The community described in The Giver has many similarities compared to ours. One of these similarities is having a government. The role of the government in both societies is to make decisions concerning rules or laws. Another similarity is the fact children have to attend school. The schools in the Giver also have announcements over the intercom. Children in The Giver have rules that they need to follow, just like we do. In the schools described in the book, if someone said a word wrong while they were being taught how to speak, they would get a smack. Although students do not have as harsh of a punishment as being smacked for pronouncing a work incorrectly in our schools, they are disciplined for breaking rules. The names are not the same,
but in both communities, little children have “comfort objects” or as we know it stuffed animals. Although there are many similarities there are numerous differences. Jonas’s community in The Giver is different from ours in many ways. The biggest difference is probably how no one in Jonas’s community can see color. Another significant difference is how in the Giver, there are no cars because people are only allowed to ride bikes. Punishment in Jonas’s community is much more severe than most penalties in our government. For instance, the penalty in their community is mostly being released. Punishment varies in our society based on the crime. In our community we have the ability to choose what job we have, unlike Jonas’s community where the job is assigned to the person. A large difference is how the people in the community in The Giver take a pill that makes their feelings fade away. Even though our community isn’t perfect, I would still prefer it over the one depicted in the Giver.
The Giver and Matched are both futuristic societies with a lot of rules. In The Giver the Elders choose their match as well as their children. Jonas starts loving Fiona but isn’t allowed and stops taking the pill. In Matched the officials choose their match but they can have their own children. Cassia is matched with Xander but also loves Ky and doesn't know what to do. In both story they all get jobs for the rest of their lives but in Matched they just call it vocations. Jonas gets the Receiver of memory and Cassia is supposed to be the sorter.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Jonas knocked on the door. A tall shadowed figure came to the door, it was the giver. He let them in and put them on a bed. Jonas started to ask questions to the giver, “Where are we.”

Teacher must be able to perform with inadequate teaching materials and minimal funding for her salary and for the maintenance of the school." If you fit these qualifications, you would've been a wonderful addition to the old Western schoolhouse.
Sameness is the quality or state of being alike or of not changing. Everyone is same in Jonas’s community. Sameness has both advantages and disadvantages, but more advantages in The Giver by Lois Lowry.
Throughout the history of the world, there has been many societies. All these societies had similar structures and ideas, but they all are different by their own special traditions and ways of life. Similarly, both our society and the society in The Giver share similar ideas, but they are different in certain areas. For example, they both celebrate birthdays and have family units, but they have their own way of doing so. Based on the celebration of birthdays and the formation of family units, our society is better than the society in The Giver by Lois Lowry.
Lois Lowry describes a futuristic world with controlled climate, emotions, way of living and eliminates suffering in her book The Giver. The main character, Jonas, shows the reader what his world is like by explaining a very different world from what society knows today. Everything is controlled, and no one makes choices for themselves or knows of bad and hurtful memories. There is no color, and everything is dull. As he becomes the Receiver who has to know all the memories and pass them down to the next Receiver, he realizes his world needs change. He starts to believe that a world of sameness where no one can decide or make choices for themselves is boring. Lois Lowry is warning readers that living in a world of sameness is not something to create as it is boring and dull, but if the world follows conformity and does not value diversity and difference enough, society could become that of Jonas’s.

The book The Giver uses words that may sound complex, but those words meant almost the same thing as words that are not so complex. For example, the word “newchildren” is almost the exact same word as “newborn baby”. There is slightly a difference between the two words. Lois Lowry does a great job of interpreting the original words into new words, but still keeping an identical meaning. Residential schools all across Canada have left its students with the difficult task of regaining a normal life after various abuses. This legacy of residential school system is still affecting people today. In the books Kiss of the Fur Queen by Tomson Highway and Creative Escape 2013 by various inmates, tell stories of attending a residential school and then dealing with the legacy of the residential school system by finding different ways to overcome the effects of the residential school system. One effects of the legacy of the residential school system is isolation. Another effect of the legacy of the residential school system is guilt. Lastly the loss of identity is an effect of the residential school system legacy. The legacy of residential schools through the works of Kiss of the Fur Queen and Creative Escape 2013 show that the legacy of residential schools has caused the survivors to feel isolated from family and community leading to various consequences, the guilt that the characters are taught in the residential schools is carried with the characters after they leave the schools, and the loss of identity the students are left with after leaving the school and going into the cities. These texts not only show that there is a legacy of the residential school system and that the characters face it but that the characters in the texts also find strategies to overcome this legacy through the use of art, traditional teachings and religion.
The story in The Giver by Lois Lowry takes place in a community that is not normal. People cannot see color, it is an offense for somebody to touch others, and the community assigns people jobs and children. This unnamed community shown through Jonas’ eye, the main character in this novel, is a perfect society. There is no war, crime, and hunger. Most readers might take it for granted that the community in The Giver differs from the real society. However, there are several affinities between the society in present day and that in this fiction: estrangement of elderly people, suffering of surrogate mothers, and wanting of euthanasia.

While reading The Giver, the community gives off a sense of control over everybody. As the book goes on form chapter to chapter, more rules and control are discovered. The people in charge chose for the whole community what everyone should wear, what everyone should eat, what children should learn in school, what to think, ect. From morning to night, any citizen from the community is being controlled. Everything they do in a day gets controlled. From what time to wake up all the way from the time they go to bed. “‘Jonas has not been assigned,’she informed the crowd, and his heart sank. Then she went on. ‘Jonas has been selected...Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory’” (60). The community controls what job you have for the rest of your life until you enter the House of the Old. Jonas, who eventually finds out about how controlled everybody is, decides to leave. Anybody would want to leave that community after the truth was unleashed because they would realize how controlled they are. The community kills babies and old people too. They kill them because it’s part of the process of sameness, which is also another way everything is
The Giver starts off as the ordinary story of an eleven-year-old boy named Jonas. When we meet the protagonist, he is apprehensive about the Ceremony of Twelve, at which he will be assigned his job. Although he has no clue as to what job he might be assigned, he is astonished when he is selected to be the Receiver of Memory. He learns that it is a job of the highest honor, one that requires him to bear physical pain of a magnitude beyond anyone’s experience.
We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others” (97). In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, no one has seen a rainbow after a storm, no one knew what colors were; what choosing was; what it meant to be an individual. Everyone lived in complete Sameness, and never learned what it meant to be an individual. By eliminating as much self expression as possible in Sameness and society, Jonas's community has rejected the individuality of a society where people are free to move society forward. In The Giver individuality is represented by colors, memories, and pale eyes.
