"In the South, there are higher rates of marriage and higher rates of divorce for men and women. There's a moral crisis in red states that's produced by higher divorce rates and the disparity between parental values and behavior of young adults,"(CNN).There’s a great number of marriages and divorces in the South.Author and activist, Alice Walker was born and lived in south her whole life. Walkers takes part of the statistic in the divorce marriage rate. The Way Forward Is Through A Broken Heart is an autobiography that includes short stories and the life of Alice Walker’s the failure of marriage, the understanding of people, and the different forms of ism that happens during the civil rights time era.

Including racism, and womanism/feminism. The time of the novel sets back to when the Civil Rights Movement started. In this book women aren't treated equally because of their gender.“Black women are being murdered in Boston, Massachusetts. White women are being murdered in California. Native American women are being murdered in New Mexico. Hispanic women are being murdered in New York. Chicana women are being murdered in Texas. All of us are being attacked because we are woman, and no one really cares about us but us” (Walker 149). As an activist Alice Walker talks about womanism in several different writings including this one. this one talks about all women of color being murdered in different areas of the United States. They're being attacked because they're women in a “male-dominated” world. When it comes to the different forms of ism, Alice Walker is very educated on that topic. “Walker has been an activist all of her adult life, and believes that learning to extend the range of our compassion is activity and work available to all. She is a staunch defender not only of human rights, but of the rights of all living beings”(“Alice Walker”).Alice Walker has been an activist her whole life. She educates her readers about discriminations we see in the world such as the one she talks about in this novel racism colorism sexism classism and feminism.
