Equality; the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities. Ayn Rand the author of Anthem made her society, so that everyone was equal no one referred to themselves as an individual. Everyone was one with everyone. The view her book takes on equality is different from how we view equality to be . The society that her characters live in no one is better than the other. But Equality, the main character of this story brings the story to life because of how different he is from everyone else in the society. He thinks, sees, and even looks different from everyone in his society. Equality, does not feel like he belongs at first in the story, but as the story goes on he learns that him being different might not be such …show more content…
a bad thing after all. He learns new things he never knew had existed before, he was a visionary that the society would not accept.
The society saw anyone who was different from the rest as rebels. Everyone is to think the same, act the same, and look the same. There was no room for people who were different in this society. The best way to find meaning in one’s life is through through individualism. Equality, had a hard time fitting in has a kid. He had felt like was different from the other kids. He was taller than the other kids and felt the the classwork that they had received in class was extremely easy. He would try to work slow to make try and make himself seem normal to his teachers. Equality, looked at himself as evil because of how the society made him feel about himself. He had dark thoughts, that he thought made him different from his brothers. He would chant this statement in his head to make sure he got rid of these dark thoughts that he …show more content…
had, “ ‘We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever”’ (Rand 19). These were engraved on the Palace of the World Council to remind the society that they were all one. This statement was written after the Great Rebirth. No one was to speak of the time before the Great Rebirth that is called the Unmentionable Times, they might be jailed if they were to speak about it. Equality, knew he should obey the rules, yet he found himself thinking about the world, how it was made, and all these other things that were forbidden. He wanted to know about the plants, the sky, and the water. He knew it was bad for him to think about these things. He wanted to be apart of the Council of Scholars, so he could learn about all these things. His dreams were crushed when the Council said, ‘ “Street Sweeper.” ’ (Rand 26). That was the job title that Equality had received. He knew that he could not pity himself because it was forbidden to think about yourself, so he had thank the Council for job and accepted his fate. He still felt curious about the world he lived in, even after moving into the House of the Sweepers. Equality, had a lot of brilliant ideas racing in his head.
He and some of his fellow Sweeper found a place where they could bring their ideas to life. It was a tunnel under the society that the Council did not know about. Equality, would sneak out at night when the city was asleep. He would time himself to make sure he got back before the sun came up. This method had worked well for awhile, until one night when he got too caught up in one of his projects. He had been arrested because he would not tell the Council where he had been. Equality, was stubborn and unwilling to comply with the Council. He knew if he had told them where he really was the might destroy his innovations and inventions. They might even destroy the tunnel. He had waited for the day that the Council of Scholars had arrived to break free from his jail cell to get his invention and show them how he could change they way of life in the society for the better. He was disappointed to see how the Council had reacted to his invention. In Equality’s eyes, he saw this as stupidity. He could not believe they would reject his idea which would be helping the society. The Council had threatened Equality by saying, “ ‘ You shall be burned at the stake’ “ and “ ‘ No, they shall be lashed’ “ (Rand 72). The Council was outrage that Equality was boasting about the work he had done, and also they were angry because he had broken the society’s laws. Equality knew he was in danger and the only thing he could do now was
run away from the society. Equality feels free for the first time in his life, when he had finally reached the Uncharted Forest. The forest is a place the society saw as evil, so they had never went inside the forest for anything. There were a few people who had ran away from the society before and seeked safety in the forest. The forest had symbols hope for those who were like Equality and could not survived in a society that made all the decision for its people. Equality had felt self gratification upon entering the forest. He saw this opportunity in the forest as a time to find that meaning that he’s been searching for his whole life. He met a girl who he chose to name the Golden One, even though he knew it was sin to give men their own name to distinguish them from the other man. He had met her while doing his job at the end of the city where the farmland where located. They had share this connection even though they had never spoken to each other. She had followed Equality in the forest, when she had heard he had ran away. He was happy to see her. They had no idea what had awaited them, but they were willing to see what had waited Equality had found out what made an individual. He found the letter “I” and how important that one letter was. He and the Golden One had began to find themselves piece by piece when
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a world where everyone was forced to be exactly alike? Well in Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem she directly confronts this topic through the main character named Equality 7-2521. Equality 7-2521 faces challenges directly relating to the issue that the government has been trying to address for many years. Equality 7-2521 is not like his brothers, he is smarter, wiser and even taller, therefore, his brothers think that he has “evil in his bones” (Rand 18). The book Anthem is the firsthand account of how Equality 7-2521 finds the word “I” amongst the word “We”. He does not agree with these rules that the government has put into place, these are the rules that held him back for a time, but in the end, pushed him forward to be his own person.
light to his society as they believed that what's done individually but not collectively cannot be
In the book Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 had never seen his physical appearance. He was surprised to see such a strong individual staring at him. One day after escaping into the woods, he finally met himself at a flowing stream and gained new confidence. This was an essential part of the theme of "Anthem." This shows how Equality finally found himself as an "I" in order to help others see themselves as an "I." This is an important part of "Anthem" since it reveals Equality 7-2521's determination, bravery, and development as a person.
Equality 7-2521 aspires to be a self-proclaimed individual. In the novella, Anthem, Ayn Rand discusses of a dystopian society in which every man and women are set equal to each other. Equality is damned by the World Council after a discovery of light and electricity, and a contradictory belief in individualism. Freedom is an essential factor in the happiness of man. Equality is scorned for his different looks, mental competence, and independent beliefs but laughs when he recognizes that he should be glorified for understanding that his perception of life leads to contentment.
