The Zuñi Indians live, today, on the Zuñi Reservation in west-central New Mexico. They occupying the north bank of the upper Zuni river valley of western New Mexico and Eastern Arizona since at least 700 A.D. (Theodore Frisbie; Encyclopedia), Resisters, is the best word to describe the Zuni people. They resisted acculturation. They resisted change to their ceremonial cycle. They are a complex people. They have survived because they have resisted (Arizona Rocks Tours), and unlike many other Native American tribes, the Zuñi Indians were never forced to leave their homelands and are even still living there today. (Bigorrin; Learn for today). Now the Zuñi are the more popular name of the Pueblo tribe, though the natives do not call themselves by this name. They have been known to call themselves by Ashiwi, which means flesh. (The Catholic Encyclopedia.). They are a strong matrilineal clan and start young when it comes to family and clan relations. They hold amazing traditions and religious system with priest and women being involved in political situations and men holding more rank in what they have knowledge and skill in. Many things all coming to a head in religion and holding its main roots there. (Theodore Frisbie; Encyclopedia). The Zuni call their home the Middle Place and they believe it is located at the center of the universe. (Arizona Rocks Tours) The Zuñi are a large group of people formed by many clans. They are known as an exogamous clan (Page 245; Cultural Anthropology; 14th Edition; Ember), so within their tribal ways one does not marry within one’s own clan, and though one should not marry within the father’s clan, it does occasionally occur more than it seems necessary. The Zuñi believe that their recently dead will join with the past dead, their spirits, known as Kachinas. The believe that this is to happen at the bottom of a nearby lake where their deceased will lead a life of singing and dancing and that they will, in their time in the afterworld, bring rain to the living Zuñi people that are still among the living. (Page 340; Cultural Anthropology: 14th Edition; Ember). The desire for rain was the predominant theme in Zuni ritual. Water imagery was plentiful. (Arizona Rocks Tours). Following death, the name of the deceased ceases to be used, except for rain priests, whose names are invoked by extant members to bring rain. (Countries and their Cultures).

According to Kiowa Nation, the Tai-me is the most sacred possession of the tribe. The first Tai-me came from an Arapaho man who married into the tribe in the 1700’s. There once was three Tai-me figures which were, the “woman”, the “man”, and another figure, however Osgaes captured the figures but returned them in 1837 when the treaty was signed. Then the Utes captured two of the figures and they never returned. The Tai-me keeper has many important roles in the Sun Dance such as deciding whether the dance will be held and preparing for the dance. The social and political organization of the Basseri and the Nuer are very much different. The Basseri’s social organization is based upon that of nuclear families; they are also neolocal, meaning that upon marriage a couple starts their own nuclear family in a new tent. After marriage, in order for the couple to begin a new household, the husband usually receives part of his father’s herd and at times, if not given any animals, the husband can work and receive animals as a payment. During the spring, the nomadic tribes can be supported in large numbers in a single camp; while during the winter, camps are setup in smaller groups. The Basseri reckon descent patrilineally where inheritance is usually from father to son. A woman bestows membership rights to her own tribe or her offspring. The Basseri consider themselves one unified tribe because they are all subsumed under the authority of a single leader, the chief of all the Basseri.
For several hundred years people have sought answers to the Indian problems, who are the Indians, and what rights do they have? These questions may seem simple, but the answers themselves present a difficult number of further questions and answers. State and Federal governments have tried to provide some order with a number of laws and policies, sometimes resulting in state and federal conflicts. The Federal Government's attempt to deal with Indian tribes can be easily understood by following the history of Federal Indian Policy. Indians all over the United States fought policies which threatened to destroy their familial bonds and traditions. The Passamaquoddy Indian Tribe of Maine, resisted no less than these other tribes, however, thereby also suffering a hostile anti-Indian environment from the Federal Government and their own State, Maine. But because the Passamaquoddy Tribe was located in such a remote area, they escaped many federal Indian policies.
This world and the world of spirits are transformations of each other. At death a cotton mask - a "white cloud mask" - is placed on the face of a dead person. The spirits of the dead return to this world as kachinas. All kachinas are believed to take on cloud form of what Pueblo call "to be cloud people" and their spiritual essence, or navala, is a liquid that is manifested as rainfall. When the kachinas (as ritual figures) depart, they are petitioned, "When you return to your homes bring this message to them that, without delay, they may have mercy for us with their liquid essence [rain] so that all things may grow and life may be bountiful." Everything, in Pueblo belief, is dependent on rainfall, which, when combined with Mother Earth, is the essence of all things. Hence navala is also the essence of the individual self, conceived of as a liquid, and a Pueblo will say, "I have the liquid essence of my fathers," to express the English notion of being of the same flesh and blood.
The Zuni Indians were and are a group of Indians in the southwest area of the United States and Northern Mexico. It seems that they have lived in this area for nearly 4000 years, and maybe more if their ancestry can be traced as they seem to believe to the Mogollon group of Native Americans who grew out of the first prehistoric inhabitants of that area of America. The name Mogollon comes from the Mogollon mountain range named by the first Spanish explorers in the early 1500’s such as Coronado. There is also a good possibility that they may be able to trace their existence to the Anasazi culture from around the same time as the Mogollon peoples as well.
According to tribal legend, “when the life force of the universe first called into earth, the ancient forebears of the Quapaw people were adrift in the froth of the sea. In time, they say, the breath of the sky set them ashore on the glistening coast.” Tradition, as well as historical and archeological evidence says that these tribes of people were wandering the Ohio Valley well before the 15th century. The Quapaw Tribe of Indians, also known as the O-Gah-Pah, or several other translations of the word which in general terms means “downstream people” or the “ones from downstream”, along with their Dhegiha Sioux kinsmen (the Osage, Ponca, Kansa, and Omaha) attained a cultural level of excellence that was only surpassed by the tribes in central Mexico and Peru. The Quapaw Tribe of Indians, history, culture, values, strength, and perseverance have allowed them to stay united as a tribe and sets them apart from other Indian tribes, although they deserve a better fate (Baird “The Quapaw People” 2).
People have been living in America for countless years, even before Europeans had discovered and populated it. These people, named Native Americans or American Indians, have a unique and singular culture and lifestyle unlike any other. Native Americans were divided into several groups or tribes. Each one tribe developed an own language, housing, clothing, and other cultural aspects. As we take a look into their society’s customs we can learn additional information about the lives of these indigenous people of the United States.
The Hopi have a highly developed belief system which contains many gods and spirits. Ceremonies, rituals, dances, songs, and prayers are celebrated in year-round. The Hopi believed they were led to the arid southwestern region of America by their creator, because he knew they had the power to evoke rain with power and prayer. Consequently, the Hopi are connected to their land, its agricultural cycles and the constant quest for rainfall, in a religious way. The religious center of the community is the kiva, which is an underground room with a ladder protruding above the roof. The kiva is very important for several reasons. From the kiva, a connection is made with the center of the earth. Also, the kiva is symbolic for the emergence to this world. The room would represent the underworld and the ladder would represent the way to the upper world. In fact, a room is kept in the house to store ceremonial objects. A sacred ear of corn protects the room and symbolizes the ancestry of the family members. Kachinas are also a focal point of the religion. For a Hopi, they signify spirits of ancestors, dieties of the natural world, or intermediaries between man and gods. The Hopi believe that they are the earth's caretakers, and with the successful performance of their ceremonial cycle, the world will remain in balance, the gods will be happy and rain will come. Because they think of their crops as gifts, the Hopi Indians live in harmony with the environment.
