Antigone For this paper we had to read and write about the play Antigone written by Sophocles. This play is about a tragedy between a family who do not agree on the same thing, which in the end hurts everyone. With that being said I wanted to make my paper around the theme of Justice. Justice is represented in this play very well, because the characters in this play have different views on justice. This play has two main characters, Antigone and Creon. Both believed that they are right and are doing the right thing, when it comes to the burial of Polynices. No matter what day and age a burial should be something important, thus I will also be talking about how important a burial is to the Greeks. Correspondingly since Polynices was her brother it was her personal duty to at least give him a proper burial. Antigone is a strong women who could fight her own battles alone, even if she tried to get her sister to help her. Not only did she think that going against Creon’s law was the right thing to do but she knew that a proper burial was the requirements of the Gods. “I must please those below a longer time than people here for I shall lie there forever”, she said in line 75. (Thomas Pg.25) What she said is true because when one dies and is buried, there would be no one else but the ones below. Antigone sure makes a strong point of what she thinks is justice for her brother’s corpse. In line 459 Antigone tells Creon, “Because it wasn’t Zeus who pronounced these things to me, nor did Justice, companion of the Gods Below, establish such laws for humanity.” (Thomas pg. 29) By reading this story and knowing about the Greek history one could say that a burial were very important for the Greeks. They thought that if someone denied a burial to the dead, they would end up insulting the body and that person’s soul. (Thomas 67) For the Greeks women did not have much of a role but when it came to a burial women did play an important role. In the story Tiresias also told Creon that he polluted the Gods and made them angry because he left out Polynices to be eaten by the birds and dogs. (Thomas pg.51) The Greeks believed that good or bad once dead everyone should receive a burial. In line 1033 Tiresias told Creon, “Yield to the dead, don’t kick a fallen man!
