Theorists such as Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Erik Erikson, Sigmund Freud, and Lawrence Kohlberg have studied and documented information about the stages of childhood development. The three main stages of childhood development are early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence. Each stage contains developmental behaviors and characteristics of different age groups. However, the childhood development stage that this paper is focus on is the middle childhood stage. During this phase in a child’s life, they go through a variety of changes. Such changes include; physical, cognitive, social and emotional changes. According to this course text, HDEV (2010), middle childhood comprises children between the ages of 6 to 12 years. Jean Piaget theorizes that children go through four different stages in cognitive development; sensorimotor stage, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. He states that by age 7, a child belongs to the concrete operational stage. At this time they begin to think logically like adults do, moving away from abstract thoughts to concrete thoughts. Additionally, children acquire the skill of reversibility. For example, adding 6 and 3 gives you 9. A child in the concrete operational stage would know that since 6 and gives you 9, then subtracted from 9 would give you 6 or 6 subtracted from 9 would give you 3. Therefore, they are able to show flexibility. Children are also aware of persons having different perspectives. Whereas, children are less self-centered and are open to other viewpoints. Here they are able to focus on more than one aspect of given object or situation (decentration). At the age of 6 years old, a child would most likely experienced the school system which would include pre-school and kindergarten. There are many physical, cognitive and social changes that are happening in middle childhood development. This paper will examine what these changes affect the child’s ability to function in society. This analysis will focus on the normal course of development in middle childhood as it applies to the theorist Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages and then give examples of what may happen if the developments are not carried out.
The child’s development is determined by biological maturation and interaction with the environment. Although all children go through each stage in the same order, there are individual differences in the rate at which children progress through stages, and some may never go through the later steps. Each stage of development reflects an increasing sophistication of children’s thought. The first stage is the Sensorimotor stage. This stage ranges from birth to two years of age and can be broken down to six substages. The main objective of this stage is goal-directed behavior and object permanence. Goal-directed behavior combines several schemes and coordinates them to perform a single act to solve a problem. Object permanence is the realization to form a mental schema of an object that is not present but exists. The Preoperational Stage is the second stage and ranges from age two to seven. During this stage children increase their ability to think symbolically, as well as increase the use of concepts, centration, conservation,and intuitive thought emerge , and thinking remains egocentric. The third stage is the Concrete Operational change. Occurring between ages seven and twelve. Piaget proposed that cognitive development from infant to young adult occurs in four universal and consecutive stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operations, and formal operations (Woolfolk, A., 2004). Between the ages of zero and two years of age, the child is in the sensorimotor stage. It is during this stage the child experiences his or her own world through the senses and through movement. During the latter part of the sensorimotor stage, the child develops object permanence, which is an understanding that an object exists even if it is not within the field of vision (Woolfolk, A., 2004). The child also begins to understand that his or her actions could cause another action, for example, kicking a mobile to make the mobile move. This is an example of goal-directed behavior. Children in the sensorimotor stage can reverse actions, but cannot yet reverse thinking (Woolfolk, A., 2004).

As a developmental psychologist, it is imperative as a professional to provide specific guidelines for the healthy development of infants, children, and adults as they encounter the four main stages of life. These four phases, beginning with pregnancy and birth, leading to infancy and childhood, adolescence, and ending with adulthood, will be discussed in correlation with specific strategies suggested for maintaining a standard rate of growth in an individual as it relates to each particular stage.
Piaget believed that language development is associated with cognitive development or one’s own thought processes. Children ages 2-7 years old classify in Piaget’s preoperational cognitive stage. In this stage children use their well-developed ability to symbolize events or objects that are absent. Although children can represent the absent objects, they do not permit the child to think about the reversible cost of actions. According to Piaget, comprehending at this stage is based on appearances rather than main beliefs (Gray, 1991). For instance, one child playing with a ball of play dough may say they have less than the child playing with a flat piece of play dough simply because it is shaped differently. Also during the preoperational stage children are able to expand their vocabulary from 3,000 words to 8,000 words. Their sentences grow in length and complexity. They commonly use grammatically correct sentences and learn the basics of writing and reading (Cooter & Reutzel, 2008).
Piaget saw cognitive development as an adaptive process. They gradually learn more about their environment and adapt. Children go through four stages. The preoperational stage is the second stage, and children go through this stage between the ages of two to seven. Children's representational thought grows in this stage, but they have problems with logic. The concrete operational stage is the third stage, and children go through this stage between the ages of seven to 11. Children's thought is more like an adult, and they are much more logical.
Piaget believed that children in this stage experience two kinds of phenomena: pretend play and Egocentrism. Pretend play is the ability to perform mental operations using symbols. Egocentrism is the inability to perceive things from a different point of view. For example, a child covering his own eyes, because he believes that if he can’t see someone, then they can’t see him as well. When a child is seven to eleven years old, it is in the concrete operational stage. At this point, Piaget believed that children are able to grasp the concept of conservation. Conservation is the principle that mass and volume remain the same despite the change in forms of objects. For example, children at this age are mentally capable of pouring a liquid in different types of containers. Piaget also believed that at this age a child is capable of understanding different mathematical transformations. At the age of 12, children reach the Formal Operation stage, the final stage in Piaget’s stages of Cognitive Development. This is the

Piaget worked in the 1920s, where he had to develop French versions of questions on English intelligence tests. Previous research shows that Piaget became interested with the reasons that children had the wrong answers, (McLeod, S. 2010) and he believed that these answers showed the different thinking process of adults and children. Before Piaget put together his stages, it was thought that adults were able to think more than children. But, after his work he realized that children’s thought processes were much different than adults (McLeod, 2010). Piaget has four major stages of Cognitive Development. I will be giving specific examples to help me distinguish between the thinking patterns of 3-year-old preschooler and a 9-year-old student using Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. The biggest difference between the 3 year old and 9 year old is that the 3 year old is in the pre-operational stage and the 9 year old is in the concrete operational stage.
During Kindergarten, the child is in Piaget’s preoperational stage. This stage last from ages 2-7 years. Throughout this stage, the child is not able to see things from anyone else’s perspective but their own. The child has a lack of conservation and is unable to understand that if a substance is rearranged it is still the same amount. Irreversibility is also present and the child does not understand that certain processes can be undone. The child has the inability to reason about transformations and focuses primarily on static situations. The child strongly believes in single classification and does not understand that one entity can hold two or more positions. The child has transductive reasoning and combines unrelated facts together to obtain their own belief.

The sensorimotor stage begins from birth to about age two. This stage explains how the infant uses their senses and mobility skills to physically understand the world around them. By the child’s first year of life, they’ve developed imitation skills, coordination skills, and broaden their curiosity to objects, their bodies and their environment. Object permanence is the milestone of this stage. It’s the awareness and understanding that the object they viewed will continue to exist even if they aren’t able to see, hear or touch it.

During middle childhood, children experience many changes that influence their role in society and more importantly, who they are as individuals. With this in mind, Erik Erikson developed an extended sequence of eight stages of psychosocial developments for individuals to undergo throughout life.
