Oppression Through the Writings of George Orwell and Peter Weir. The 1984 novel by George Orwell and the movie The Truman Show by Peter Weir both explore stories of surveillance and oppression. In both stories, we see a similar story of surveillance and control, which are both told differently. 1984 takes place in a city run by a totalitarian government that monitors each person's daily life and uses the likes of technology and propaganda to strike fear into its citizens. In 1984 we follow the path of Winston Smith who wants to rebel against the party(the government).On the other hand, The Truman Show follows the story of Truman Burbank and his rebellion against his occupation. Truman Burbank is also known as the main star of The Truman Show, which is just a show about his day-to-day life. The idea of privacy is not nonexistent for Truman, even though he may believe he has privacy every minute of his life is recorded and broadcast for the world to see. Many have tried to sneak onto the show and tell Truman the lie he lives. None succeeded until a woman named Sylvia, who was only an extra on the show. She falls in love with Truman and in their final moments with each other, she tells Truman the lie he lives and essentially is the enzyme that starts the chain reaction of Truman's discovery of the world he lives in.‘ Listen to me. Everybody knows about you, too. Everybody knows everything you do. They're pretending, Truman.’(Weir)This is the moment in Truman's life when he starts to take a step back and look at where he lives. Everything in Seahaven revolves around him and no matter how many times he tries to leave, they do something to stop him. This ultimately results in him trying to escape the world of lies he is in.
