“One of the things the government can 't do is run anything. The only things our government runs are the post office and the railroads, and both of them are bankrupt.” These are the words of Lee Iacocca, and although Iacocca was sarcastic about the power of the government, what about the post office (post office quotes)? Is the fine, dandy, and efficient post office we had back in the 1800s still apart of our world today? According to PSB.Org the Post office is on it’s way to complete deterioration (Lee). The United States Post Office in our society today is not the one we used to know, the USPS’s demand of paper mail has declined, they cannot flourish in a dwindling economy, and they have cases flowing in complaining of unwanted mail.
In June 1788 the Constitution was ratified, in which gave congress the right to establish the Post Office, and post roads, as seen in Article I, Section 8, Clause 7. The Post Office was expanded and continued until a year later in September of 1789 when President George Washington, directed the first Postmaster General, Samuel Osgood (The Constitution and the Post Office). By this time there were seventy-five Post Offices and over 2000 miles post roads in which already existed. The congressional discussion at the time was where the roads and offices should be placed within the states. Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe were unsure if congress had the power to establish post offices, but Justice Joseph Story affirmed in his Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States that congress had this power considering the phrase “to establish” displays the means to create and likewise designate roads. Once the roads and offices are constructed they are subject to the laws of the s...

If you would have asked me my personal opinion on the post office before I completed it I would have been on board with the folks trying to fight for it’s life. Although the United States post office is a historical monument in America, it is really no longer needed. With the amount of money it is losing, the amount of trees it is destroying, and how quickly technology is advancing I believe it is truly hurting our world more than it is helping it. There are local offices and businesses that are capable of sending out our mail just as productively as the government run office. I am in favor of saving trees, more than I am for keeping something around that has been here for hundreds of years. In eliminating the United States Post Office our world would benefit environmentally, economically, as well as financially.
During and after the turmoil of the American Revolution, the people of America, both the rich and the poor, the powerful and the meek, strove to create a new system of government that would guide them during their unsure beginning. This first structure was called the Articles of Confederation, but it was ineffective, restricted, and weak. It was decided to create a new structure to guide the country. However, before a new constitution could be agreed upon, many aspects of life in America would have to be considered. The foremost apprehensions many Americans had concerning this new federal system included fear of the government limiting or endangering their inalienable rights, concern that the government’s power would be unbalanced, both within
On 9 February President Roosevelt ended all government air mail contracts with airlines and ordered the Army to fly the mails. Roosevelt took this measure to deprive commercial airlines of scandalously high financial arrangements, but his plans failed because of the Army Air Corps' inability to handle the job. After the ...
While the government of the United States owes its existence to the contents and careful thought behind the Constitution, some attention must be given to the contributions of a series of essays called the Federalist Papers towards this same institution. Espousing the virtues of equal representation, these documents also promote the ideals of competent representation for the populace and were instrumental in addressing opposition to the ratification of the Constitution during the fledgling years of the United States. With further reflection, the Federalists, as these essays are called, may in turn owe their existence, in terms of their intellectual underpinnings, to the writings of the philosopher and teacher, Aristotle.
According to document 1, the stamp act was being destroyed would restore America's liberty. The stamp act was the first direct tax in colonial history, and was created to help pay for the British troops stationed in the colonies. The taxing made colonists angry because now
The U.S. Postal Service is one of the largest organizations in the world. In fiscal 2005, it had nearly 705,000 career employees and handled about 211 million pieces of mail through an extremely complicated system of carefully coordinated activities (United States Postal Service Annual report, 2005).
