The book I choose for my book assessment was The Wells Bequest, a companion to The Grimm Legacy, written by Polly Shulman. This book was pretty enjoyable because of it’s thrilling action and great imagery. Also, the characters were likeable because their personalities were amusing to read about. This novel is considered science fiction because the main plot is about events like time travel, parallel universes, futuristic technologies, etc. The element of time travel is specifically stressed throughout the novel. The plot is fiction set in a world different from ours where technologies and sciences are heavily involved. In the book, a boy named Leo finds himself propelled into a new crazy world where objects from various fictions are in fact …show more content…
real. Leo himself has to make it through time and space together with his friend Jaya on an epic adventure to stop a madman from changing the world. Science fiction by definition is fiction set in a world that differs from our everyday world in a way that importantly involves science or technology. In The Wells Bequest, Leo uses a time machine that is located in a special library to talk to characters such as Nikola Tesla in order to stop a man named Simon from ruining time. I’d say that while this situation is fictitious, it is fiction that importantly involves science or technology. Time travel itself is said to be possible only if you could possibly move faster than light which is not possible with the technology of today. However, while time travel does not appear to be possible, scientist could possibly make a breakthrough with the rapid evolution of technology to better understand the world. (Howell) After the big bang, the universe expanded at a speed multiple times the speed of light.
However, some particles expanded at a faster rate than others branching off in completely different groups in different directions. Our universe expands into a bubble shape and theoretically so would the other particles than branched off on their own. These rogue particles would’ve kept expanding just like the particles that make up our universe. So does that mean that somewhere there are tons of alternate universes different from ours in which certain laws of physics are not in place? This is the multiverse theory that is set in The Wells Bequest. It would explain why certain fictional items can exist in the book while it’s not possible at all in our universe. Because that world isn’t bound by the same laws of physics as ours. …show more content…
(Kramer) The Wells Bequest clearly displays many examples of technology far beyond us. Such as a machine to track anyone on earth with just at the input of a name and the press of a button or even the time machine used in The Time Machine by H.G Wells. These futuristic technologies all are common place in the book and can even be checked out at a public library meant for taking takings instead of books. This further suggests the alternate universe theory in place. Maybe in this timeline. technology evolved faster and more efficiently than it did in ours? Or perhaps there were certain key people that were present in that world that weren’t present in our world. (Wu) Whatever it is, the main character Leo is obviously is knowledgeable to these technologies and he uses these technologies to solve the conflict in the story. With the use of a time machine his problems were infinitely easier to solve. Or were they? Considering technology is vastly advanced who says the antagonist can’t also use futuristic technology to sway things in his own favor? In fact the antagonist did use futuristic technology to his advantage and Leo had to juggle with his opponent and his own problems. While The Wells Bequest is clearly fictional in most elements, there are many showings of science throughout the plot.
Things like time travel and parallel universes are prominent in the story. The characters Leo and Jaya both use the time machine to meet famous inventor Nikola Tesla to help solve a problem involving the fate of time itself. In the end they succeed over the madman successfully thwarting his plans. The Wells Bequest would probably appeal to many teenagers. It is recommended because it shows action well and that would keep readers interested. Also, it has great imagery. It allows the reader to clearly see a picture of the scene in their mind. The author also did an excellent job in showing each character's individual quirks. This makes it so that readers will genuinely attach to each character. Some things however could have been executed better. For example, the author took too long before getting to the main juice of the story. This led the reader to experience boredom before they could really get into the plot. As stated before, this novel is science fiction because it displays multiple events and attributes that are scientific in nature yet dance around with fictional
elements.
Fans of the novel enjoy the way Clark brings the characters to life, and the novel is just the thing for fans of urban fiction. Some found that the novel keeps the series going very well, and it makes them want more and more about these characters. These novels of Clark 's are page turners, that you will finish pretty quickly. Many cannot wait to get their hands on the next novel in the series. Some were kept on the edge of their seats with all that happens in the novel. Some noted, that unlike most women in urban fiction, these here are college
The novel that I read for this project was The Kill Order. This novel has many examples of accurate science found in it, which makes it perfect for this project. It is a novel that I would recommend to any avid science fiction reader.
I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. Several scenes pleasantly caught me off guard and some were extremely hilarious, namely, the visit to Martha Oldcrow. I found myself really fond of the char...
