The Trent Affair was a problem of international affairs in which the U.S. Navy captured two confederate diplomats who were traveling on a British ship. The British government protested because of this and the people were released because the northerners didn't want to involve Britain in the civil war and didn't want to fight with them. The Trent Affair took place from November to December of the year 1861. When the crisis erupted the captain of the USS San Jacinto was ordering the arrest of two confederate envoys sailing to Europe aboard a British mail ship without the British’s knowledge. The name of the ship they were aboard was called the Trent. in 1861 and lasted four years. The British claimed the seizure of a neutral ship by the U.S.
Navy was violating international law. When the Trent Affair ended President Abraham Lincoln’s administration released the envoys and averted an armed conflict with Britain. On the eighth of November, 1861, Confederate diplomatic envoys James Madison (1798-1871) of Virginia and John Slidell (1793-1871) of Louisiana were aboard the Trent, a British mail steamer, sailing through the Bahama Channel (between the Bahamas and Cuba), when the vessel was intercepted by the USS San Jacinto, captained by Charles Wilkes (1798-1877). Mason and Slidell and their secretaries, who were headed to England and France for recognition of the Confederacy. The politicians were arrested, transported to Boston and thrown into prison at Fort Warren. The Trent was allowed to continue its journey after the men were taken into custody. In America, Northerners Praised Captain Wilkes for actions. However, the British were furious when they heard that the Trent was intercepted. The word of interception reached London in late November. The British had not taken sides in the Civil War and they took payment from anyone willing to pay to travel aboard their
ships. The British government sent a message to the American government demanding the releases of Mason and Slidell. Also the British also wanted an apology for the transgression of British rights on the high seas. When the American government discarded Britain’s demands then Britain started to prepare for war, by banning exports of war materials to America and sending troops to Canada. The plan that Britain came up with was to attack the American fleet that was blocking the South. The British also planned a blockade of Northern ports. At the same time, France announced It would fight alongside Britain in a conflict with America. In December, Lord Lyons, the British minister to the United States, met with William Seward (1801-1872) the Secretary of state on the fate of Mason and Slidell. Lyons took a hard-line during the meeting, and afterward wrote to Lord Russell, the British foreign minister: “I am so concerned that unless we give our friends here a good lesson this time, we shall have the same trouble with them again very soon. Surrender or war will have a very good effect on them.” President Lincoln and his administration got the message- “one war at a time,” Lincoln then said and decided not to push the issue on December 27th, Seward sent a message to Britain officials in which he disavowed the actions of Captain Wilkes and announced that the envoys would be released. Armed conflict with Great Britain was averted. After being released in January 1862 Mason and Slidell traveled to Europe but their mission ultimately was a failure due to not being able to convince European Leaders into support for the south in the civil war.
The French King and Queen were killed and France declared a Republic. The XYZ affair was a diplomatic issue between France and United States. It was one of the important events during Adams’ presidency. The background information, who was involved, and the solution and problems caused by the XYZ affair was quite fascinating. The XYZ affair was the best event to ever happen in the 1700s.
In June of 1797 the relationship between France and the United States worsened. Jay's Treaty of 1795 angered France, who was at war with Britain and recognized the treaty as support of an Anglo-American alliance. Almost 300 American ships bound for British were seized by France. Marshall finally accepted a national appointment from President John Adams as one of the three representatives to France to negotiate peace. He accepted because he was concerned about the controversy. However, when Marshall and the other representatives arrived in France, the French refused to negotiate unless the United States paid massive bribes.
The causes of the war and reasons for fighting parallel each other. The primary cause of the Civil War was the issue regarding slavery. The issue of slavery is brought up several times throughout the book. Arthur Fremantle, the British observer, believed that the South was fighting to protect slavery and their way of life. Colonel Chamberlain also mentioned slavery as a reason for the war and stated that he found it to be appalling. Despite racism and prejudice in the North, many northerners still believed that the slaves should be freed. They saw the institution of slavery as contradictory to the Bible and civilized society. Colonel Chamberlain mentioned that he was fighting for the “dignity of man” (pg. 27). The South was feeling pressure from anti-slavery and abolitionist groups in the North. The South felt that the North was trying to destroy the southern way of life. The North on the other hand, had become more successful in industry and didn’t seem to understand the importance of slavery in the South. The South’s entire society and social structure was based on slavery and they were not willing to end the entire system. The South argued that slaves had their place at...
The Civil War in the United States from 1861 to 1865 serves as a dark reminder of how disjointed a nation can become over issues that persistently cause heated debate among party factions. Most students that have taken courses in American history understand the disadvantage possessed by the Confederate States of America as they fought against the powerful Union army for what they perceived as a necessary institution of slavery. Historians have debated over the effectiveness of the blockade and if it was important in creating the failures faced by the Confederate States of America. This debate has generated the contested question of “Did the Union blockade succeed in the American Civil War?” The blockade, whether considered a success or an absolute failure on the part of the Union, holds grand significance in the history of the United States. The increased development in the Union’s naval department correlates directly with the necessity of possessing ships that could withstand the threat of blockade running.