As soon as Andrew Jackson came into office, he fired 10% of the government’s employees, mainly from the post office, and placed his own supporters into the vacated posts. This may not have been a problem if he replaced these workers with people who were qualified, but the vast majority of Andrew Jackson’s appointments were incompetent. Thus, the government became bloated and less efficient. Andrew Jackson development of a special system to reward his cronies with government jobs without formal training, demonstrates that Andrew Jackson should be remembered as
There were many petitions, repeals, and attempts to try to cooperate with the british but they were not successful. One example is the Oliver Branch petition, this was supposed to resolve differences with the British without starting war. The plain truth was supposed to improve the colonists’ relationship with the British. After many protests from the colonists the British repealed the stamp act but this still did not decrease the tension enough to stop the
James Madison was no stranger to opposition. In publishing an essay referred to today as Federalist Essay No. 10, Madison participated in a persuasive attempt to ratify the Constitution, a document he drafted and for which he is credited as its “Father”. Along with John Jay, who became the United States’ first Supreme Court Chief Justice, and Alexander Hamilton, who became the first Secretary of the Treasury, Madison articulates in his writing the necessity of the Constitution as a remedy for the extant ills of an infant nation recently freed from the grasp of distant monarchical rule. This young nation faltered under the first endeavor of organized government, the Articles of Confederation. The Articles were designed during a period of emerging
To start, the Stamp Act was a tax on the American colonies by the British Parliament. This act was formed in order to raise revenue to pay the costs of governing and protecting the American colonies. This act was supported by Britain’s Chancellor of the treasury department, George Greenville. Paul Gilje points out that, “Since Great Britain had accumulated a debt over £135 million the British first minister, George Greenville, thought it only appropriate that the colonies contribute to their own defense. Maintaining an army in North America would cost about £200,000 per year” (Gilje, Paul A). This act required stamps to be put on all legal and commercial documents such as licenses, liquor permits, newspapers, almanacs, advertisements, papers that were issued in the colonies and various articles like dice and playing cards. Colonists could not participate in any business without the stamped paper. Gilje also explains that, “Anyone interested in any transaction—whether it was buying a ...
Moving paper from the printer to the envelope does nothing to add value to business. It costs both time and money. Postage, printing and personnel costs keep increasing and adding to bottom line. Twenty years ago, there was the promise of “ The Paperless Office" and it is a promise that will probably never come to fruition. Since the mid-1980’s, paper clutter has expanded exponentially on the average desk. (http://www.FutureTechConsulting.com/) Not on original Reference Pg.
Whereas the six functions of government, as articulated in the Preamble remain the same, the functions have extended to govern issues not a factor during the 18th century. However, the primary function of the government to maintain order has remained unchanged. Demonstrated through various avenues, these functions are open to interpretation. Throughout time, the government continuously adapted itself to provide various services and regulations to the public that it views as beneficial for the public good. Such services have grown to include food standards, consumer protection, health, and education among others. Examples of governmental function expansion since ratification of the constitution can be seen in the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Energy, FEMA, and much more. Through FEMA, the federal government provides disaster relief funding to help communities struck by floods and tornadoes and other natural disasters. The Department of Agriculture put out the food pyramid, which helped people develop a healthy diet. The Department of Energy provides funding for research on wind energy. Clearly, food pyramids and wind energies were ...
I enjoyed reading your post this week. It is a good choice to analyze and evaluate USPS. At first, I love this federal service. They work properly. The USPS has technologically improved itself year by year that its history speaks itself that is “In the more than two centuries since Benjamin Franklin was appointed our first Postmaster General in 1775, the Postal Service™ has grown and changed with America, boldly embracing new technologies to better serve a growing population” (USPS, About). Through the years, USPS tried to serve well enough with some competition with some other private postal services in the US, and so USPS picked some days as significant to compete in this rivalry field.

Four visible weaknesses of the articles, apart from those of organization, made it impossible for Congress to execute its constitutional duties. These were analyzed in numbers 15-22 of The FEDERALIST, the political essays in which Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay argued the case for the U.S. CONSTITUTION of 1787. The first weakness was that Congress could legislate only for states, not for individuals; because of this it could not enforce legislation. Second, Congress had no power to tax. Instead, it was to assess its expenses and divide those among the states on the basis of the value of land. States were then to tax their own citizens to raise the money for these expenses and turn the proceeds over to Congress. They could not be forced to do so, and in practice they rarely met their obligations. Third, Congress lacked the power to control commerce--without its power to conduct foreign relations was not necessary, since most treaties except those of peace were concerned mainly with trade.
Most importantly, it saves lives. We should all learn the importance of recycling. For example, some sea lions won?t get stuck in plastics if we recycle. We would also breathe better air. We can recycle and aluminum can and put it back on the shelf for something useful. If we just leave it in the landfill, it?ll decompose and it?ll be of no use. It?ll also reduce pollution or else it?ll make a new one.
