In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis,” Hurst’s use of somber diction and regretful imagery conveys a solemn tone and reveals that there are limits to everything in life that should not be pushed too far. Hurst uses gloomy diction in the form of similies to show the struggles that the brother had to go through with Doodle. When Doodle and his brother arrived at Horsehead Landing, a storm came and the sun “disappeared,” causing them to head back while “darkness descended,” and then Doodle fell creating a “wall of rain” between them. (Hurst 462) Hurst starts out the scene with a simile that creates foreshadowing of an event that is about to happen when the sky turns dark because of the storm.
