For example, literature does a great job of showing the “butterfly effect”. Two texts that have strong examples of this effect are The Tequila Worm by Viola Canales and a short documentary directed by Joshua Seftel called Stranger at the Gate. Both of these show how one small event or action can change the lives of many. In The Tequila Worm, a girl named Sofia, who had recently moved away from her home, was being bullied in school, but one small event brought the bullying to an end. As a result, Sofia started to sit with Coach Clarke right in the middle of the lunch room. Then Coach Clarke convinced Sofia to trade her tacos for her sandwich, and Sofia realized how good her tacos were. So, Coach Clarke then decided to teach Sofia to face the bully by “kicking” her in sports and school. Ultimately, Sofia started studying to get better grades than the bully and also beat her in lots of sports. However, if Coach Clarke had never stepped in, he would have been bullied for the rest of the day. So, she would have likely begged her mother to stop making her tacos because of the racism she was facing. Then her mother would have likely said no because the tacos were an important part of their culture. Consequently, Sofia is constantly bullied by almost everyone at school. Therefore, with all of the hardships she would have faced, she likely would have begun to fail in school and sports.