Over this entire novel, it is a good novel for children. It train children how to think logically, and notes people we should cherish our family, and people around us, very educate. Children can learn true is always been hide.
...ersonally, I fell in love with the book. Ray Bradbury has a more unique style in writing than most authors. I believe it is a very appropriate book for high school and I would recommend it to everyone. I think anyone and everyone can connect someway to the main themes of the novel. Everyone has or will undergo a stage in life where they don’t feel accepted. Then it is up to that person to chose how they decided to take it. In the book some characters decided to fight the evil and found themselves doing so. People get so caught up in what people think when really they should just accept themselves, “Accept everything about yourself -- I mean everything, you are you and that is the beginning and the end -- no apologies, no regrets” (Clark Moustakas). This book could show that no matter the age or who you are anything is possible and not even the sky is the limit.
After reading the opening chapters, I was surprised by the laid back, casual attitude Foster displayed. He did not go about explaining certain aspects of previously written novels in a way that was hard to understand. Foster explained things in great deal, but in good taste. He did not go on with boring information; he simply got his point across in a way that made me want to know more. Not only was his way of thinking and expressing his thoughts interesting, but the subjects he tapped into were interesting also. Foster connected things that surround our average day lives to literature, and the effect it brings to the literature. For example, Foster discusses vampires in on of the first few chapters. The majority of people have seen numerous movies about vampires, making it easy to connect with what he was talking about. His overall tone and strategy of writing was relatable and the least bit overwhelming, which quickly grabbed my attention and made me interested in things I would not normally be interested in.
Despite numerous cultural and technological advancements, life in modern America continues to bear resemblance to the Anglo-Saxon world. Although it may take time and some loss of pride to admit it, since characteristics of human nature have stayed the same, from work place to personal relationships, the similarities between the two worlds are uncanny.
...related to every generation with its life lessons. The novel can also be understood and therefore enjoyed by people of any age. The novel will stand the test of time and will become a classic.
Altogether, this is a book to be read thoughtfully and more than once. It is about an unusually sensitive and intelligent boy; but, then, are not all boys unusual and worthy of understanding? If they are bewildered at the complexity of modern life, unsure of themselves, shocked by the spectacle of perversity and evil around them - are not adults equally shocked by the knowledge that even children cannot escape this contact and awareness? & nbsp;
For the Science Reader project, I read Black Holes, Wormholes, and Time Machines by Jim Al-Khalili. Interested in time travel and the secrets of space, I chose this book with hopes of better understanding our universe.
In summary, one will find this book to be an exciting read. There was an original plot, a female lead, and character development to appeal to all types of readers. After reading this science fiction novel, one will know to keep their friends close and their enemies closer.
This is an odd little book, but a very important one nonetheless. The story it tells is something like an extended parablethe style is plain, the characters are nearly stick figures, the story itself is contrived. And yet ... and yet, the story is powerful, distressing, even heartbreaking because the historical trend it describes is powerful, distressing, even heartbreaking.
Have you ever had your only friend sabotage you and steal everything that you are? Have you ever watched your dad take his death spill from his horse knowing you can’t save him? Perhaps your first companion, friend, and makeshift mother suddenly disappear from your world and a few days after you learn she is dead? Maybe you were born to be queen, but instead, you’re shipped to another land, betrothed to a prince you don’t even know. I hope not. But Crown Princess Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee aka Ani has, and there are plenty of rough waves in front of her. If you have ever read the Grimm Fairy Tales the story it may seem familiar, and it should be. The whole entire book was based on the tale. But even so, the tale still leaves some unanswered
During the late Victorian Britain, H.G. Wells became a literary spokesperson for liberal optimism and social reform. His scientific knowledge and literary capabilities led him to be one of the fore fathers of modern science fiction. In his novel The Time Machine, Wells, knowledgeable on the teachings of Charles Darwin and those of the Fabian Society, attempts to warn society that the brutality of capitalism and the plight of the laborer are not dealt with through social reforms then humanity will drive itself to extinction.
...ould be a part of required reading lists for high school students because it introduces them to concepts like logic and feelings, levels of maturity, and the brevity of life that allow students to find their true calling. This novel will teach them to develop the skills they need to make conscious decisions, whether they base them on logic or they go with their hearts as well as developing the right level of maturity they need to succeed in the real world. Students need to be able to reflect on matters that will be meaningful regarding the decisions they will have to make in the future so that they are knowledgeable about their choices.
