Bankruptcy carries a stigma although when bankruptcy is truly necessary, it provides financial relief for those in need. I know many individuals who have declared bankruptcy. Some due to their own financial mistakes and others due to unforeseen circumstances.
In my opinion, many people have to declare bankruptcy due to medical debts especially cancers patients and their families. According to Christensen (2016), "People being treated for cancer have a 2.5 times greater risk of declaring bankruptcy than the general public" (p. 28). Younger cancer patients are ten times more likely to file for bankruptcy than patients 65 and older.
