According to Webster’s Dictionary a miracle is “an unusual or wonderful event that is believed to be caused by the power of God”. There are one hundred and twenty-four miracles recorded in the bible. As a child I learned about the miracle of God saving Noah and his family from the worldwide flood by having them build an ark. I also learned about the supernatural conception of Isaac by his very elderly parents Sarah and Abraham. God used the miracle of locusts covering all of Egypt by the power of Moses stretching out his rod as a punishment. God used the parting of the Red Sea at just the right moment to let the Israelites pass through on dry ground then it closed to violently consume the Egyptian Army that was chasing them. This is part of the three steps of the Messiah Prophecy; they are the Resurrection of the dead, the last Judgement and Final establishment of the Kingdom of God. The Promise of his Second Coming is told to us in Acts 1:9-11 “And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven”. In his book, Ordinary Resurrections: Children in the Years of Hope, Jonathan Kozol pulls back the veil and provides readers with a glimpse of the harsh conditions and unrelenting hope that exists in a community located in the South Bronx called Mott Haven. Mr. Kozol provides his own socially conscious and very informative view of the issues facing the children and educators in this poverty ravaged neighborhood. Just his commentary would paint a very bleak picture of the future. It is the words of the children that give this book optimism and meaning. The courage and care exhibited by the volunteers of St. Ann's after school program and the creativity of the teachers at P.S. 30 are utterly inspiring. So why does the existence of miracles have any meaning at all? Belief in miracles helps to bring a sense of the divine existence of God to those who believe in a material way. Miracles are a way for signs from God to be transferred to mankind, in a way that we are able to understand. These miracles or signs from God can help to show divine favour, and to support our moral beliefs and ideology, to let us know that we are on the path of righteousness for those who believe. But what then, constitutes a miracle? A miracle, according to Hume, is a violation of the laws of nature, something that cannot happen, but does. (Hume, 1777,E10.12) I believe that Hume believes that the the laws of nature, cannot ever be violated, for if one believes that this is possible, then the laws of nature are fallible and belief in the laws of nature which should be unalterable, would no longer apply. It is therefore, far more reasonable to believe that the laws of nature, which have proven themselves over and over again, are in fact to be believed and accepted over any possiblity for the existence of a miracle.
At the Rapture, we, the believers, will meet Jesus in the air. During the Rapture, Jesus will call for all of the believers who have died, give them glorified bodies, and take them from the Earth along with all of the believers who are still alive. The apostle Paul describes the ordering of this snatching away event in 1Thessalonians 4:16-17 NIV, "For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first. After that, we who are alive and left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And we shall be with the Lord forever." Paul goes on to further describe the timing of this sequential, rapturous event in 1Corinthians 15:51–52 NIV as being instantaneous, "Listen, I tell you a mystery: we will not all sleep, but we will be changed in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed." Unlike other views that believe the second coming will be in two phases, amillennialists feel it will occur in one stage; within the time between the first and second coming (459). They fuse the two resurrections spoken in Revelation 20:1-6 into one stage. In this one stage, a general resurrection will occur in which all believers and unbelievers will be gathered. They understand that Satan will be bound during the in-between time and at the second advent he will be released for a short time to cause havoc (458). Similar to the definitions above the philosopher Hume (1711-1776) offered his own definition, that miracles are “a transgression of a law of nature by a particular volition of the deity” and Hume adds that a miracle could be defined as a “break in the natural order of events in the material world”. For the most part Hume puts forward that miracles are ‘impossible’ and that testimony to miracles should never be trusted. This can be seen in Hume’s first reason against the existence of miracles. He states that there has never been anyone attesting a miracle “of such unquestioned good-sense, education and learning, as to secure us against all delusion in themselves” and persuade us that a violation of a natural law is possible. Faith and imagination is all about truth and the belief in a higher power beyond man himself. Faith and imagination binds the power of God’s existence. As with most other Pauline attributed documents, 1 Corinthians is believed to be a single document that addresses salient topics and rationalizes Paul’s view of faithfulness to Christ with Corinth citizens. Paul’s assurance of resurrection illustrates a concern for Corinth as he admonishes their disbelief in resurrection of the dead with a series of explanations as to why such doubt would render the faith of Christ “in vain”. Given the context of the time, Paul’s correspondence with Corinth clearly had an original intent of educating and admonishing Corinth on their views on resurrection. In this paper, I will examine Jesus’ resurrection from the dead because, according to many scholars, there is no other event in the life of Jesus that is as significant. In order to better comprehend the magnitude of this event, I will begin by looking at what can be discerned from the Resurrection of Jesus.