Many people seem to get entangled into society's customs. In the novel Anthem, the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, lives a period of his life as a follower. However, Equality eventually, tries to distant himself from his society. He is shaped to be a follower, but eventually emerges in to an individual and a leader. On his journey, he discovers the past remains of his community. Ayn Rand uses Equality's discoveries of self to represent the importance of individuality in a functional society.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand is a classic novel about a man who struggles through life to try and show the positives about a life unknown, unlike the dark and wicked society that he lives in. It shows what collectivism can do to a society and how a community can not flourish without individual identities. Equality is shown as a extremely intelligent young man with great potential to the future of the society, but the Council of Vocations seems him in a different light. Looked down upon by everyone, Equality 7-2521 was given the job of Street Sweeper to make him equal to his fellow brothers and to erase any individuality he obtained.
In the novel, Anthem, written by Ayn Rand takes place when mankind has entered another dark age. A man named Equality 7-2521 lives in a society where he struggles to live equal within the brotherhood. In the world he lives in people are told they exist only for the sake of serving society, and have no other purpose. Therefore, each individual is assigned a vocation as a permanent life career which determines who they socialize and live with. However, Equality being very different from his brothers, believes in individualism and rejects the collectivism society around him. The concept of individualism vs collectivism is portrayed in the story because individuality is unknown to the people where no one is unique or excellent in any way. The people
Equality deserves the right to be motivated in his own way, and the people in the world today would or would not benefit from being motivated in all the same ways. Firstly, the main character was creating electricity to finally be added into the House of Scholars. Next, he deserves the right to be motivated in this way because he is his own person. Finally, in today’s world if everyone was motivated in the same way we would not be our own person anymore. In conclusion, every man has his own
At the start of Anthem, Equality is a collectivist who knows there is something wrong with the world he lives in. This allows him to evolve into an individualist. Equality says , “It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own” (Rand 17). Equality admits he has committed a transgression and hopes to be forgiven. Equality, at this moment, is living to the standards of others because he lives in a society where no man is to think differently than another. This contradicts Rand’s philosophy because she says that a man is entitled to his own happiness and that you are in charge of it, but since Equality is living to the rules of his society, he cannot find his own happiness, for he is almost forbidden to do so. Likewise, it states in the text, “I owe nothing to my brothers, nor do I gather debts from them. I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others. I covet no man’s soul, nor is my soul theirs to covet” (Rand 96). Equality realizes that he is not to live nor commit himself to the standards of others. He has come to the understanding, as Ayn Rand says in her interview, “That he cannot demand that others give up their lives to make him happy, nor should he wish to sacrifice himself for the happiness of others.” Equality finds his own happiness because he has found himself, and he has learned that he cannot put his happiness in the hands of others nor put the happiness of others in his own hands. This allowed him to find himself, and to find
Ayn Rand, a contentious woman, the new favorite author to multiple people’s list. People who have read her magnificent book, Anthem, understand how exquisite and meaningful her words are. Books like Anthem are worth reading because it gives the reader more knowledge about controversial topics and it takes the reader to experience new places and new adventures. Equality, the main character, is a symbol. He represents many people today, living in countries like his society. Equality has to find his true identity first before helping the others. People are not allowed to believe in individualism, they should not have a identity of their own. Each person has a monotone routine to follow every single day of their lives. Each step a person takes
Equality 7-2521 embodies this essential idea throughout the story because of his eternal struggle with not quite being able to conform to society’s expectations. He is physically different from the others (Rand, 1946, p. 2) as well as mentally different as he disagreed with others even as a child (p. 4) and was smarter than the rest (p. 5), and this mental sharpness is carried into adulthood as he is able to discern the feelings of oppression and fear that weigh over all men in this time (Rand, 1946, p. 30). Rather than acting as a machine, he feels preferences and desires within himself. Equality 7-2521 enjoys science, dreams of being a Scholar, likes a pretty girl, and wonders about himself. Since these things are not shared by all, they are forbidden, and despite how simple they may be, they define
Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand, in which Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, struggles for self-identification living in a collectivist society. Equality believes that individuality is an eminent aspect of one’s life because individuality defines and outlines who man is. He endures all the hardships in his life living with people who support collectivism, and who reject his ideas. For example, when Equality 7-2521 invents and exhibits the light bulb, the World Council rejects it and tells him that it is selfish to work on something alone instead of working with his brothers. The World Council threatens to destroy the light bulb but Equality does not let that happen and rebels, so he is forced into exile from his society. Equality realizes that he is different from others because he cares about his happiness unlike others who are convinced to believe that a group’s happiness counts more than an individual’s happiness.
People in every Society are placed in categories according to gender, religion, race, and age from which one of these categories include social class. In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, people are placed in social classes according to the government 's liking and instead of race, age, gender etc their social class depends on the job they are given by the government. This was done to treat everyone equally in order to keep peace in the society. However, sometimes equality can cause rebellion and this idea is portrayed through the protagonist of the novel, Equality 7-2521.
Ayn Rand's Anthem shows us her view of our world united under what seems to be communist rule. For example their view of right and wrong; which Anthem portrays is a system of very strict rules which mainly make sure that everyone is involved in a collective role within the society in this system no one is considered an individual or that they can even think as an individual.
Why do these rules exist, what is their purpose. The council wants to protect the people. The council doesn’t want the people finding out about what happened in the unmentionable times. But are they doing the right thing by keeping it a secret? Equality is stuck trying to figure out what to do and discovering new things and envisioning his new society.
