Divergent by Veronica Roth Tris lives in a city where they are separated into factions. Now that Tris is entering adulthood, she must choose a faction, which happens to be other than her home faction. In this book Tris learns what true bravery is, how to be selfless, to love, and to care for those around her. The big idea bravery is portrayed throughout the entire book. One complex lesson that the story proposes is that bravery is the ability to be confident in you and your decisions, as well as standing up for those you love, even if it may work against you. However, most importantly bravery is not just being brave for yourself, but helping those around you; being selfless. That is what bravery truly is. Firstly, in the beginning of the book bravery is the ability to be confident in you and your decisions. For example, this scene helps to prove that bravery can lead to second guessing yourself. On page 75 it illustrates Tris contemplating whether she can go home or not. This scene shows the theme bravery because Tris convinces herself that she does not need to go back home. Reading the first paragraph of this scene, I notice that Tries yet again second guesses herself. An example of this is when she was wanting to go home. On page 300 it shows Tris referring to herself as another person, “...but if I saw her, I wouldn’t recognize her.” I think this ties into the theme of bravery because she realizes that the old Tris is gone. I’m thinking that Tris feels she can’t be her old “wimpy” forgiving self. I think she feels she needs to stand up for herself and not be so easy to forgive. Because of that, I think that Tris wants to refer to her old self as not a part of her anymore. I’m thinking this is because she doesn't want to be weak anymore and the best way for her to do that is to forget her
