A parent also plays a part of authority of how much they can control their kids. The authority figure can be influenced by culture. For example chinese culture is known for respect for authority, devotion to parents and high achievement. The children are expected to obey their parents and put their family first posterity. In some culture parents use physical punishment for achieving their goals and many parents in America has adapted to the authoritative parenting style. “In many traditional cultures, parents learn how to parent from their elders. In the U.S., parents are more likely to rely on the opinions of experts”.The values and children's plays an important role on how they share the values with their children. In other culture kids carry “babies, haul water, hrd goats and collect firewood. The kids learn the real life express rather than sitting in a classroom. The culture of raising children and using the style of parenting is different than other countries. According to the book “ our views of childhood is critically warped by a very recent economic affluence that allows most of our kids the luxury of play, school and little responsibility”(Small 5,6). Ahas their own style and some has multiple steps too. There are four major styles authoritative, neglectful, permissive and authoritarian. Each style has its characteristics that brings a different reaction in children. Also the ar multi terroir but I will contract on Baumrind and Maccoby and Martin they expanded from Baumrind. Maccoby and Martin expanded on the theory of parenting They expanded by using Baumrind’s theory of permissive and Neglectful parenting. In this paper I will be explaining all the different parenting styles, compares them from one another, exampling Baumrind theories. I will also explained parenting style can be affected by culture, and each style can bring a different outcome. The four states authoritative It has higher demands and their are less responsive towards their kids. Authoritative pap renting being involved in their kids lives. They Put efforts ensuring to have a positive relationship with their child. Growing up, two group of people, parents, and grandparents, took the time and the energy to raise me. Both of them had different approaches when raising me. These approaches were different parenting styles. According to Baumrind, parenting style was the “[capturing] normal variations in parents’ attempts to control and socialize their children” (Darling, 1999). To put it simply, parenting style goal was to lecture, influence, and discipline a child. In general, there are four parenting styles with their own specific benefits and disadvantages. Furthermore, parenting style, granted the dynamic of the family was understood, can be identified in families.
Cultural Differences in Child Development Expectations ABSTRACT -------- A small research has been carried in order to find out how different cultural backgrounds can influence a child’s developmental expectations in adults and the consequences of these expectations. The design of the method was a replication of Hess et al., 1980, study, applied into two mothers with early age daughters, coming from two different cultural backgrounds, English and Spanish. They answered at what age they thought different statements about child development would be reached by their children and being these statements about grouped into 6 main developmental areas the averages were calculated and compared. The results showed an earlier expectation of achievement in all areas of development, except for independence, in the English participant and a complete opposite position of the Spanish participant expecting a late development of the child in general.
The article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” by Amy Chua demonstrates the two different mind sets of parenting: Chinese parenting and Western approach to parenting. In my view, Chinese parenting is very strict about school work and extracurricular activities such as pianos and violins. For example, if we compare the two different sets of parenting; Chua says, for instance that Western parents believe that they are strict by forcing their kids practice their instruments for 30 minutes a day at most to an hour. This is nothing compared to the Chinese parents that would say the first hour of practice is easy it’s the second or third hour that gets tough (Chua 2011). This shows how forcefully strict the Chinese parents are compared to Western parents. The Chinese parents would say anything that really has to be said to their kid’s straight forward, but the Westerns would go about telling their kids, so it won’t hurt their feelings or their self-esteem. A few of these examples come to show that Chinese parents have intelligent kids, but are they intelligent enough for society? In other words are these Chinese children capable to work in group projects compared to an American kid that lives the usually life as a kid; like going to sleepovers and participating in different school activities. This is what David Brooks actually discusses about in his article “Amy Chua Is a Wimp”, says that Amy Chua’s way of parenting which is Chinese parenting isn’t effective enough. Well sure their kids are very intelligent and get high grades, but can they participate in well-functioning groups? One thing that Chinese parenting lacks in is a skill set that is not taught formally, but is imparted through strenuous experiences. This is exactly what Chua...
Parenting styles refer to a set of different manners in which parents raise their children. There are four parenting styles including authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. The authoritarian parenting style is based on the implementation of rules, and on the idea that all rules should be followed without exceptions. Similarly, authoritative parenting style implements rules, but the child feelings are taken in consideration and reasonable exceptions to the rule are allowed. On the other hand, in permissive parenting style, there is implementation of rules, but they are rarely encouraged to be followed. Lastly, in uninvolved parenting style, there is a lack of engagement between parents and children, and there are
To begin with, of the four Baumrind’s parenting styles, authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and disengaged, I chose authoritative. Authoritative parenting has a high level of demandingness while at the same time exerts the same amount of responsiveness leading to a child who is independent, creative, well-balanced, and leads a relatively social lifestyle. I feel that laying down rules and expectations for a child gives them the guidance they need at a young age or they will be left to guide themselves blindly leading to irresponsibility, impulsiveness, and a tendency to engage in substance use. Equally important is a parent needs to warm, attentive, and not only say they love their children but express through actions and understanding as well (Arnett, 2016).
