This erasure of language, however, more realistically symbolizes his inability to talk truthfully and accurately about his past traumatic events. He does not physically lose his voice, from what we know, or endure any physical injury that caused him to become mute. He claims that he lost language, not his voice, one word at a time: “I haven’t always been silent, I used to talk and talk and talk and talk, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut, the silence overtook me like a cancer” (Foer 16). It is ironic, now, that he still “talks and talks and talks” but no longer using his voice to convey this “talk” but rather through the writings in his journal, in the letters, on his body, and on his wall. He swims in a sea of words as they wash off of him each day, and he sleeps in sheets of words as he has written all over his bedding. Early on in the text, Grandfather at one point recounts some of the words he lost: “‘I lost ‘carry,’ I lost the things I carried—‘daybook,’ ‘pencil,’ ‘pocket change,’ ‘wallet’—I even lost ‘loss’ (Foer 16–17). Mullins notes that “the loss of the word loss suggests a blurring of the lines between absence and loss” (Mullins 315). The action of losing something demands someone at fault, which Grandfather assumes is at his hands. Ida Fink’s work, “The Table”, is an example of how old or disturbing memories may not contain the factual details required for legal documentation. The purpose of her writing is to show us that people remember traumatic events not through images, sounds, and details, but through feelings and emotions. To break that down into two parts, Fink uses vague characters to speak aloud about their experiences to prove their inconsistencies, while using their actions and manners to show their emotions as they dig through their memories in search of answers in order to show that though their spoken stories may differ, they each feel the same pain and fear.

There was limited information on the firsthand accounts of the bombing of Dresden in the actual city. Since Vonnegut experienced it and wrote the novel around the fictional character of Billy Pilgrim, it’s a great source of information for recounts from the survivors of the bombing. Pilgrim experienced horrendous things once the bombs stopped falling on the city, he saw the remains of bodies under the rubble and charred. Everything that survived was sent back to a time of savagery “Wild dogs, packs of rats fattened on corpses, escaped maniacs and murderers, soldiers who would never quit killing until they themselves were killed.” Pilgrim saw how the war affected all the people and how it didn’t exclude civilians. It was meant to kill everything and cause the enemy’s morale to break. “Everything was one big flame. The one flame ate everything organic, everything that would burn.” The only thing left after the bombings were charred bodies and hollowed out buildings, the entire city became a skeleton of rubble and bodies. John Hersey shows that the atomic bomb is merciless by explaining the effect of the bomb on children. Hersey describes a mother’s search for her children to do so, “She heard a child cry, ‘Mother, help me,’ and saw her youngest, Myeko… buried up to her breast and unable to move. As Mrs. Nakamura started frantically to claw her baby, she could see or hear nothing of her other children” (Hersey 10, 11). He uses an example of children in danger because they are usually perceived as vulnerable, which helps Hersey make his point. Consequently, the reader undergoes feelings of sorrow because those who are attacked are not capable of defending themselves. Hersey is able to easily prove his case by illustrating the suffering of the most vulnerable of victims.

In Scott Momaday’s The Way to Rainy Mountain, Momaday reclaims his past by remembering the time he spends with his grandmother. Her character is portrayed as being anxious through the author’s choice of dialogue in the form of diction, which is “waves of her [the mother] anxiety sink down into my belly”. The effect of this is to allow the readers to establish the emotions of the narrator, as well as establish an the uneasy tone of the passage, and how stressful and important the event of selling tobacco bales for her family is. Additionally, the narrator is seen to be uncomfortable in the setting she is present in. This is seen through the many dashes and pauses within her thoughts because she has no dialogue within this passage, “wishing- we- weren’t- here”, the dashes show her discomfort because the thought is extended, and thus more intense and heavy, wishing they could be somewhere else. The effect of the narrator’s comfort establishes her role within the family, the reason she and her sister does not have dialogue symbolizes that she has no voice within the family, as well as establishing hierarchy. Bruno, an eight year old boy at the time of the war, is completely oblivious to the atrocities of the war around him - even with a father who is a Nazi commandant. The title of the book is evidence to this - Bruno perceives the concentration camp uniforms as "striped pajamas." Further evidence is the misnomers "the Fury," (the Furher) and "Out-With" (Auschwitz). Bruno and Shmuel, the boy he meets from Auschwitz, share a great deal in common but perhaps what is most striking is the childhood innocence which characterizes both boys. Bruno is unaware that his father is a Nazi commandant and that his home is on ther periphery of Auschwitz. Shmuel, imprisoned in the camp, seems not to understand the severity of his situation. When his father goes missing, Shmuel does not understand that he has gone to the gas chamber.
