Samuel Morse was born on April 27, 1791 in America. His father was a Calvinist preacher. When Morse was young he went to Yale University to study philosophy and mathematics. In 1811 Samuel traveled to England to study painting. While he was there he became a skilled artist. One hobby Morse had was creating helpful inventions. He became so interested in his inventions that he put off painting, which was his life long carer, to work on them. One thing he wanted to accomplish was to be able to send messages over long distances at lighting speed. First I want to say that I was a little hesitant in choosing this book. The saying that “you can’t judge a book by its cover” certainly holds true for this book. When seeing the size of the book, I thought that there was no way I would be able to read this book in ten days. The cover shows what I thought was a hot air balloon. The first connection I made with the book were from the images on the cover. I visualized images of Wizard of Oz before I even opened to the first page. As I read the book and viewed its spectacular illustrations, I became mesmerized by its story and found it hard to put the book down. I read the book in less than three nights. . While reading this book, I found myself describing what I was seeing in the pictures with my wife. She joined in to tell her part of the story. This made reading the book fun. My wife thought I was insane for actually reading it aloud to her. It turned out to be our own interactive read aloud between the two of us. This made for great practice for what I learned through class videos and experiences.

John Hancock was born on January 23, 1727 in Braintree, Mass. He is the son of John Hancock and Mary Hawke. John Hancock (father) was a Harvard graduate and minister. They lived in a part of town which eventually became the city known as Quincy, Mass. where John Hancock became the childhood friend of John Adams. In 1742, Hancock’s father died and he was adopted by his uncle, Thomas Hancock. Thomas Hancock lived in Hancock Manor in Boston where he had no children and he was a successful privateer and a merchant. John enrolled in Harvard University, received a bachelors degree, after graduating form Boston Latin School in 1750. After graduating from Harvard he worked for his uncle and he was trained for eventually partnership. From 1760 to 1761, he lived in England. He was building relationship with customers and suppliers of his uncle’s shipbuilding business. In January 1763, Thomas Hancock made John his full partner of his business. Since his uncle was sick, he took over the business. A year later, in August, Thomas Hancock dies of illness. He took full control of the business and became one of the wealthiest in America. At first John Hancock did well. His ship sailed across the Atlantic Ocean with good for the people of London. His ships sailed back with god to sell the colonies. Many colonies needed and bought the goods made in England, the mother country. John Hancock made a lot of money. He was generous, too. He gave food and firewood to the poor in the winter. He also gave a lot of money to the churches of Boston. Many people liked John Hancock because he was a kind man. (Lee, 3-11)
Fulton went to a strict Quaker school and got in trouble often. A classmate of his gave him a paint shells because of how good of a painter he was. Fulton began to make signs for the local tradesman this began his interest in painting and designs. Fulton was always creative even since he was a kid. On April in 1775, he submitted designs to the gunsmiths shop and ended up designing the air gun. Fulton’s family was poor.
Robert Fulton invented the first submersible submarine. This new invention put Fulton’s steamboat ideas on hold. The submarine was for the fast growing British Navy. The British Navy needed an underwater device that could swim under enemy ships and set off explosives. Fulton was American and this invention would make him a celebrity back in the states. Fulton was the head of a 5-10 man team who was inventing this new machine. Fultons main partner was a man named Robert Livingston. Livingston obtained a license for these new machine. Samuel Adams was born in 1722. As a young boy, he lived with his parents near the Boston Harbor, and could see the ships through the observatory at the home. Boston, being the largest town in North America, was always bustling with merchants, tradesmen, and a general hubbub of people milling about. Adams could see the commercial ships, filled to the mast with wheat and other imported luxuries on a daily basis. Near the harbor, there were also shipyards, filled with carpenters, rope makers, and caulkers. These muscle men helped shape the ships which were used to help our economy boom.
Burrhus Frederic Skinner was born in a small town called Susquehanna, Pennsylvania on March 20, 1904. His dad was a lawyer and his mom was a house wife. Skinner was the typical boy, he enjoyed playing outside and to build things. He created many inventions as a kid. He and a friend made a cabin in the woods and Skinner created a cart with backwards steering. When working for a shoe store he thought of and invention that helped the broom pick up dust. Skinner also invented a flotation system for a door to door business that would sell berries. The flotation system separated the ripe berries from the bad. Skinner also enjoyed school very much. He even dedicated a book later in life to his English teacher Miss Graves. Skinner did not have a tragic childhood it was fairly easy. The only tragedy was that younger brother died at sixteen from a cerebral aneurysm.

World War I was first called "the Great War" because of the number of lives lost (Coetzee 11). There were approximately nine million deaths over the course of the four years the war lasted (11). World War I began because of the assassination of "Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne" (17). Tensions were high and war seemed the only solution (17). The alliances in Europe were well formed by the time 1914 arrived (17). "The Central Powers" were "Germany and Austria-Hungary" (Westwell 8). "The Triple Entente" were "Britain, France, and Russia" (8). All of the countries and citizens believed in the cause of the war from the very beginning (9). That enthusiasm would quickly change once the introduction of new weapons and strategies were revealed (9). Every country involved was seeking ways to improve on the resources they needed to fight, and hopefully win the war. None of the countries involved wanted the other side to have a military advantage over the other (7). World War I had technological inventions such as machine guns, poison gas, tanks and submarines, which changed the strategy of war. The outcome of these inventions resulted in more death and destruction than previous wars.

John Locke was born on August 29, 1632, into a middle class family during late Renaissance England. Locke started his studies at Christ Church in Oxford. He then went into medical studies and received a medical license, which he practiced under Anthony Cooper. They became friends, and when Cooper became Earl of Shaftesbury, Locke was able to hold minor government jobs and became involved in politics. Shaftesbury steered Locke towards the views of a government whose law was fair to all, and all were under the law.

John Locke, born on Aug. 29, 1632, in Somerset, England, was an English philosopher and political theorist. Locke was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, where he followed the traditional classical curriculum and then turned to the study of medicine and science, receiving a medical degree, but his interest in philosophy was reawakened by the study of Descartes. He then joined the household of Anthony Ashley Cooper, later the earl of Shaftesbury, as a personal physician at first, becoming a close friend and advisor. Shaftesbury secured for Locke a series of minor government appointments. In 1669, in one of his official capacities, Locke wrote a constitution for the proprietors of the Carolina Colony in North America, but it was never put into effect. In 1671 Locke began to write his greatest work, the Essay Concerning Human Understanding, which took nearly twenty years to complete since he was deeply engaged in Shaftesbury's political affairs. In 1675, after the liberal Shaftesbury had fallen from favor, Locke went to France. In 1679 he returned to England, but in view of his opposition to the Roman Catholicism favored by the English monarchy at that time, he soon found it expedient to return to the Continent. From 1683 to 1688 he lived in Holland, and following the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and the restoration of Protestantism to favor, Locke returned once more to England. The new king, William III, appointed Locke to the Board of Trade in 1696, a position from which he resigned because of ill health in 1700. He died in Oates on October 28, 1704.
