The Adventure of the Speckled Band starts off in the early morning in 1883. A woman named Mrs. Stoner, wakes up the household of Sherlock Holmes, stating that she has a case for Sherlock. Mrs. Stoner talks about her mother whom was killed eight years ago. After her mother passed, Mrs. Stoner was left behind with her stepfather, Mr. Roylott, and her sister, Julia. After the death of their mother, Mr. Roylott became very violent and killed their butler and went to prison. After prison, he came out just as violent and rude towards his stepdaughters, neighbors and strangers. Mr. Roylott is now living off of his dead wife’s money. The only friends Roylott has are the gypsies who often come over to his home. Two weeks before Mrs. Stoner’s wedding, …show more content…
Julia, her sister, died mysteriously in her room, now two years later, Mrs. Stoner fears her life. Julia’s last words were speckled band, where Mrs.
Stoner thinks she died from being scared. Helen Stoner’s stepfather tells Julia that her room is in need of repair; therefore she now has to move into her dead sister’s room. One night when she was sleeping in Julia’s room, she heard the whistles Julia was hearing before her death. Sherlock Holmes, with help from Watson, decide to take up Mrs. Stoner’s case. They decide to go to Roylott’s home to investigate the scene where Roylott threatens Holmes and admits he followed Helen to his home. At Helen’s home, Sherlock examines the bedrooms of Mrs. Stoner and Roylott. He notices that there are bars on the windows of Julia’s room and realizes his theory of the gypsies is wrong because they had no way of getting in. Holmes finds a bell-pull next to the bed that is attached to the ventilator. Holmes goes into Roylott’s room and notices he has a safe where there is a saucer of milk on top. Next to the safe is a chair along with a dog whip and Holmes seems to have figured out the case. Inside the safe is a snake that Roylott has trained to go through the vent into Julia’s room. The whistle sound Julia heard was Roylott blowing the whistle to have the snake return back to him with no one
noticing. Holmes believes that Roylott wanted to kill the sisters to inherit the sister’s share of their dead mother’s money. The Adventure of the Speckled Band has many similarities as the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, my favorite writer. I highly enjoyed “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” because it is a story with horror, tragedy, and brutality, often of which Edgar Allen Poe writes about. The story is all a mystery in itself, which are stories I tend to enjoy the most. Edgar Allen Poe writes about murders and tragic life events in the characters’ lives, which this story of Sherlock Holmes was about. I think the author, Arthur Conan Doyle, did a fantastic job at keeping the reader’s mind wandering and wondering who killed Julia and how. The story was written in third person as an unnamed narrator. This helped me stay intrigued in the story because I had multiple characters’ perspectives to be viewing the story from. There were so many theories in this story, we, as in the reader’s, had to almost pick and chose which theory to go with. My favorite line of the story was: “Oh, my God! Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!” (Doyle, 1892). This quote sets up the entire story and it helped keep me intrigued. Sherlock Holmes had to figure out what she meant by the speckled band. His original thought was, the speckled band was a nickname for the gypsies, however, it was the snake all along. As a fan of mysteries and dark stories, I believe Arthur Conan Doyle did a beautiful job at writing a brutal and tragic story, which he does not do much of. The third person aspect made it intriguing while trying to perceive the story. Overall, I enjoyed the way the story was told, the setting of the story and the plot.
Fetters, Nyswonger and Arduser are all former members of the Raisins, a Cincinnati-based band that was a local success in the early 1980s. In 1983, the Raisins, who then consisted of Fetters, Nyswonger, Rick Neiheisel (keyboards, vocals) and Rick "Bam" Powell (drums, vocals), recorded an eponymous album, produced by Adrian Belew. Adrian's friendship with the Raisins dated back to the mid-'70s, when he crossed paths with them as a member of a band named Sweetheart before being discovered by Frank Zappa. The Raisins album, which was released on the small Cincinnati-based label Strugglebaby, produced a local No. 1 hit, "Fear is Never Boring" (later re-recorded for the Bears' first album), on popular Cincinnati radio stations. Clive Davis, then head of Arista Records, considered signing the band, but the Raisins didn't break through nationally.
Helen emerged from her room around 11:00 pm asking for a bottle of wine and Mrs. Townsend delivered the wine and engaged in brief conversation while noticing the young man lying on the bed reading. She was very familiar with Robinson and was able to say without a doubt that he was the one that was in the bedroom with Helen. No one saw him leave nor did anyone let him out. Mrs. Townsend testified that a man had knocked on her door asking to be let out, but told him to have his woman to come and get the key. No one returned for the key so there is no possible logical explanation of how Richard got out of the house, nor was a logical possibility of how anyone else could have gotten in the house.
To begin with everything is going fine and things are going on the same, as they would do every other day. The husband has just got home from work and his wife asks him how his day has been 'Hullo darling' she says and then gets him a drink. The fact it is just like every other day shows in the relaxed atmosphere, which is described as 'a blissful time of day' The atmosphere also seams to be warm and cosy as she was 'luxuriating in his company' Where as in the Speckled Band the setting is really as you would expected a murder mystery setting to be. This shows as at the start there is an air of panic as Watson and Holmes have been 'knocked up' as 'a young lady had arrived in a considerable state of excitement' The murder setting is also typical as it is in a large country manor, owned by the well-known Surry Family of the Roylotts of Stoke Moran.
The inspector arrives in the middle of a celebration of the daughter (Sheila) and her engagement to the wealthy Gerald Croft. With the minimum of questioning, the family reveals many things about themselves that links them all to the death. When the inspector leaves, the family discovers he wasn't a real police inspector at all. and are relieved (save Sheila and Eric) to find out from the infirmary, that there has been no suicide. Shortly after this, police call and tell them there has been a suicide and police inspector will be called to discuss the matter.
How Does Arthur Conan Doyle Create Tension And Suspense In The Speckled Band The Speckled Band is just one of the murder mystery stories featuring the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was not any ordinary detective, he was a detective who was famous for solving murders. In this case Holmes is trying to solve the mystery of the 'Speckled Band'. Some examples of tension building techniques are dramatic events and in some instances the inclusion of red herrings. Bad weather and night time are also used as a means of building up atmosphere and tension.

The film adaptations of literary works can sometimes be a nightmare. However, they can also turn out better than the original work in some rare instances. In the case of The Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the movie was a better format for telling the murder mystery because of the movie’s ability to show rather than tell the audience what is happening, the clearer explanation of the plot, and the more in-depth development of the characters.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” is much more than another
Examine the role of Sherlock Holmes as a Detective in the Story Of The Speckled Band The creator of the very legendry stories of Sherlock Holmes was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sir Arthur.
