Food systems have impacted locals living in small communities as well as larger populations on a global scale. There is more to a food system than meets the eye. Food systems are often accompanied by a multiplicity of effects that impact a society on a social, economic or demographic scale. The environment, society, and available resources all share a vital relationship within the interaction of a working food system. Each step of a food system is affected by demographic and environmental factors, which impacts society in an economical and social way. Before a producer prices or creates a product, he or she must think of how much it is going to cost to make that item and how much they will be able to produce. People living in arid, semi-arid, coastal areas, or small islands are affected by climate change. Hare stresses that those who are vulnerable to climate change, will experience struggles in the distribution process and well-being of society every time that a natural disaster occurs.
For example, the recent flooding in Texas put a damper on the food system's role in the economy and social well-being. This was due to the demographic location of the state. During this disaster, “seven of the twenty-one food banks in the Feeding Texas network were affected by the storm” (Hester). The main problem stemming from the issue was that the food systems lacked support in having a supply ready for a natural disaster. The warehouses were quickly depleted of food and resources.
After the flood, people in Texas began devising more ways to improve their food system in case of another natural disaster were to occur. Factors such as the packaging that takes place in warehouses needed to be improved. People realized how damaging an event like this was towards a food system. In order for us to maintain our lives, we need to consume food to supply nutrient-needs for our bodies. As the global population increased, the demand for food also increased. Increased population led to mass production of foods. However, even with this mass production, in under-developed countries, people are still undernourished. On other hand, in developed and developing countries, people are overfed and suffering from obesity. In addition, the current methods of industrial farming destroy the environment. These problems raised a question to our global food system. Will it be able to sustain our increasing global population and the earth? With this question in my mind, I decided to investigate the sustainability of our current global food system.
I had the opportunity to pick several different cites to complete our volunteer assignment. In the course of completing the hours, some of them I did on my own and others where done with few students. As new nurses, it is essential that we interact and be involved within our communities. I believe being involved in one’s community is important and will help make us aware of the different cultures and subcultures that surround us. Not only with this will help give us a better understanding about people in our community, but will also make us more compassionate, knowledgeable, and prepared for differences that we may or may not have experienced during our everyday lives.
In the study of world history, historians examine and retell the development of the human race and its structures over time through different eras. What is often overlooked by the masses is the very item that underlines most, if not all, of the major historical events that have shaped the world to be the way it is today: food. From ancient times to modern day, food has been much more than just a survival factor. Things such as production costs and desired net profit can determine whether a business succeeds or not. Having a balance between quantity and price is the greatest control any business can have. Pricing is obviously one of the most beneficial, or destructive, parts of a business. Pricing is the first and most valuable thing an individual will look at, which will overrule most other judgments based off of quality and detail. Balancing the price, however, helps to create a pristine product, with just the right amount of detail that will fuel the market, while still generating a steady net income.
Due to climate changes, we are a “gradual and uncertain rather than immediate and obvious” process, we as humans cannot understand it (Jamieson, 102). In addition, climate change effects have no geographical bounds and because very few people pay attention to events that occur beyond national boundaries, most people are oblivious to its existence. Jamieson makes the point that climate change must be thought rather than sensed, and we as humans are not very good at thinking (Jamieson, 103). On top of that, even if we succeed in thinking that something is a threat, we are less reactive than if we sense that it is a threat. Since we cannot even comprehend climate change's presence in our world right now, it also makes it extremely difficult for us to comprehend how our anthropogenic actions of today will affect future generations all over the world.

Often the alternatives are set up formally as co-operatives, but others are consciously interdependent, recognizing that producers and consumers need each other. The large food system considers things about value chains and vertical integration, responsible food production, processing, and distribution are circles of farmers that nourish the community. Communities that recognize the connections between good food, local farms, health, and local economics have created the guide for food production.

There are those that believe our planet has reached its maximum capacity to sustain humanity and we need to reduce our population to rectify it. It is also said that our planet is well capable of providing both the nutrition and caloric needs for humanity, both now and into the future as well. Regardless of where one’s opinion of the facts fall between these two arguments, global food security is not where it should be. Uneven development could be argued to be a cause of this. But it is not the only issue affecting the planet.
