Throughout history several ideologies were acquired from different governmental institutions and implemented in establishing the United States Government. Both The Roman Republic and Athenian democracy have a great impact on our government today. The Roman Republic, on the other hand, utilizes many different concepts from different types of governments and executes it in its own government. Moreover, Athenian democracy shares a great deal of similarities with our government such as equality before the law, meritocracy, and open society. Through the basic understanding of those two institutions we can understand more about our own government. Some fundamental aspects that are used in our government today are majority rules, checks and balances, freedom of religion, Habeas Corpus, and the implementation of different governmental ideologies to form one government in order to further strengthen and stabilize it. Finally, we can observe how these ideas were used in the past and how they are carried out today. In this case we learn that Athenian democracy greatly influences the idea of majority rules. As we take a look at the Declaration of Independence it affirms the fact that the colonies lacked a democracy, in fact, Great Britain establishes a monarchy at the time. Considering their condition at the time and how the colonies despised having a monarchy they made certain that the disadvantages and consequences of having one is mentioned in the Declaration of Independence. As a result, the Declaration of Independence states “[king] has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature…” Moreover, as the quote is analyzed it... ... middle of paper ... ...ns, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these states.” Considering the previous quote we can conclude that the administration of Great Britain did not utilize the same approach as The Roman Republic, instead they strived on one kind of administration, and according to Jefferson it was a tyranny. Furthermore, he describes it as “repeated injuries” connoting that the administration is not effective. Also, the fact that the colonies despised the British Empire and loathed their administration as well as their policies, it would be logical to think that when the colonies do declare independence from the empire they will not repeat what their suppressors have done, let alone mirror their actions. When looking at our government today one can perceive a vast amount of similarities shared with the administration of The Roman Republic.
However, the author 's interpretations of Jefferson 's decisions and their connection to modern politics are intriguing, to say the least. In 1774, Jefferson penned A Summary View of the Rights of British America and, later, in 1775, drafted the Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms (Ellis 32-44). According to Ellis, the documents act as proof that Jefferson was insensitive to the constitutional complexities a Revolution held as his interpretation of otherwise important matters revolved around his “pattern of juvenile romanticism” (38). Evidently, the American colonies’ desire for independence from the mother country was a momentous decision that affected all thirteen colonies. However, in Ellis’ arguments, Thomas Jefferson’s writing at the time showed either his failure to acknowledge the severity of the situation or his disregard of the same. Accordingly, as written in the American Sphinx, Jefferson’s mannerisms in the first Continental Congress and Virginia evokes the picture of an adolescent instead of the thirty-year-old man he was at the time (Ellis 38). It is no wonder Ellis observes Thomas Jefferson as a founding father who was not only “wildly idealistic” but also possessed “extraordinary naivete” while advocating the notions of a Jeffersonian utopia that unrestrained
And so, as he inquires about the safety of America and its liberties he must take time to see how his role is crucial in americas potential downfall. In the paragraph of Query 18 Jefferson asks the question “can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God?” This rhetorical question shows how the effects of groupthink and how it negatively affected the masses and allowed individuals like Jeffersons to encourage the act of slavery yet, use the idea of America and its government as a scapegoat. Additionally, by admitting that “Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever:” Jefferson shows that he knows exactly what he is doing and that his actions have repercussions and that he has fell victim to Internalisation Conformity. Internalisation Conformity “when one adopts the ideas and actions of which it is composed - is intrinsically rewarding. The U.S. government is a democracy built off of the bases of greek and roman government, both of which are more common than most realize. Through the attempt of recreating these two once great societies the United States has built what is now known as arguably the most stable government on the planet. Thanks to these two societies the United States of America is the global powerhouse government and society where everyone wants to live today.

In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson appeals to patriotism. Jefferson ensures this by persuading the colonists to become self-governing. He tries to let all of the people of the New World understand that they have protested and defended themselves against the British for all of the corrupt acts the British have committed upon the colonists. Jefferson’s tone in the Declaration of Independence portrays how tiresome he has grown of the British rule after all of the deception towards Americans. Included within the idea of patriotism, is the idea of loyalty to the fundamental values and principles underlying American democracy. Thomas Paine also provides patriotism to get advocates for the movement to separate from the British forces. Correspondingly, Paine persuades Americans that they will prosper in numerous areas without the control of the British saying, “Is the power who is jealous of our prosperity, a proper power to govern us? Whoever says No to this question is an independent, for independency means no more, than, whether we shall make our own laws…” (Paine). Thomas Jefferson had a different view on how the government should run over what Thomas Paine felt. I really like how Thomas Paine worded it the best by stating “In order for the colonist to prosper in the long term, the colonies need to be independent.” Paine all so states “by declaring independence, America will be able to ask for help from other countries in its struggle for freedom.” The colonist just needed to break away so they could grow on their own. By the colonists breaking away is how the United States of America was formed.

Jefferson used two main strategies in convincing his audience. First, as I have already mentioned, he uses factual evidence to support his claim. The list of cruel acts is his factual evidence. The amount of details that make up this list shows how much importance Jefferson placed on factual evidence as support. If he had used fewer facts here, the document might not have fully explained why the Americans demanded independence. Second, Jefferson exercised appeal to values in supporting his argument. He wanted others to feel the pain and suffering that has haunted the Americans and share similar morals. In paragraph five he says, "Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies" (17). Here he tries to evoke the sense of feeling. He assumes the reader will feel this pain and agree that King George III is wrong for his actions. He then goes on to say, "The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of injuries and unsurpations, all having in direct object the exact establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States" (17).
During the age of Pericles, the ideal form of government was believed to be a government formed by all of the citizens regardless of wealth or social standing. This was known as democracy, literally meaning “ government of the people” [Document 3.] This government favored the many instead of the few. Athens was a direct democracy, meaning every citizen participated in debates. Western civilization used this philosophy of government by many, and created an indirect democracy where citizens elect officials to make and enforce laws.
The political culture that defines American politics shows that despite this compromise, America is still very much a democratic society. The very history of the country, a major contributor to the evolution of its political culture, shows a legacy of democracy that reaches from the Declaration of Independence through over two hundred years to today’s society. The formation of the country as a reaction to the tyrannical rule of a monarchy marks the first unique feature of America’s democratic political culture. Greece and Rome has contributed greatly to The U.S. government, providing the concept of democracy as a whole. In ancient Rome men can “vote for people to represent them” and the voted people became the “senate” (Document 5). Having a democracy run this way made it convenient and made sure everyone had a say, even in a large area. Ruling such a large area made it harder to stay on the same track, which is why the Romans also created “a code of laws” (Document 6). This shows in our government today

The system of government we have today was starting to developed centuries ago by the Athenians and Romans. Both governments were established with the intent to give power to the people, even though it did not always play out that way in society. The Athenian democracy and the Roman republic were two very different governments in practice, but also maintained similar characteristics in both systems of government.
