teacher was because she was new and had just moved to Arkansas from New York. The first day in Theatre class was going fine, we went around the room and everyone introduced themselves. Fast forward to the middle of the semester Mrs. Reed, the theater teacher was getting ready to put on a production. She was so focused on the production that she didn’t assign work for her actual classes that she taught. Modern professional theatre is characterized by the widespread challenge to established rules surrounding theatrical representation. This resulted in the development of many new forms of theatre. Such included modernism, expressionism, impressionism, political theatre and other forms of experimental theatre. It is also characterized by the continuing development of already established theatrical forms like naturalism and realism. As years went by, the reputation of modern theatre has been improving, after being belittled through the nineteenth century. However, the growth of other media, more specifically movies, resulted in a smaller role culturally.
In this essay I will address racial issues in Musical theatre, specifically the black and white divide. I have chosen this subject because I find it interesting how racism used to be so accepted in society, and although it’s decreasing presence it is still an issue today. I will be looking at two similar yet contrasting musicals written at different times. Both these musicals have racial issues through their storyline. I will look at the similarities and differences between these two musicals and how racial issues are expressed. Additionally I will consider when the shows were written; what impact these musicals had on society and vice versa.
I was a typical 6th grader with a love for social time and hatred towards pointless homework. As I was tapping my foot on my creaking wooden desk with my book opened pretending to read, Mr. Daniels was watching over me like a bird that just gave birth to chicken eggs. I had a feeling she was going to ask me a question about what I was reading. I realized from that point on to always trust my instincts. Mrs. Daniels tall toothpick shaped body leaned over and asked me to summarize the first chapter in front of the whole class. Due to not even beginning to read the first page I told her I did not even know where to begin. Since I was not prepared for class, not participating, and being rude about my task at hand I received a punishment. My punishment was every week I had to write a summary in my own words about the chapter I had read. My eyes rolled in the back of my head so far I didn't know if they would ever go back to normal. Technical Theatre class was a great learning experience for me. When I first signed up for the class, I wasn’t really looking forward to it. I had always been quite clumsy, and I’d never been very handy; so I didn’t think I would be of much use to the set building process. However, before the building process began, the class was taught how to properly and safely use power tools. Being educated on how to handle the equipment made me feel a lot more confident. Now, I’m proud of myself because I ended up getting a lot of work done that I didn’t think I was capable of.

However its origins mainly lie in the early years of the last century. Along with finding my passion for theater, I also found one of my favorite teachers during my time in Junior High. His name was Mr. Rodrigue, and he was my homeroom and science teacher for both seventh and eighth grade. He was one of the first teachers that was every real with me. He was a very open and honest teacher who treated his students like adults. Mr. Rodrigue had this wit and sense of humor that made him more personable than any of my other teachers. I loved how he gave everyone in our homeroom nicknames, for instance, mine was “Higgy-Baby”. To this day I do not know how he came up with a name like that, but I know that while I was in his classroom, I was never called just Alyssa. While I learned many new and interesting things in his science class, I remember more of the life lessons that he taught during homeroom. In this paper, I will be focusing briefly on my knowledge and understanding of the concept of Applied theatre and one of its theatre form, which is Theatre in Education. The term Applied Theatre is a broad range of dramatic activity carried out by a crowd of diverse bodies and groups.
During the Ensemble Unit in our JV Theatre class, everyone learned how to become a better team member. Through exercises such as the qualifier game, ball game, and tic-tac-toe, we learned to work together and play however would best benefit the whole team. These lessons will help us become better actors because we have learned to trust each other, but also to be someone that the whole class can rely on when in need. We will work together and for each other until we succeed.
Theatre will always survive in our changing society. It provides us with a mirror of the society within which we live, and where conflicts we experience are acted out on stage before us. It provides us with characters with which we identify with. The audience observes the emotions and actions as they happen and share the experience with the characters in real time.
Before I started Introduction to Theatre class, I had been only to a couple of plays in my life. Just in this semester I’ve been to about ten plays and have learned so much about the art of theatre. The information I retained from class will help out a lot in the future, but the most important part of this class was the shadowing experience of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. With being able to get an inside look at this play during rehearsal and then going to see the performance was an incredible experience. By going to the rehearsal and then seeing the show, I was able to learn and understand more on how the theatre works. From there, I could understand the long process the actors and directors have to go through before the opening show happens.
Historically, drama, and indeed all areas of the arts, have been seen to make an unimportant contribution to society as a whole. As recently as the mid to late 20th century, the arts were seen as a luxury, and a purely leisure exercise or hobby, with only gifted children having access to classically defined art forms such as music or art. This ideology still exists in some form today, although the arts are beginning to be recognised as an integral part of our everyday and working lives. Many drama practitioners and educators consider the arts to be a growing power within the economy, and that drama has benefits to society, culture, and a person’s inner development. These benefits have shaped the incorporation and delivery of drama within Queensland schools. This essay will examine how, by teachers delivering a rich aesthetic experience to students through drama in schools, students are provided with opportunities to develop self identity and equipping them with a skill set that is transferable across a variety of learning areas.
Throughout my years in middle school I participated in band the entire time, which was fun in my opinion. When I first started band I was this quiet, and shy girl who had extreme stage fright, it was extremely difficult for me to present projects, or assignments in front of others. As the months progressed, I was practicing my first couple of songs for a band performance. There was over sixty people at my first concert and the entire time I felt nervous, and scared hoping it to be over. After, when I sat in my car, driving home, I could not stop thinking about my success that night which inspired me to do better.
The show was a slightly impromptu encore performance that was something I hadn’t experienced before. There was a sense of community in the auditorium. The people were friendly and the tickets were based on donation. The greeters were wearing t-shirts advertising the show and they were friendly to guests. There were no concessions but the lovely t-shirts the greeters were wearing were on sale.
My experience watching a live theatre performance on stage was a fascinating one, most especially since it was my first time. I attended a staged performance of “The History Boys” in a small theatre called “The Little Theatre of Alexandria” at 8:00 pm on Wednesday June 8, 2016 in Alexandria, Virginia. The overall production of the play was a resounding experience for me particularly the performance of the actors and the design of the scene made the play seem real.