The Trent Affair was the diplomatic crisis that potentially brought Great Britain and the United States closest to war during the first year of the American Civil War. Although war seemed possible, both sides managed to avoid an armed conflict, and in the process gained greater confidence in one another.
In Tim Seibles' poem, The Case, he reviews the problematic situations of how white people are naturally born with an unfair privilege. Throughout the poem, he goes into detail about how colored people become uncomfortable when they realize that their skin color is different. Not only does it affect them in an everyday aspect, but also in emotional ways as well. He starts off with stating how white people are beautiful and continues on with how people enjoy their presence. Then he transitions into how people of color actually feel when they encounter a white person. After, he ends with the accusation of the white people in today's world that are still racist and hateful towards people of color.
One of the main causes of the war was Great Britains's continued practice of impressment. The ocean was a common and affective way to transport good in order to trade with other nations. Every country has the right to use the ocean; but because Britain was causing America's rights to be restricted by capturing American ships and enslaving their seamen, it caused many problems between the two countries. Document 1 is a congressional report that describes Britain's violations of our right " to use the ocean, which is the common and scknowledged highway of nations, for the purposes of transporting, in their own vessels , the products of their own soil and the acquisitions of their own industry." The report calls Britain's impressment and seizure of ships is a
This war would impact how the United States saw slavery. It is the deadliest war that the United States has ever seen in its history. It all began with the secession of South Carolina. After this, an understanding was established between the authorities in Washington and the members of Congress from South Carolina. They both agreed that the forts, Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter, would not be attacked, or seized as an act of war, until proper negotiations for their cession to the state.
The southerners (south carolina) nullified the act and threatened to secede from the union. The Tariff of Abominations was the tax on raw goods which was meant to help the north. This angers the south and south carolina threatens to leave the USA. VP Calcoun says to nullify the tariff and Jackson says NO!!! We will use military force.
The Peggy Eaton affair was an American Scandal in the 1830’s that involves members of the cabinet and their wives. Peggy was the wife to the Secretary of War John H. Eaton. Rumors were that they had an affair with Eaton way before her husband had passed on and he used to be away at sea for extended periods of time. After they had got married, the wives of the other cabinet members felt that she was not worth being part of the political, social status as they said she was loose and gave sexual favors to several men outside marriage. President Andrew Jackson had just lost his wife due to a political scandal based on rumors as well and defended the Eaton’s. He had to sustain his honor and felt that cabinet members who could not control and lead their wives and families were not fit for their jobs. Van Buren gave the solution that all cabinet members had to resign to finalize the dispute. Jackson seconded him and asked them all to resign.
The South, knowing their disadvantage in numbers, made the call for commerce raiding of northern ships. The southern government encouraged privateering of northern ships. This privateering would help take the burden of building up the Navy off the government, since privately owned ships and sailors would be assisting the Confederate war goals.
Iran-contra affair is the name of a major United States foreign policy scandal in the 1980's. It involved two secret operations by the executive branch of the government. The operations were (1) the sale of military equipment to Iran, an enemy of the United States; and (2) the provision of military aid to contra rebels in Nicaragua, which Congress had banned. The two operations were connected by the use of profits from the Iranian arms sales to aid the contra rebels.
Late in the war, 1778, was the point of Britain being close to defeat. Current commander of British forces was Lt. General Henry Clinton trying to stop this rebellion. He was thinking on how to do this with the North of America under Patriot control. Clinton then decided on turning to the South of the United States (www.theamericanrevolutiong.org). Fighting was becoming heavy between the militia and the United Kingdom’s forces (www.theamericanrevolution.org). However, General Clinton had once been to the South of the U.S. before, but failed in taking a key city (Charleston, South Carolina) by sea on June 28, 1776 (www.theamericanrevolution.org).
The Secession of the United States was the cause of thr Civil War. The Southern Confederates were furious that the Northern Union for trying to abolish slavery. When Lincoln was elected president, he tried to once and for all abolish slavery in the North as well as the west. He tried to contain slavery to its geographical area to keep it from spreading anymore north, but the South erupted in rebellion and eventually went to war against the North in the Civil
The Sharpstown scandal, was simply a stock fraud scandal that occurred in 1971 associated with higher ups in the state government. A banker named Frank Sharp basically set up a way for himself and other legislative member to con and dishonestly make a lot of money. Sharp would grant loans to state officials, so that they would buy into his banks stock, it would then be resold for a high margin of profit. The scheme originally has success creating a quarter of a million dollars. The success didn’t last long though, the SEC filed civil and criminal charges against many of the perpetrators involved in the scheme including the former states attorney general. In the middle of everything was the “dirty thirty”, thirty members who banded together
