Evan Anton Professor Andrea Estepa Rough Draft The Gilded Age and the Labor Movement The Gilded Age took place during the last thirty years of the nineteenth century where unionization of workers would become more frequent. The reasoning behind the name of this era is due to the fact that everything seemed nice on the outside in America but in actuality corruption and inequality could be found underneath the surface. As the economy was changing during the industrial revolution workers began leaving rural areas and flooding to urban areas for the opportunities, such as working for the oil or steel industry. The development of steam engine railroads for transportation and increased development of factory manufacturing techniques, caused more A fire that was said to be caused from an unextinguished match or cigarette, set ablaze this highly flammable work environment. This tragedy brought attention to the unregulated/unsafe working conditions that the women who had lost their lives were experiencing. In response, the Ladies Waist-makers Union formed one of the world’s largest female strikes. This is an example of a successful strike that was effective in achieving higher wages and improved working conditions. This strike marked the significance of women workers organizing and achieving bargaining Pullman Palace Car Company made luxury railroad cars. The people who lived in the town of Pullman payed rent by deductions from their wages. The owner of the town and company George Pullman had workers’ wages get cut in addition to workers getting leadoff. Many people who worked for the company whose wages got cut had trouble affording the standard living costs in Pullman and were given “starvation wages.” The organization of the pissed off workers followed. The workers would go on a nationwide strike organized by the American Railway Union and was led by a man named Eugene debs. Eugene and his union was so powerful because they possessed the ability to paralyze the production of the railroad industry. George Pullman tried to hire people to break up the strike but ends up being unsuccessful. Federal troops were sent in and the court rules that workers must return back to work and the strike is ended. A more successful collective bargaining union was known as the American Federation of Labor (AFL) founded by Samuel Gompers in 1886. This organization focused on practical issues that involved craft unionization of skilled workers. The craft workers were successful in organizing because unlike the unskilled workers they could not be replaced easily. This union bargained for thing such as 8 hour work days, higher wages did not deal with social reforms. Women’s wages were not considered because the AFL dealt
The Pullman Strike was a disturbing event in Chicago, Illinois history. It occurred because of the way George Pullman, founder of the Pullman Palace Car Company treated his workers. George Pullman was born in 1831, in upstate New York, he was the son of a carpenter. He learned carpentry himself and moved to Chicago, Illinois in the 1850s. From there, he opened up his own railroad company called the Pullman Palace Car Company and it took off from there. During the Civil war he began creating a new kind of passenger car that would allow passengers to enjoy themselves. It was a new line of luxury railroad cars featuring comfortable seating, restaurants, and improved sleeping accommodations. Because low paid railroad workers, led by Eugene Debs, took a stand against George Pullman by boycotting and
“Industrial unions dominated the landscape of the late nineteen century U.S. labor movement.” They gathered all level workers together without discrimination of gender, race, or nationality. They declared the eight-hour workday for the first time when normal work time should be 12. Low wage of workers caused the “Great Strike of 1877”, which began with railroad workers in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. After the “Great Strike”, industrial union started to
The Transportation Revolution in the 1800s, sparked up industrialization and the building of railroads that stimulated every other industry causing an economic boom known as the Gilded Age. From the outside, America seemed like the place to go to make all your dreams come true. But in reality, in was an era of serious social problems mainly caused by an economy with a free market policy, low tariffs, low taxes, less spending, and a hands-off government. This type of economy would eventually lead to the development of monopolies. These monopolies would then, in turn, lead to worker uprisings ‒caused by the suppression of unions created mostly by unskilled workers‒ that would contribute to the rapid rise and downfall of America. An example of this suppression is the Homestead Strike of 1892; due to hostility created by the unions, the employer fired all the workers, and rehired them on the basis that there would not be any more unions. After the workers started working again, the conditions were still unbearable, so the workers shut down the facility. The police got involved, the workers were pushed back, and the facility was reopened union free.
They concentrated on higher wages, shorter hours, and personal issues of workers. The American Federation of Labor’s main weapon was walkouts and boycotts to get industries to succeed to better conditions and higher wages. By the early 1900’s, its membership was up to ½ million workers. Through the years since The Great Depression, labor unions were responsible for several benefits for employees. Workers have safer conditions, higher paying jobs to choose from, and better benefits negotiated for them by their collective bargaining unit.
The Gilded Age was known as the Second Industrial Revolution because there was change in the economy, politics, and society. Most of the change was occurring because of the growth of large companies. The in the 1900s up to the 1920s, the companies started to decrease in power but not all since Henry Ford was being successful because of his automobile company that allowed the people to move more, and think differently depending on their sexuality. Even though Ford was successful, the businesses still didn’t run the people anymore, the people started to control the government more.
