Are people evil or just their behaviors and actions? How can someone be naturally evil or born evil? They’re not, people’s behaviors and actions is what defines who they are as a person. In my opinion that’s what makes someone good or evil. At the beginning of “The Stranger” we read about Meursault’s mother passing away while in her nursing home. During her funeral Meursault does not shed a tear or show any emotions towards his mother’s passing. Also while at the funeral Meursault eats and smokes a cigarette around his mother’s coffin. The author writes “ Then he offered to me a cup of coffee with milk. I like milk in my coffee, so I said yes, and he came back a few minutes later with a tray. I drank the coffee. Then I felt like having a smoke. but I hesitated, because I didn’t know if I could do it with Maman right there. I thought about it; it didn’t matter. I offered the caretaker a cigarette and we smoked.” Meursault knew it was wrong, but he still ate and smoked around the coffin. “ He wanted to write her a letter.” “ But Raymond told me he didn’t think he could write the kind of letter it would take and that he’d thought of asking me to write it for him, Since I didn’t say anything, he asked if I’d mind doing it right then and I said no.” This quote I took from the book shows that Meursault knew what Raymond was planning on doing and he didn’t hesitate to help Raymond out on getting revenge on his ex girlfriend. In this chapter, Raymond’s ex girlfriend is evil for her actions of cheating on Raymond, Raymond is evil by beating his girlfriend, and Meursault is evil by writing the letter for
