"The Sea of Monsters" by Rick Riordan is the second book in the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series. In this book, Percy Jackson takes on a quest to save his beloved Camp Half Blood. This book is a tale of Good vs Evil as seen from the point of view of Percy. He must not only fight for the camp but the lives of those around him that he cares about. This book combines the current world with the world of the Greek mythological gods such as Zeus and Poseidon. Percy Jackson is seen nearing the end of his seventh grade year and although excited about being done with the school, and going to Camp Half Blood for the summer, Percy is concerned about a vivid dream he has had regarding his friend Grover. Percy is not sure what the dream has meant but ultimately decides he has to focus on school. When Percy arrives at school he and his friend, Tyson, are bullied by a group of new boys that have arrived. Tyson …show more content…
The boat eventually is destroyed in an attempt to reach their destination and Percy believes everyone has died except him and Annabeth. When Percy and Annabeth reach the Island they find that Grover is being held captive by a large Polyphemus, a large cyclops. They are able to rescue Grover and the item that can save Thalia's tree, a golden fleece. While escaping Tyson shows up and helps them evade Polyphemus. When they arrive back at Camp Half-Blood with the golden fleece the tree does revive. Percy has been told of a prophecy that regards a child of the gods although it does not specify which child. It is believed by many that Percy is the only child it could be. When the fleece is put on Thalia's tree Thalia is pulled from the tree, fully recovered. Percy realizes that Thalia could be the child that the prophecy speaks of that could destroy Olympus and that this is the reason the tree had been
Percy’s relationship with other characters reveal a lot about who he is.The feelings with his mother is that there close. Percy feelings his dad is he thinks he’s a coward and Percy doesn't like his step father. Percy's feelings with his mom is that they are both close because in the text it says “But ever since, my mom went out of her way to eat blue. She baked blue birthday cakes. She mixed blueberry smoothies. She bought blue-corn tortilla chips and brought home blue candy from the shop. This—along with keeping her maiden name, Jackson, rather than calling herself Mrs. Ugliano—was proof that she wasn't totally suckered by Gabe. She did have a rebellious streak, like me.” This shows they are close because he calls her mom and cares about
Percy Jackson lives a normal but hard life. The reader is able to determine that this is the ordinary world as Percy has not been told his true identity. Percy thinks he is an ordinary average teenage boy attending sixth grade at his sixth school, Yancy Academy which is a “private school for troubled kids in upstate New York.” Percy mentions that his life is quite confusing as well as he describes he has dyslexia and ADHD. These are the problems create a major issues as they affecting and make his academic achievement difficult. At birth Percy’s first father had left him and his mother. After his father left them his mother decided to get remarried. From Percy’s point of view this was not a smart choice as his step father treated her poorly. Percy is definitely unsatisfied and frustrated with her decision as he respects and cares about her a lot. Percy also greatly loves his mother as he defends her when she is disrespected by his stepfather. Percy seems to only have one real friend, Grover who is scrawny and “on top of all that, he is crippled”. He does not associate with other kids as he feels he does not belong with them. The reason he is in trouble at home and school could be that others don’t recognize and realize him as well as he does not understand his place. This is what the reader would classify as Percy’s ordinary world. From this point on, the story will further develop into the next stage call to adventure as the ordinary world seems to be a place the he despises.
For starters, Percy is the son of Poseidon, which I think is pretty awesome. Being the son of Poseidon also means that he can practically breath underwater without requiring those nasty gills people see on fish. Besides being able to breath underwater, Percy is also pretty great at being the comical relief in those tense monster fighting situations. Also, since Percy used to be the only main character in Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, I’m already used to the way he acts and talks to other characters. In all I love that Rick brought my favorite character Percy back into the
Good vs. Evil is a prominent theme in both The Odyssey and The Lord of the Flies through the characterization and plot elements. This is shown in both through internal and external conflicts. The theme also makes both stories more compelling, as it can be applied to real life situations.
