The Social Concept of Beauty Everything around us in society seems to contain hidden messages. The media is a main proponent of this, including television shows, magazines, billboard signs, and commercials among others. All of these variations of media have something in common; they depict all woman having thin bodies. Many girls and women are left thinking, "What's wrong with me, my body doesn't look like that?" Unfortunately today we are exposed to the media constantly, which invariably influences girls' self-images, often negatively. I look at myself in the mirror and see a body that can afford to lose ten to fifteen pounds. I frequently find myself comparing my body to all of the models and actresses on television. The media is influencing my self-image and causing me to think I do not look good enough according to our society, when I am average weight in reality. One component of the media is advertisements. Often they not only sell products, but also sell images, values, and concepts of sexuality. They stereotype what we should look like and what is considered "normal." This includes perfect skin, washboard abdomens, tall and thin legs, a big chest, and overall a beautiful, perfect body. Advertisers target young girls because they are very vulnerable and sensitive at the age during adolescence. What the advertiser does not either realize or care about is the fact that girls take it to heart that they are not good enough and are unworthy. I look at an advertisement of Naomi Campbell and think, "How can she be that thin at her height?" What the media neglects to tell us is that her hips are computerized to look smaller than they really are. Fortunately, many girls overcome this obstacle. It takes strength and will power to move on, but in the end the girls will feel like they accomplished something. Advertising companies must terminate the publishing of only beautiful, "perfect" women. In today's society, with the various amounts of individuality expressed, it would be beneficial to girls if they actually turned on the television and saw a girl on a commercial that is a size 10, instead of a size 2. The media should expand its horizons and realize that the world has a lot of people who are not tall and skinny. They can focus a little more on inner beauty and strengths, then maybe when we look in the mirror, we would not just see what we look like on the outside, we would be able to see the person we really are.
These advertisers promote a body image that is completely unrealistic and impossible to achieve (Dohnt & Tiggemann, 2006b). The media is a fascinating tool; it can deliver entertainment, self-help, intellectual knowledge, information, and a variety of other positive influences; however, despite its advances for the good of our society is has a particular blemish in its physique that targets young women. This blemish is seen in the unrealistic body images that it presents, and the inconsiderate method of delivery that forces its audience into interest and attendance. Women are bombarded with messages from every media source to change their bodies, buy specific products and redefine their opinion of beauty to the point where it becomes not only a psychological disease, but a physical one as well.
The media uses means such as social media, magazines, and television to influence people, specifically teenagers. Adolescence can be a confusing time for everyone, but teenage girls are more vulnerable to their influence due to their emotional maturity. Although girls currently believe that this impossible body image is expected of them, they develop eating disorders because of it. For example, the Victoria's secret fashion show and underwear commercials help set up the impossible beauty standard all girls and women are trying to achieve. Those models live by a strict diet and exercise routine plus their photos are manipulated in order to look the way they do. A typical stereotype of a woman is that they are frigid, superficial, and dependent. Most young women in media are wearing suggestive clothing. Rap music tends to reinforce the stereotype that women are only good as accessories. I think it’s very sad to see what our society has made women to be. I chose to do this because I know a lot of girls who kill themselves at the gym or constantly go on diets to achieve this idea of perfection that doesn’t exist. Watching the news makes us aware of the latest trend, new gadget, who’s in rehab, or who has an eating disorder. In the eyes of society, women like Eva Longoria, Kim Kardashian, and Megan Fox are the epitome of perfection. What girl wouldn’t want to look like them? Unfortunately, this includes most of the girls in the US. Through TV shows, commercials, magazines or any form of advertising, the media enforces a certain body type which women emulate. The media has created a puissant social system where everyone must obtain a thin waist and large breasts. As a society, we are so image obsessed with the approval of being thin and disapproval of being overweight, that it is affecting the health of most women. Many people might think they aren't influenced by the media, but in actuality they are. Andersen in Thinking About Women writes “Each of us sees thousands of advertisements per day. Advertisements not only sell the products we use, but they also convey images of how we are to define ourselves, our relationships, and our needs”(57). Every time we turn the television on, we can expect roughly twenty minutes of an hour show to be commercials. These commercials are normally aimed at women and how to become young again. Aging in society for women is seen as a failure and according to media influence, if your age is showing then your careless of your self-image. So in return women will spend money on beauty products sworn to work, but never do. The perfect woman is unattainable because we come from different nationalities and because of these differences, women will never be able to copy-cat their idol making their self-esteem drop. The human body is one of the most complex and yet beautiful things on the earth. We live in a time where our perception of the way we view the body is driven my social stereotypes. In todays world we are supposed to live by the standards of this unwritten code. All of this affects the quality of life we live in. In recent years, the media has boomed, creating a variety of problems for young people, especially young females across the globe. The media is presented to young people in more ways than ever, no especially with the three categories, the first being televisions and movies, second, social media and third, advertising. Each of these categories come with their own problems; each provoking self-esteem and body issues. Today, the world of media has constructed the ideal image of what a woman should be, and in the process, promoted an unattainable, unrealistic beauty, that is creating problems for females all around the world.
Advertising creates a mythical dream world where there are no problems, everyone is beautiful, and has money to spare. Advertisements depict the way in which people think women and men are “supposed to be” (Cortese 52). Women are shown all these images as role models, which are unattainable. Females are not able to be happy with their bodies because everyday in the media they are told that they are not beautiful. The average American woman is 5 feet tall and weighs 142 pounds. When is the last time you saw a women meeting these qualifications in any advertisement? No one on this planet is exactly the same, but people still feel the need to meet this standard.
