Debate Nurses must be able to express themselves effective to advocate for their patients. Nurses have a unique perspective on issues that need to be considered and heard during times of decision making. Incorporating debate into nursing education allows nursing students a chance to practice communication and critical thinking skills. As a nurse, there have been many times that I have had scary hard discussions with physicians while advocating for my patient. Debate “involves the construction of logical arguments and require the recognition of assumptions and evidence and use of inductive and deductive reasoning skills” (Phillips, 2016, p. 247).
Theoretical Foundation The theoretical foundation for debate is based on social constructivism which is part of the cognitive learning theory (Braungart, Braungart, & Gramet, 2017). The use of debate in nursing education helps students develop these important skills. Debate allows students to “examine issues in depth, consider contrasting viewpoints and defend a position” (Hartin et al., 2017, p. 118). In nursing education, debate is an effective tool used to “foster the type of creative, intelligent, thoughtful and forward-thinking nurses needed in the modern healthcare system” (Hartin et al., 2017, p. 118).
Debate is one tool to promote a student-centered learning environment. Students learn more by being actively involved in the learning process rather than passively obtaining information through lecture (Doody& Condon, 2012). “Debates help to stimulate critical thinking by shaking students free from established opinions and helping them to appreciate the complexities involved in practice” (Doody& Condon, 2012, p.
