The article “Women Talk Too Much” by Janet Homes is about whether or not women talk more than men; Holmes argued that males talk more than females in general, but the debate will continue in this topic for a long time. Holmes starts by asking the question “do women talk more that men?” the author shared sayings from different cultures about women talking too much, after that she go into her discussion. The purpose of the article was clearly to convince the reader that the title is 100% wrong. Homes uses statistics, researches and seminars to support her claim. The article was persuasive as she did a great job in presenting it very well, as she stated her claims early in the article. In the beginning of the article, Holmes presents situations where the men are more talkative, and how that contrasts the myth about women. One of the example that she used was when the author analyzed the number of questions asked in 100 public seminar, and she found that men dominated the discussions in all but seven. Margaret Wente’s Globe and Mail article on what women could learn from men presents itself as dogmatic and controversial. Wente’s intent is to persuade their readers into believing that men have become a scapegoat for society yet women could learn lessons from men. Although Wente does have a clear purpose in explaining what women could learn from men, her argument is weakened by her lack of substantial evidence and her appeal to emotions being manipulative.
Deborah Tannen’s, “Fighting For Our Lives,” explores the ideas and concepts behind human sociology. She delves into the sociolinguistic relationship between women and men in conversation. Tannen amplifies the importance between language and gender and how they affect interpersonal relationships. Tannen showcases her analytical thinking processes by using rhetorical strategies to support her claim on conflicted communication within the argument culture. Specifically, focusing on politics, the law, education, spousal relationships, the media and within work environments. She gives many examples to support her claim by using figurative language and literary devices such as metaphors and logic and reasoning to accurately convey her message.
In her book Making Gender, Ortner argues that women's different bodily functions may cause them to be closer to nature, place them in different social roles, and give them a different psychic structure than men (27). Along with the woman-is-to-man-as-nature-is-to-culture analogy come other dichotomies associated with masculinity and femininity. Women's writings are traditionally more circular than linear and women are more concerned with their bodies than men. The opposite can then be said about men; they write in a linear style more often and value their bodies less.
Hence, it is only deductible that men be the most talkative since in situations where the status quo plays a role, higher status people are more loquacious. Yet, it has been proven that in informal situations, where status does not play a role, men and women are equally verbal. However, experiments have shown that one can reduce the claim that “men talk more” when a more female sensible/oriented subject is brought up. Gender Matters is a collection of various essays on feminist linguistic texts analysis, by Sara Mills. Mills develops methods of analyzing literary and non-literary texts, in addition to conversational analysis based on a feminist approach. The author draws on data from her collection of essays gathered over the last two decades on feminism during the 1990s. The essays focus on gender issues, the representation of gender in reading, writing, and in public speaking. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of feminists’ analysis of sexism in literature and the relation between gender and politeness. The article is informative for my research paper, as my topic is going to cover language analysis of the text and who women reading and writing differs according to the discourse analysis within linguistic, psychology, case studies audiences and surveys. The book would be helpful, particularly the last three essays that discusses gender, public speaking, the question of politeness and impoliteness in public speaking. Mills’ analysis is not complete without including the idea of global notions of both women and men, to see whether women and men write and read in the same way globally. Therefore, an update would enrich the book’s discussion section. Although, Mills addresses the class and race theme in language and public speaking, I will only look into the role of language that plays a part in doing or reducing gender in literary, non-literary texts and in conversation.

Women get typecasted based on varied issues, which causes many to think why females are the only ones being addressed. One stereotype that challenged assumptions of many is the stereotype of how much men and women like to speak (“Stereotypes Against Women”). A great number of people think women are more excessively communicative than men. The stereotype is so pervasive that it is said men supposedly speak about 7,000 words per day while women speak about 45,000 words per day (“Stereotypes Against Women”). Although this is just an estimate of how much speaking is done by both the genders, this wasn’t even near as to what the actual result was when microphones were put on them to record how much they communicate throughout the day. “The stereotype was proven inaccurate as both men and women speak about 17,000 words per day” (“Stereotypes Against Women”). David Grazian’s study builds on Quinn’s research on men and women's interactions and Grazian finds similar results as Quinn did in her study. In the study of Grazian the performance of both men and women was driven by both genders trying to prove that they are as the audience (society) says they should be. Since the development of civilization, women have always been viewed as subordinate to men in all aspects of life. This is especially true in regards to the communication styles of both sexes. The expository text “ His Politeness is Her Powerlessness” by Deborah Tannen and Charlotte Bronte’s gothic novel, Jane Eyre, demonstrates a shocking similarity between the 1820s and the 21st century in regards to men’s view point on women’s style of communication. According to the texts, women will always be viewed as the inferior sex regardless of their communication style.

Not only are males portrayed in higher paying and more prestigious occupations than ladies, yet they are moreover portrayed in higher economic wellbeing and circumstances (Glascock, 2001). Morris (2006) also found that men were twice as likely as ladies to be depicted in a very intriguing manner in magazines around the world; but for the ladies, they were depicted in household/domestic related themes/topics. Correspondingly, ladies in prime-time TV shows will probably be depicted in conjugal parts while men were depicted in word related parts (Lauzen et al., 2008). Conflicting to this examination is single ladies, who will probably have proficient inclinations than wedded ladies (Elasmar et al., 1999).

The book An Intorduction of Sociolinguistics is an outstanding introductary book in the field of sociolinguistics. It encompasses a wide range of language issues. In chapter 13, Wardhaugh provides a good insight to the relationship between language and gender. He explains gender differences of language-in-use with concise examples. Wardhaugh riases questions about sexist language and guides readers to look closer at how people use language differently because of their own gender in daily life. According to the Whorfian hypothesis, which indicates that the way people use language reflects their thoughts, different genders adapt different communication strategies.
