Charlotte Perkins Gilman published “The Yellow Wallpaper” in 1892 as a representation of how women and their roles were defined by society. This was a time in our nation’s history when social Darwinism was the norm, and women were beginning to push back against society’s role of women in relation to men. Society viewed women as property and both mentally and physically inferior to men, and women were thought to be chaotic, irrational, and intellectually inferior to men. Darwin concludes that “the chief distinction in the intellectual powers of the two sexes is shewn by man attaining to a higher eminence, in whatever he takes up, than woman can attain” (The Descent of Man). Also, Darwin publishes that “man is more courageous, pugnacious, and energetic than woman, and has a more inventive genius [and] his brain is absolutely larger” (The Descent of Man). These conclusions were embraced by Victorian society and helped to solidify the role of women as subservient to their husbands and men in general. Women were not recognized as equal partners in a marriage, and this is the evidenced between the narrator and John in “The Yellow Wallpaper.” Perkins Gilman creates the narrator’s husband, John, as a significant figure of repression in “The Yellow Wallpaper.” John is not only the husband, but a doctor who will have input in the narrator’s medical care. John embodies both the societal ideology that men rule over their wives, and the scientific representation of man’s superiority over woman. This repression prevented women from expressing their inner self, and they were not free to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. Perkins Gilman represents this repression as the yellow color, which is described as “a smouldering unclean yellow … a sickly sulphur tint” (688). This repression did not show favoritism or racism; it was felt by every woman from every aspect of society. This repression invaded the home, the work environment, the social classes, and the government. No woman from any part of society was untouched by this repression, and Perkins Gilman represents this when she wrote about the “yellow smell” (694). All sense of individuality and self worth is taken way from the narrator when her name is never revealed to the audience. Furthermore, John continues to belittle his wife by giving her the command to not walk around at night. Although the John thinks in his mind that he is looking out for the best interest of his wife, in actuality, he is taking away his wife’s abilities to make choices for herself. There is a possibility that John’s controlling personality is one of the factors that led to his wife’s psychosis. One of the most notable feminists of that period was the writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. She was also one of the most influential feminists who felt strongly about and spoke frequently on the nineteenth-century lives for women. Her short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper" characterizes the condition of women of the nineteenth century through the main character’s life and actions in the text. It is considered to be one of the most influential pieces because of its realism and prime examples of treatment of women in that time. This makes the narrator inferior to her husband and males in general. The narrator is unable to be who she wants, do what she wants, and say what she wants without her husband’s permission. This causes the narrator to feel trapped and have no way out, except through the yellow wallpaper in the bedroom.

In the 19th century society was from different from what it is today. Women were not in the workforce, could not vote, or even have a say in anything. Women were not permitted to give evidence in court, nor, did they have the right to speak in public before an audience. When a woman married, her husband legally owned all she had (including her earnings, her clothes and jewelry, and her children). If he died, she was entitled to only a third of her husband’s estate. Charlotte Perkins Gilman wanted to change this. She wanted people to understand the plight of women in the 19th century. In her short story The Yellow Wallpaper she tries to convey this to the reader not just on a literal level, but through various symbols in the story. In The Yellow Wallpaper the author uses symbols to show restrictions on women, lack of public interaction, the struggle for equality, and the possibilities of the female sex during the 1800s.
Gilman shows through this theme that when one is forced to stay mentally inactive can only lead to mental self-destruction. The narrator is forced into a room and told to be passive, she is not allowed to have visitors, or write, or do much at all besides sleep. Her husband believes that a resting cure will rid her of her “slight hysterical tendency” (Gilman 478). Without the means to express herself or exercise her mind in anyway the narrator begins to delve deeper and deeper into her fantasies. The narrator begins to keep a secret journal, about which she states “And I know John would think it absurd. But I must say what I feel and think in some way - it is such a relief” (Gilman 483)! John tells his wife that she must control her imagination, lest it run away with her. In this way John has asserted full and complete dominance over his wife. The narrator, though an equal adult to her husband, is reduced to an infancy. In this state the narrator begins her slow descent into hysteria, for in her effort to understand herself she fully and completely loses herself.