The Pullman Strike of 1894 was the first national strike in American history and it came about during a period of unrest with labor unions and controversy regarding the role of government in business.5 The strike officially started when employees organized and went to their supervisors to ask for a lowered rent and were refused.5 The strike had many different causes. For example, workers wanted higher wages and fewer working hours, but the companies would not give it to them; and the workers wanted better, more affordable living quarters, but the companies would not offer that to them either. These different causes created an interesting and controversial end to the Pullman strike. Because of this, questions were raised about the strike that are still important today. Was striking a proper means of getting what the workers wanted? Were there better means of petitioning their grievances? Was government intervention constitutional? All these questions were raised by the Pullman Strike.
The exact period of time in which the Gilded Age occurred is ever-debatable, but most historians can at least agree that it started within the 20 years after the Civil War ended and lasted until the early 1920s. (West) The Gilded Age itself was characterized by the beginnings of corporations and corrupt political machines. Policies such as the General Incorporation Laws allowed business to grow larger more easily, and with less red tape involved. New technology allowed faster and more efficient production, but this explosive growth of industry called for not only more resources, but new business practices and leaders as well. (Moritz 10-12)
The Gilded age and the Progressive Era are time periods that played an important role in the development of the American society. The Gilded Age is a period of American history between 1870 and 1900. This term was coined by Mark Twain in the late 1800s. By this, he meant that this period was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath ("Learn About the Gilded Age"). The Gilded Age is well known for its political scandals and extravagant displays of wealth. At the same time, this was an era of major achievements in the industry and economy, which significantly changed life of American people. The Gilded Age was followed by the Progressive Era which lasted from the 1890s to the 1920s. Progressive Era is well known for its economical, political, social reforms and technological inventions. In my opinion, The Gilded Age had a more significant impact upon the United States than the Progressive Era because it gave rise to new industries, created transportation and communication networks which provided the infrastructure for further development of technology in the Progressive Era.
From the period between the 1870’s through the 1890’s, it became an era known as the Gilded Age. The term was characterized by a famous American Literature author named Mark Twain. The writer tried to point out that the term means that while on the outside society may seem perfect and in order, underneath there is poverty, crime, corruption, and many other issues between American society’s rich and poor. This era’s gild is thicker than the cheaper material it’s covering. This can be shown through the countless numbers of achievements and advances America has made during the period of reconstruction and expansion, industrialization, and foreign affairs.
In 1867, George Pullman founded a car company that grew rapidly fast. Twenty years went by and it turned into one of highly ranked railroad car company in the United States. Pullman town was then created for his workers, with specific rules and limitations. But when the gilded age started to take effect, Pullman continued to charge his workers twenty five percent more for rent compared to typical neighborhoods. Men and women struggled with low wages, industrial issues, racism, inequalities and unfair laws; it was a challenge to live. They did not receive enough pay to support people who had a family nor was worth the time and labor for the low income they received. Despite the discrepancy the workers and farmers faced dealing with inequality from the government and owners, the Pullman strike was successful in awakening americans to realize that labor issues are long overdue of reform. To gain political and economic power, industrialist, men and women formed collective groups
The Pullman Strike occurred began on May 11, 1894 as a result of how George Pullman President of Pullman Palace Car Company treated his workers. When economic depression hit in 1893 Pullman degreased his workers’ wages by 25 percent; however, he did not lower the price of rent in his town where many workers lived. Consequently the workers could not pay their rent, some faced starvation, and many fell into debt to the company. At first around 3,000 Pullman workers went on a “wildcat” strike, requesting support from American Railway Union (ARU). Before long 50,000 men stopped working and joined the strike. Asked to intercede Federal Troops went to Chicago, and after much violence the strike ceased. Holding a significant role in U.S history the
The time of the Gilded Age was another time of change for Americans. Many moved from farmland to cities. Railroads expanded, making it easier to travel and transport goods across the country. More women entered the workforce, causing child rate to decrease
Strikes had played a significant role during the Gilded Age ,and these were due to the worker being treated unfairly and standing up and fight for what they deserve. Different unions treated their workers differently, if the workers believed they were being treated just, then they would not go on strike and there would not be any conflicts. On the other hand, if the workers thought they were being treated unfairly then they would gain public attention and start a strike. Pullman hired people that were in need and a job, and this job would be their only chance achieving the American dream. They were put under harsh working conditions for sixteen hours a day (Pullman). A large portion of the workers were immigrants and freed slaves that were
The strike began as a lockout over the dispute of wages earned by employees at the Carnegie Steel Corporation. At the time of the strike, the employees wanted to bargain for better wages, but the company made one offer and then refused to bargain with the union. When the union and the workers turned down the offer, the company locked the doors and would not allow any union workers to return to work. Under the direction of Henry Frick, the company CEO, there was a wall built around the mill which was used to deny the workers access to the mill, and Pinkerton guards were dispatched to disperse the strikers from the town (History.com, 2014, para.