Within the realm of Communication and Parenting, it is apparent that most researches will refer to three main parenting styles: permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative parenting. Permissive parenting is described as a style in which parents exert minimal psychological control combined with high levels of affection. Authoritarian styles differ from this greatly, as it is defined as parenting with many demands and few expressions of affection. Authoritative parenting can be described as a balance of permissive and authoritarian styles. Authoritative parents have high expectations for their children, and they are able to effectively share ideals of love and respect. The essay “The Role of Parenting Styles in Children's Problem Behavior,”
The last effective parenting style is Police Officer which is authoritarian. Authoritative parents tend to be stricter and more consistent than authoritarian parents. The children of authoritarian parents believe that children by nature are strong minded. This kind of parenting style sets strict, rigid rules and punishment such as spanking. The child does not have much freedom and have no saying. Parents are there but only step in when you break a rule to discipline. Obedience is strictly enforce in this kind of parenting
It can be said for most parents that they want their children to grow up to be successful contributing members of society. Being a parent is a difficult, yet rewarding task. But why do some types of parenting result in juvenile delinquency while others find success. There are four generally recognized parenting styles and are categorized: authoritarian, permissive, neglectful, and authoritative. This essay will break down the various styles, its type(s) of discipline and effectiveness.
Parenting styles have been widely defined by Baumrind into three categories, authoritative, authoritarian and permissive. Parenting styles can be defined as a pattern of attitudes in how parents choose to express and communicate with their children. These styles are categorized based on the level of nurturance, parental control and level of responsiveness (Dwairy, 2004). Authoritative style exhibits high levels of demand, responsiveness and nurturance; authoritarian style exhibits high levels of demand but low levels of responsiveness, permissive style exhibits low levels of demand but high in responsiveness and nurturance (Dwairy, 2004). These parenting styles have been proposed to have a significant impact on a child’s development as well as academic achievement and psychological well-being. Children reared by authoritative parents are stated to have the highest levels of academic achievement, self-esteem, emotional adjustment and well-being according to Baumrind’s category of styles (Dwairy, 2004). However, these three categories are based on Western samples and have been said to describe parenting styles mainly in the West and question its limitations in describing parenting across cultures, as each style’s defining patterns may have different meanings across cultures.
The first type of parenting style is called authoritarian. In this parenting style the parents are the boss. They make strict rules and they enforce them. They focus more on restrictions than a loving relationship with their child. They believe it is their job as parents to catch their children being bad and punish them. These parents use external control on their children instead of taking time to tell the kid what they did wrong and why they should not do it again. Something these parents do not realize is that they do not catch their kids being good. Authoritarian parents are firm and unsympathetic. Authoritarian parents love to use discipline.
The universality versus cultural specificity debate both have aspects that make sense and can be applied to childhood development. On one side, supporters of the argument for the universality of parenting suggest that certain types of parenting styles will produce the same child development outcomes in different cultures. On the other hand, the argument for cultural specificity states that different parenting practices vary from culture to culture, and that culture ultimately determines the outcomes of child development. Each culture has specific styles of parenting that instill values on children particular to that culture. Each individual has characteristics of what their parents taught them, which gives every individual their own personality. Both sides present logical information on the cultural impacts of parenting on child development outcomes.
With over three hundred million Americans and over six billion people worldwide parenting skills are essential to maintain a healthy society. Parenting involves many aspects and requires many skills. It is a time to nurture, instruct, and correct to develop fundamental skills children will need to be mature, responsible, and contributing adults to a society. There are four commonly identified parenting styles; authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. Of the four parenting styles, two remain on opposite ends of the parenting spectrum. These two styles; authoritarian, and permissive both have deleterious results that are often visible throughout different developmental stages, such as rebellious behavior. As well each style has its own advantages such as; acceptance by peers with commonality. Child rearing for most parents is an evolving set of skills. It could be said that, with any style of parenting, there is no explicit set of rules for every situation, and what works for one child may not be effective for another.
Each different parenting style each comes with pros and cons. In regards to parenting, there is never a wrong or right answer because every child and circumstances are different when it comes to the importance of the positive and negative effects. But each style comes with its effects on children. A few pros about Authoritarian parents are that their...
To be more specific, authoritarian parents are close to their children because they usually get involved in their child’s every activity. According to Amy Chua, the author of “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”, she claims that, “Chinese parents spend approximately 10 times as long every day drilling academic activities with their children.” Chua’s point is that Chinese parents are likely to spend time with their kids to make sure that their kids are doing well and safe. For example, when kids have assignments from school, helicopter parents would help with their kids’ homework. Some strict parents may not teach their kids’ homework, but they would force or push their kids to do homework by keeping an eye on them. In this way, raising children by forcing and controlling them also makes children more successful in their academic skills because children would develop a sense of
Well first off to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the parenting styles between the Harsh-Hearts and the Easy-Goings, their styles of child rearing must be categorized first. Child-rearing are combinations of parenting behaviors that occur over a wide range of situations. There are four different categories of combinations in child-rearing: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. After studying these two different cases, it can be declared that Mr. and Mrs. Harsh- Heart use an authoritarian child-rearing approach while the Easy- Goings use the authoritative child-rearing style. Authoritarian child-rearing is “low in acceptance and involvement, however high in coercive control, and low in autonomy granting.” (Laura 216)Authoritarian parents have a lot of punishment and usually resort in spanking for discipline. The parents are the boss, there are rules, its tyrannical, there’s structure, and the parents are directive. Meanwhile on the other hand, authoritative is the complete opposite and it is said to be the most successful approach. Authoritative child-rearing “involves high acceptance and involvement, ad...
