It can be hard for people to see past the ‘single story’ when they live in so many different overlapping mobs, it can push a person to take actions and believe in things not normal for them. The ‘single story’ of a person can sound simple, but thats actually the point, its not simple at all but really complex. The ‘single story’ creates the idea that something, such as a person, is made up of nothing but one thing. It shows one side, without showing all the other things that it is made up of. It’s kind of like saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, you can’t base your entire mindset on someone or something, because theres much more to it then that one thing you see or hear. I remember first feeling slight surprise. And then, I was overwhelmed with shame. I realized that I had been so immersed in the media coverage of Mexicans that they had become one thing in my mind, the abject immigrant. I had bought into the single story of Mexicans and I could not have been more ashamed of myself. So that is how to create a single story, show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become,” (8:54-9:25) Adichie realized that she fell right into ‘the single story’ of Mexicans; after hearing so much about what the media had covered Mexicans out to be, that once she had physically saw them, it was as if she was seeing exactly what they were labeled to be. Adichies point express that showing someone as if they are only one thing, can make them become that single thing and nothing but it. Adichie tells her audience that even her negative stories make her who she is as a person, but a single story can’t even begin to cover who she is. All of the stories you have as a person show who you are, for someone to insist you are only what one single story makes you to be, completely ignores the things that truly made you who are. Having a ‘single story’ viewpoint is not only a dangerous viewpoint for others but it can be dangerous for yourself as well. Giving someone only a single story, and nothing else robs people of the respect they have for themselves and the respect others will have for them. These single stories, wether true or not, can point out nether less the flaws and the strengths and aims to put people aside from each other rather than putting people together. Stories have been around just as long as people have, while stories can show different messages, they can be overall told to bring people together.