The characters in my book are very interesting, there are 3 main characters. Percy, Grover, and Annabeth. Percy is the son of Poseidon who is a Greek God. A powerful God who rules over all the oceans and everything in them. Then there is Percy's best friend Grover, is a Satyr, that is someone who is half horse & half man. Annabeth is the daughter of Athena who is a Greek Goddess. There are other important characters as well in the story like Percy's mom, or the other Gods. Percys personality in the beginning of the book is best described as shyness or acts like he doesn't care, but over the book he expands out of that stage and becomes more outgoing and courageous. Grover is fearless, he has to be because he is Percys protector. But when they go to the underworld he is kinda freaked out by Hades. Annabeth is not afraid of anything because she is the daughter of Athena, goddess of wisdom and war. Annabeth has trained for many years and w
Percy and his friends are in many different settings in the stories, all having their similarities and differences. The one that stands out to me is the Labyrinth. Percy spends the most time in the Labyrinth than any other setting. Also, this one is completely the opposite of the other two settings. In the text it says “We made it a hundred feet before we were hopelessly lost.” (Riordan, 94). This states how they’ve only been walking for a little bit until they were lost. This represents how confusing the labyrinth is. Then, the setting is Camp Half Blood. This is the place where Percy trains for his upcoming battles or events. In Chapter 13, page 226, Percy arrives back at camp, and he is welcomed by familiar faces. This explains how relieving
The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan is a fantasy- adventure novel that is based on Greek mythology. It's the second novel in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Percy Jackson has been having nightmares about his satry friend Grover Underwood. The first dream involving Grover running from an unknown force and hiding in wedding shop. At school a group of Laestrygoians attack Percy and his classmates in a game of dodgeball, but is saved by one of his friends Tyson and Annabeth Chase, one of his friends from camp. Annabeth takes Percy and Tyson to Camp Half Blood, the only safe place for demigods, which are kids who are children of humans and gods. All three of them take the
In conclusion, Caliban and Gollum are similar because they are created by dark sources, they have physical similarities, and because they both behave similarly. Both characters, though placed in different scenarios and different worlds, have deep physical and physiological connection. The argument that Gollum was perhaps based off of Caliban is stronger than it may seem. Many books and movies are based off of Shakespeare's works, so perhaps this is just one of the many.
Percy Jackson is a true hero. Imagine if you had the chance to save your mother, but put your own life at risk. When Percy was given this chance, he never even thought about his own life. When he saved the world, he didn't care if he put his own life in immense trouble. When he met his half brother, he stood up for him, not caring if no one liked him after. It is clear that there is no way that Percy Jackson can be thought of anything but a hero, which is what he truly
Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ focuses on Greek mythology and interprets this into a children’s story. Throughout the story, there are many references and adaptations to mythological tales, and each one is portrayed in a different way. Riordan writes this story as though Hercules, Zeus and Poseidon were still around today, and this would be the effect they would have on people in this day and age.
Percy attended school through the eighth grade in Alabama’s public schools. Going to high school was not an option for Percy, since he was a black person. But that didn’t stop Percy from going into college to pursue his dream.
Percy Jackson thinks he is just a normal kid When Mrs. Dobbs attacked him, his perceptions undid Half human, half god Poseidon's son Led by his friend, they go on the run They pick up his mom to take them for a ride To a camp where half-bloods can safely reside When they arrive, he is given a prophecy to set out on a quest Taking Annabeth and Grover, they will try their best To retrieve Zeus's master bolt which has been looted If it is not found swiftly, seeds of war will be rooted Suspecting Hades as the thief, they head to the west Before embarking to the underworld, they give the other campers their best With a strict time limit of just ten days They overcome obstacles in many different ways Athena's daughter, Annabeth is very smart Grover,
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie is about a young boy who has just discovered that he is a demi-god Percy Jackson. As he goes on his quest to save the camp, he has no faith in his father Poseidon (god of the sea and other waters; of earthquakes; and of horses). When he came to camp he was knocked out for two days due to a fight with the minotaur, but after he awoke 2 days later, he finds out that greek mythology is real. Even though he did not believe it at first or have any faith in them,
Suffice it to say that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a contemporary masterpiece of a series and is more than worth its salt in the context of classic, factual Greek mythological references. Therefore, one can examine the series through the scope of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and explore the heroic parallels between Percy Jackson and the great Greek heroes Perseus, Theseus, and Hercules through a timeless lens.
