The Theme Of Death, Trust, And Parental Love In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy

For my paper I have chosen to write about topic number one. My focus on this book is going to be narrowed down to three main themes that are evident throughout the whole book that helps characterize and shape the two main character, and that is Death, Trust, and Parental love in the book The road by Cormac McCarthy. My working thesis is as follows:
McCarthy made it very obvious throughout the whole book the theme of Parental love between the father and son, trust between the other survivors, and also the theme of death. The wife of the nameless father stated in the beginning of the book, “the boy was all that stood between him and death"(McCarthy 25). The man's urges to kill himself was fueled by the love he had for his son, and how much love the son had for him.
The first theme I’m going to discuss is trust. Issues of trust are mainly shown through the conflicts they have when they meet other survivors. The father really hesitates to help any random people out in fear of them turning on the father and son. No matter how bad the people they run into are, the father immediately refuses to help them even when the son begs him. For example when they run into the person said to be Ely, the father says “I don’t think he should have anything.” He feels the only way to survive is to be selfish and only take care of and worry about himself and his son. If he allows himself to trust others, he runs the risk of harm to himself and his son. He does not want to do anything that will risk their lives. This leads me to my next topic, death.
I instantly noticed Death from the beginning of the book. The Father expected his own death after the apocalypse because the survivors turned on each other and turned to cannibalism, rape, theft, and murd...

Unlike the scavengers who survived by resorting to murder, thievery, and cannibalism, the father chose humanity, kindness, and empathy. He chose to scavenge and refrain from harming others unless it is necessary to survive.
As the man stated on page 77 in the book “my job is to protect you. I was appointed by God to do that. I will kill anyone who touches you.” This book is filled with violence and crazy people and scary situations, but the father and son get through it all together up until the end. These three themes of trust, death, and parental love to me are what get the main characters to survive it all. Their love, their relationship, and how it is only the two of them through it all makes the book more rare and precious.
